Students have received classroom guidance lessons about their transcripts and the importance of building their high school GPA, taking advantage of volunteer opportunities to meet Bright Futures requirements, and about registering and preparing for the ACT and SAT. Students have signed up for over 25 different clubs and our Academic Enrichment Plan (AEP) tutoring has begun. The Parent Advisory Council had their first PAC meeting and shared many ideas of how to help support the school. We anticipate high school grades to be announced some time in November. As you may know the state wide grading system was revised making it more difficult for schools to earn and keep their "A". We continuously strive for school improvement and student academic achievement no matter what level the bar is set. Sincerely, Kristine Bennett 1

From the Desk of Jeff Mitchell As the school year is off to a great start, we are excited to see the engagement and learning that is taking place in the classrooms at BDCHS. We are excited about the start of our athletics seasons with Volleyball and Bowling in full swing, while Soccer and Basketball are in various stages of conditioning. As we think about the end of the quarter and the start of next quarter, I want to remind you that our school day begins at 7:25am and ends at 2:40pm. Our Attendance Committee is monitoring those with excessive absences and tardies and we would like to be proactive to prevent any negative consequences. Looking forward to a great finish to our 1 st quarter, Jeffrey Mitchell From The Music Department Dessert & Coffee Night featuring the BDCHS Jazz Band Saturday, October 13th at 7:00 PM in the Media Center. School Wide Recycling Program A school wide recycling program has been implemented. You will see different containers placed in classrooms and in the cafeteria. Please pay attention to the containers and what should be placed in them. As a school, we will earn money for all paper recycled. Acceptable items include newspaper, office paper, books, mail, envelopes, magazines, construction paper, paper bags, and shredded paper and file folders. These items will go into the plastic totes in the classrooms. Other items that may be recycled are cardboard boxes, plastic (no grocery bags please), steel cans, aluminum cans, and drained milk cartons. These items will go into the white trash cans in the classrooms or the designated bins in the cafeteria. PLEASE DO NOT THROW FOOD OR GUM INTO THE RECYCLING BINS. THIS IS NOT TRASH. Thank you BDCHS staff and students for helping reduce waste, while earning money for the school. New Scholarship Opportunity Announcement The Right Fit Foundation announced its first annual $5,000.00 scholarship for local high school students. To qualify, students must be a US Citizen, a resident of Hillsborough County, and have a weighted GPA of 3.0 or higher. Also, all applicants must attend one of the Foundation s free college admission and financial aid classes along with their parents or guardians. Students can register to attend a class on the website: www.therightfitfoundation.org. The deadline for application is January 15 th, 2013 and the winner of the scholarship will be notified March 15 th, 2013. BDCHS Green School Project Help our school earn money and protect the environment. Please bring your old ink cartridges, cell phones, digital cameras, mp3 players and laptops to be recycled. Green school project recycles these used items and sends the school money for doing this. You can drop your items off at the designated bins that are placed inside the front lobby of the school. If you have questions about acceptable items, please contact Ms. Clay or check www.greenschoolproject.com for the list. Thank you for helping our school and protecting the environment. 3

From The Office of Student Services Empowering Students to Soar to New Heights through the Promotion Academic Excellence and Service Learning Dr. Hart Mrs. Ervin The Office of Student Services seeks to inspire academic achievement, responsible citizenship and individual development in a supportive environment that embraces 21st Century skill development and application. We support students in taking full responsibility for their social/emotional and academic potential. Our staff seeks to assist students in acquiring the knowledge and skills to become lifelong learners in this diverse global society. We believe it is essential to maintain open lines of communication with parents and community members to fulfill these goals. To empower our students, we seek to provide many opportunities for personal academic and character development. When our office is informed of opportunities in which BDCHS students may participate that foster such growth, we want to share this information as quickly and accessibly as possible. New information for students, parents and families provided by the Office of Student Services will be shared on the school website under the Office of Student Services section as well as through ParentLink messages. Information regarding scholarship opportunities, civic involvement groups, service learning activities, college visitations, the college application process, dual enrollment news, and various other activities will be updated on the website regularly. Please also feel free to call our office directly as we are here to serve the needs of the BDCHS community. We are excited to announce that we do have our College Resource Center now open for student access. College representatives from throughout the state of Florida are now connecting with our office to make contact and provide literature for individuals that may be interested in their institutions. Any print information we receive will be available in the College Resource Center for students to access. Ms. Bell Mrs. Montanez One other important note to highlight is the stimulating curriculum that is the foundation of the exceptional educational experiences provided to our outstanding student body. The students immersion in enriching learning experiences that promote the growth of 21 st Century skills would not be possible without the amazing staff and faculty of BDCHS. Their personal investment in the educational success of the students is remarkable. It is the staff and faculty s personal investment in the students success paired with the implementation of a rigorous, challenging curriculum that enhances student learning and mastery of skills and content that provide the truly enriching educational environment. For more information about our foundational curriculum that guides our curricular planning, please visit www.corestandards.org, or contact the Curriculum Specialist in the Office of Student Services directly. We look forward to working closely with you and your students. Together we empower the BDCHS students to excel in academics and be actively engaged in positively impacting our local, state, national, and global society.
