On that day our patron Blessed Junipero Serra was elevated to the sainthood by Pope Francis in Washington, DC. What a beautiful, historical ceremony it was! From the moment Pope Francis stepped onto the US soil his presence on the screen brought tears to my eyes. I can only imagine the emotions of those present. Pope Francis is gracious and inspirational. We can pray that his presence continues to infuse new energy to our Church and our mission for more vocations. Perhaps he will inspire a new moral standard for our country. canonization with a morning Mass at Resurrection Church followed by a gathering after the Mass. on Tuesday, October 13 th at Willow Creek; Social at 5:00 PM and Dinner at 5:30. Chaplain September 2015 General Meeting We were blessed to have two speakers at our General Meeting. Sister Iria Miller gave a beautiful biography and history of Father Junipero Serra (1713-1784). He was born in Majorca Spain and was given the name Miguel Jose. Educated by the Franciscans when he entered the Order he choose the name Junipero in memory of the companion of St Francis. Serra came to be a missionary in America, first establishing missions in Mexico and then traveling to what is now California where he founded nine of the Missions, one which is San Juan Capistrano. Though there is some controversy (regarding treatment of the native Indians) about his canonization, he was chosen for sainthood because of his missionary zeal as he proclaimed the message of the Gospel, his love of the Sacraments and his love for the people he converted. There are monuments and memorials to Serra, also known as the Apostle of California. Serra International was established in his honor. He was beatified by Pope John Paul II on September 25, 1988 and canonized in the US on September 23, 2015, by Pope Francis at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception National Cathedral in Washington, DC. Saint and is the first Saint canonized in the United States. A special guest at our September meeting was Serra District Governor, Mr. John Wagenaar, who came to induct the 2015-2016 Serran Officers and Board serving this year. He also highlighted our patron Father Junipero Serra and his then scheduled canonization on September 23 rd. Our prayers to promote vocations to the priesthood are being answered as more men are discerning the call by the Lord and entering Seminary Schools. As Serrans in serving the Lord. John thanked the Serrans for all they do in the Rochester Serra Club in promoting and praying for all vocations. PHOTOS FROM OUR MEETING John Wagenaar and Rochester Serrans
