Childminders in ISLINGTON Islington Family Information Service www.islington.gov.uk/fis 020 7527 5959 November 2017

Childminders in Islington Childminders look after children in the childminder s own home. Ofsted, the Office for Standards in Education, Children s Services and Skills, registers and inspects them. Childminders are self-employed and services, fees and opening times vary. Childcare on Domestic Premises is Ofsted registered childcare based in a home where four or more carers look after children at the same time. It s a small nursery operating on domestic premises. We update the attached list at least every four weeks. All childminders and childcare on domestic premises on the vacancy list are registered with Ofsted. For more information or if you have any questions about choosing a childminder contact Renate Laux, Childminding and Childcare Information Officer, Family Information Service, on 020 7527 5927 or email renate.laux@islington.gov.uk. Good reasons for choosing a childminder: Your child will be in a home environment. Your child will have a familiar carer who provides fun and learning. Childminders go to local children s centres, parks, libraries and community centres. Childminders can support families for years as children grow up Siblings can be cared for together. You may be able to get flexible hours. Some childminders provide overnight care. How many children can childminders care for? The maximum number of children a childminder can usually look after is: up to six children under 8 years no more than three children under 5 years (only one child can be a baby under 1 year). Childminders may be able to care for more children if they employ assistants or work with another registered childminder. Factors that may affect the number of children childminders can look after include, for example, the space they have available and whether they care for their own children. The Statutory Framework for the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) sets out the maximum number and ages of children a childminder can care for. It is the responsibility of the childminder to meet these requirements at all times. When are childminders open? Most childminders work between 8am and 6pm but some work earlier or later. Childminders can provide part time, before and after school and holiday care. Some also work on weekends and some provide overnight care. The Family Directory http://www.islington.gov.uk/fis has filter options for flexible childcare and you can search for childminders offering, for example, care before 8am or after 6pm.

Childminders in Islington Childminders working with disabled children and their families Some childminders have attended additional training supporting them to work with disabled children and their families. The Early Years Inclusion Team provides further support and training. Monitoring and inspecting childminders Childminders must be registered by Ofsted before they can begin to work with children. This includes a home visit and enhanced Disclosure and Barring (DBS) checks (formerly know as CRB check) for the childminder and everyone over 16 years who lives in the home. Registered childminders are inspected regularly at least once within three years. All childminders should regularly attend training to continue their professional development and to keep up to date. Some childminders have qualifications. New childminders must have completed introductory training and must have a current paediatric first aid certificate before being registered. Islington Quality Assurance Scheme: Flexi Network All childminders in Islington are members of the Flexi Network and supported and monitored by the network coordinators. Childminders work towards 10 quality standards which cover all aspects of childminding from keeping children safe to working with families. Childminders who meet these standards are quality assured and therefore show commitment to offering the best possible childcare service. This is because they continue to develop their services and evaluate what they are providing for children through regular training and support. They also show a strong commitment to work in partnership with parents and their local children s centre. Choosing a childminder Childminders are a small, home-based childcare setting. They can be more flexible and activities vary. Before contacting a childminder think about what to discuss with the childminder, for example, the days and hours you want, school holiday care and individual needs of your child. Suggested questions to ask: How many children do you look after and what are their ages? What are your normal hours of work? What are your fees? Do the fees include meals? What activities and routines do you provide for the children? Do you access activities at the local children s centre? What training and experience do you have? How do you manage difficult behaviour? Can I see a copy of your registration and insurance certificates and your latest Ofsted report? Do you have references from parents? Do you drive? If yes, do you have suitable insurance cover and car seats?

Childminders in Islington What are your arrangements in case there is an emergency? When are you on holiday? Who else will be in the house when you are minding? Do you have pets? What are your arrangements for a settling in period? Visit several childminders to see how they get on with your child and to be able with to compare settings. Spend time discussing contract details with the childminder before signing it. The contract is a written agreement with parents and should cover hours, fees, holidays, illness, notice period and anything else you and the childminder want clearly worked out to prevent disputes. If you make an appointment to visit a childminder but decide not to go, please contact the childminder to say you are not coming. Stay and play plus speed minding Speed minding sessions offer an opportunity to meet local childminders at a children s centre. You can find out about services they offer and also talk to staff about childminders as a childcare option. Most sessions are organised at a regular stay and play. The next session is: Date of the next session to be confirmed For more information contact Renate Laux, Childminding Information Officer on 020 7527 5927 or email renate.laux@islington.gov.uk. Charges Childminders are self-employed and fees vary depending on the type of care given. As a guide, fees range from about 250 to 350 per week. For advice about paying for childcare, including free early learning, visit Islington s website. For advice about your full entitlement to all benefits, including Tax Credits, call the Islington Income Maximisation Team on 0800 731 8081. Free early learning for 2 year olds Some two year olds from low income families are eligible for a free part-time early education place. These places are available at a growing number of Islington nurseries, primary schools and childminders, the term after the child turns two. For further details and to check whether your child may be eligible visit: www.islington.gov.uk/free2.

Childminders in Islington Free early learning for 3-4 year olds 15 hours free early learning Like all councils, Islington offers 3-4 year olds a free part time early education place usually from the beginning of the term after their third birthday. These are term time only, up to 15 hours per week. You can top up with more daycare hours, but you don t have to. To find out if a particular childminder is offering this, look in the childminder s details under Nursery Education/EYEE. 30 hours free childcare From September 2017, some working parents will be eligible for an additional 15 hours of free childcare for their 3 and 4 year olds. These families will be able to access up to 30 hours free childcare a week. For further information on eligibility for this new scheme see www.islington.gov.uk/30hours Early Years Foundation Stage Nurseries, pre-schools, reception classes and childminders all must follow a legal document called the Early Years Foundation Stage Framework (EYFS). The EYFS exists to support all professionals working in early years to help your child, and was developed with a number of early years experts and parents. It sets out: The legal safeguarding and welfare requirements that everyone registered to look after children must follow to keep your child safe and promote their welfare in all areas The 7 areas of learning and development which guide professionals engagement with your child s play and activities as they learn new skills and knowledge Assessments that will tell you about your child s progress through the EYFS Expected levels that your child should reach at age 5, usually the end of the reception year; these expectations are called the Early Learning Goals (ELGs) How do I know my child will be safe? Safety measures what happens in an emergency? How does the childminder ensure that the premises are secure? What training and experience do the practitioners have? Is the first aid certificate displayed? What is the policy on sickness? What happens if your child becomes ill when with the childminder? How do they ensure that the right person collects your child? Does the childminder have a clear Child Protection Policy? It is good practice to have an enhanced Disclosure and Barring (DBS) check every 3 years Is the complaints procedure clearly displayed? Is the insurance certificate displayed?
