Welcome to our international city! It is my honour to welcome you to Maastricht. Maastricht is a very international city, and that shows in a number of ways. Many Dutch visitors say that coming to Maastricht is like going abroad. We take that as a compliment. Of course we re proud of the Dutch culture, but throughout history we ve enjoyed combining different cultures. For centuries Maastricht was heavily influenced by Belgium and Germany. That international character can be heard on the streets. In addition to the sing-song Maastricht dialect (and of course Dutch), you ll hear languages from all over: English, French, German, Spanish, Italian, Arabic, Russian, Portuguese, Finnish, Chinese, Japanese, and countless others. Some of these people are tourists, but most are people who work or study in Maastricht. With our many international organizations and educational institutes like Maastricht University, Zuyd University of Applied Sciences, Maastricht School of Management, and United World College, we welcome talented people from around the world. As a result, while it s clear that Maastricht is not an international metropolis in terms of size, it certainly is in terms of its character and outlook. It s a lively, dynamic, historic city which is easy to get around in. It offers countless historical landmarks, rich and varied shopping, and renowned gastronomic experiences. Life can be thoroughly enjoyed here. Maastricht hosts major international events like The European Fine Art Fair, the André Rieu concerts, Jumping Indoor Maastricht, City Polo Maastricht, the Preuvenemint culinary festival, the Château Maestricht regional cuisine event, Magical Maastricht, and much more. Maastricht is also working towards the future. In the field of life science, for instance, the Academic Hospital Maastricht and Maastricht University work together on the Health Campus. Stately lady The Markt square is the heart of Maastricht, boasting the contemporary architecture of the municipal offices and crowned by the beautiful seventeenth-century city hall. Maastricht s living room The Vrijthof square, perhaps the Netherlands most famous square, is the backdrop for the Preuvenemint culinary festival, the André Rieu concerts, and the Theater aan het Vrijthof. This former ghetto is now one of Maastricht s most exclusive shopping streets. Across the river The district of Wyck serves as Maastricht s front door, the first district that you see when you step off the train. CITY ON THE MEUSE Maastricht thanks its existence to the Meuse River. A settlement arose around the bases of the Roman-built bridge over the Meuse. This settlement grew into the Maastricht we know today. From the water, you can see a different side of Maastricht. Discover Maastricht from the water OVER WATER Rederij Stiphout has five passenger ships sailing a regular scheduled service. The trips vary from a short trip on the Meuse to a full day trip to Liège. The trip takes you past the historic St. Servaas bridge, the new Céramique district, the Gouvernement building and St. Pietersberg Hill. Just before the Belgian border, the boat turns back towards the centre of Maastricht. Boat trip through the historic inner harbour: t Bassin This historic and fascinating boat trip takes you through no fewer than three sets of locks and a tunnel which was part of Maastricht s fortifications. HISTORY OF MAASTRICHT Maastricht not only vies with Nijmegen for the honorary title of oldest Dutch city, it is also the Netherlands second monumental city. Maastricht s history as a Roman settlement, religious centre, garrison city, and early industrial powerhouse is still visible. Old, but not obsolete

THROUGH THE YEARS Roman settlement Around the beginning of the Common Era, the Romans drove the Celts out of Maastricht and built a bridge over the Meuse. Maastricht comes from the Latin Mosae Trajectum, meaning ford over the Meuse. Religious centre 380 Bishop Servatius moves the episcopal see from Tongeren to Maastricht. In the Middle Ages, his grave is a popular pilgrimage site. 1204 Maastricht is granted medieval city rights. During the Middle Ages Maastricht comes under the joint sovereignty of the dukes of Brabant and the prince-bishops of Liège. Garrison city 1579 The Spanish army, led by Alexander Farnese, Duke of Parma, conquers Maastricht. 1632 The Stadtholder Frederik Hendrik brings Maastricht into the Seven United Netherlands. 1673 The French Sun King, Louis XIV, captures Maastricht. During the attack on the city walls, the famous musketeer d Artagnan is killed. 1678 Maastricht is restored to Dutch rule. 1794 Maastricht becomes part of the French Republic, which abolishes joint sovereignty and grants French citizenship to all residents. 1814 Maastricht again comes under Dutch rule. General Dibbets succeeds in keeping Maastricht in Dutch hands during the Belgian Revolution of 1830. Early industrial city 1830 Industrialization is started in the Netherlands when Petrus Regout, a glass and pottery manufacturer in Maastricht, purchases the first steam engine. 1976 The State University of Limburg is established in Maastricht in hopes of reinvigorating the economy of Limburg after the mines are closed. In 1996, it is renamed Maastricht University. 1991 The cooperative platform established by the Dutch, German and Belgian provinces in 1976 acquires legal status in 1991 as the Euregio Meuse-Rhine. The cooperation initially applies primarily to universities and businesses. 1992 Representatives of twelve European countries sign the Treaty of Maastricht leading to the introduction of the euro. 21

MONUMENTS There are certain sights you just have to see when you visit Maastricht. Don t miss the Helpoort, the oldest city gate in the Netherlands, which was built by Henry I of Brabant in 1229 as part of the city s fortifications. Now it houses an exhibition on Maastricht s fortifications. The city s fortifications include the pentagonal Fort St. Pieter, on the northern edge of St. Pietersberg hill, dating from 1701-1702. You should also visit the Museum aan het Vrijthof, in the 14th-century home of the Duke of Brabant. It now houses a museum, café, and shop. The City Hall on the Markt square is also part of Maastricht s heritage. It was built in 1659-1664 by the architect Pieter Post. The tower dates from 1684 and houses a carillon with 49 bells which is still played regularly. Dinghuis Another historic building is the Dinghuis, on the corner of Kleine Staat and Grote Staat. The Dutch word staat in these street names means the place where municipal authority is located. The name Dinghuis comes from the Dutch dingen, which means to administer judgement. This building was the courthouse until around 1650. These days, it houses VVV Maastricht, the Maastricht tourist board.

SUBTERRANEAN SURPRISES Much of Maastricht s cultural heritage is not visible to the eye, as there are almost as many cultural treasures below ground as above ground. The Derlon Hotel s cellar houses a museum with Roman artefacts from the second, third, and fourth centuries. Another underground museum, Schuilen in Maastricht, is located one of the galleries of the Kazematten underground bunker complex. This museum is devoted to the shelters created in Maastricht during World War II and the Cold War. Maastricht is also surrounded by the Du Moulin Line and the Kazematten, a network of tunnels and mine shafts used in defending the city during times of siege between 1575 and 1825. MAASTRICHT CAVES The tunnels made by mining for marlstone are also worth visiting. St. Pietersburg hill has the North and Zonneberg Caves; and the Jesuits Cave, with sculptures from all over the world, is at Cannerberg hill. Ancient hidden treasures 31

RELIGIOUS CULTURE Maastricht has been a tourist destination since the Middle Ages. Pilgrims flocked to the city to visit the grave of St Servatius. Over fifty churches, chapels, monasteries, and convents take part in the annual religious processions through the city, showing that religion is still a vibrant part of Maastricht s culture. The St Servatius procession is a ten-day religious event held once every seven years since 1391. It brings tens of thousands of visitors to Maastricht. The next one will take place in 2018. MAASTRICHT S TREASURES The core of the medieval transept basilica of St Servatius dates from around AD 1000 and was built above the grave of St Servatius (St. Servaas). Maastricht keeps its greatest relics in the basilica s treasury: the chest reliquary (Noodkist), the goblet, and the bust of St Servatius. The collection includes precious metals, ivory, silks, paintings, and statues. The treasury of the basilica of Onze Lieve Vrouwe is no less magnificent. It contains religious art and articles including richly embroidered liturgical garments, relics, processional banners, liturgical silver, and statues. The Gothic St. Janskerk is also part of the city s rich religious heritage. Originally a Roman Catholic parish church, it was converted into a Protestant church in 1632. It has a very special pulpit, beautiful gravestones and wall paintings, and the monumental Binvignat organ. 33

FROM CHURCH TO The people of Maastricht are highly inventive, particularly in preserving their heritage. Over the years, many churches, monasteries, and convents have been threatened with closing. They have them from destruction by receiving a new use. The fifteenth-century Kruisherenklooster (Monastery of the Crosiers) and its church is a perfect example of this. The entire complex was transformed into a luxurious design hotel with respect for its history. The thirteenth-century former Dominican church and monastery have also been repurposed.
