SUMMER PROGRAM EXPERIMENT IN ARCHITECTURE IIT ARCHITECTURE CHICAGO

EXPERIMENT IN ARCHITECTURE If you are finishing your sophomore or junior year of high school, and looking to the future, you may be interested in IIT s summer architecture program: Experiment in Architecture. This two-week program is designed to introduce high school students to the architecture profession. IN 2015, THE EXPERIMENT IN ARCHITECTURE PROGRAM WILL BE OFFERED IN TWO SESSIONS: COMMUTER SESSION JULY 6 JULY 17 RESIDENTIAL SESSION JULY 19 AUGUST 1 The workshop will run from 9 a.m. 5 p.m. during the week (Monday Friday). Students will tour Chicago, complete a series of design projects, and attend lectures by IIT faculty. The program is intended to inform students about the study and practice of architecture, and will assist participants in making informed decisions about pursuing an architectural education and career. All individuals interested in pursuing a career in the design and building professions are encouraged to attend. THIS COURSE HAD EVERYTHING SKILL- BUILDING CONCEPTS AND INSTRUCTION IN ARCHITECTURAL CONCEPTS. THERE WERE FIELD TRIPS THAT SHOWED HOW EVERYTHING WE TALKED ABOUT IN THE STUDIO APPLIED TO REAL LIFE. RECENT ATTENDEE FORMAT Experiment in Architecture is held on Illinois Institute of Technology s historic Main Campus, offering unique access to the largest collection of Mies van der Rohe buildings anywhere. Teachers and students take advantage of Chicago as a dynamic laboratory of architectural speculation and discovery. Since enrollment is limited to 30 attendees, students can expect individual attention from their studio instructors.

PROJECTS, TRIPS, AND SEMINARS The program includes field trips to Chicago s architectural landmarks and architectural offices, instruction in freehand sketching with an emphasis on interpreting and visualizing the world around us, studio classes with an emphasis on design through two-dimensional (2-D) representations and three-dimensional (3-D) constructions, and a session on developing and focusing career plans. The program concludes with an exhibition of student work and a reception for students and their families. The work is rigorous and students will need to respond with enthusiasm and maturity. Each day includes a demanding schedule of projects. No prior expertise in drawing or model making is required. Participants who complete the program are awarded certificates. Experiment in Architecture program instructors keep records of performance and may write letters of recommendation as requested. The drawings and models that students produce can be used in application portfolios for college-level architecture programs.

RESERVATIONS We are pleased to offer both a commuter and residential version of the Experiment in Architecture program. The cost of the commuter program is $875. The program fee covers all studio materials, readings, and museum admission. The program will also provide CTA passes for use on our off-campus tours and office visits. Daily lunches will be provided either at our field trip sites or at IIT s Commons cafeteria. A residential version of the program is available at a cost of $1,500. The additional cost includes a 13-night stay at an Illinois Institute of Technology residence hall and meals at The Commons cafeteria. Summer program staff will supervise residential participants and organize evening and weekend activities. Financial aid is limited and available on the basis of demonstrated need. Go to arch.iit.edu/study/special for more information. APPLICATION PROCESS Please submit the following: 1. High school transcript 2. Letter of recommendation (from a teacher or counselor) 3. Short essay of 250 words (one page, double-spaced) describing why you are interested in architecture and your goals for Experiment in Architecture. Apply online at arch.iit.edu/study/special The application deadline for summer 2015 is April 1, 2015. All admission decisions will be made by May 15, 2015.

Illinois Institute of Technology College of Architecture S. R. Crown Hall 3360 S. State Street THE PROGRAM REALLY HELPED ME DECIDE WHETHER OR NOT I WANTED TO BE AN ARCHITECT. THE STUDIO PROJECTS THAT WE DID ILLUSTRATED WHAT IT S LIKE TO WORK IN A STUDIO AND HOW YOU LL HAVE TO THINK WHEN STUDYING TO BECOME AN ARCHITECT. RECENT ATTENDEE

NOWNESS is our approach. There are no more boundaries, no eternal forms. We should not attempt to define architecture in an allencompassing way but instead make possible an architecture of freedom. Now is the time for opportunities of innovation. Now is the time to conceive new strategies. We live in an era of rapid transition. More than ever before, technological developments have reshaped our perception of the world. Our world is becoming a single metropolis, with individual cities as neighborhoods. Our relationship to the environment has never been more challenged than it is today. How will architecture react to these developments? IIT Architecture welcomes students, faculty, and guests from around the globe who share our interest in Rethinking the Metropolis. We will conduct research; we will analyze existing phenomena; we will learn from other disciplines. We will question the roles of architecture, landscape, and urbanism in our new conditions: How will we deal with making, with the development of new materials, with technical innovations that challenge our assumptions about architecture? How will we develop new prototypes and typologies? How will we invent a new city with new ideas of living/working/playing/ shopping/ relaxing/ learning/communicating? How will we create a zero-energy metropolis? What will be the role of infrastructure and the connections it enables in our new map of the world? What will be the roles of manufacturing, tourism, and shopping? How will education, the university, and research become main activities for the future metropolis? All this is what we call Rethinking the Metropolis. At the dawn of a new age, IIT Architecture provides a platform for questioning architecture; for encouraging childlike curiosities to be explored; and for reshaping, rewriting, and rethinking our global metropolises.
