This booklet is intended to give you an insight into our group and to be a handy reference. AT SCHOOL LANE PRE-SCHOOL we aim to provide quality care and education to children between 2 years old and starting school. We work together with parents in order to help our children learn and develop. We are open to every family in the community regardless to race, religion, gender, ethnicity, disability and social standing and is committed to providing equality of opportunity and antidiscriminatory practice for all children and families. THE PRE-SCHOOL is situated on the outskirts of Norwich and was originally opened in It is now located within Sprowston Town Council s Diamond Centre where, in 2013, was re-located into one large, architecturally designed, open planned room, including our own separate kitchen toilets and a large outside play area. The entrance to the Pre-School is via the car park on School Lane (opposite the hairdressers). The Pre-School offers sessional care and education for children aged from 2 years old to school age, Monday to Friday 9am 12pm and 12pm 3pm during term time. 3 Our setting uses the Development Matters in the Early Years Foundation Stage guidance to plan and provide a range of play activities which help children make progress in each of the areas of learning. We assess how the children are learning and developing through observations. The information we gain, as well as photographs, are documented in the child s Learning Story. The Learning Story is shared with the child s parent(s) / carer(s) who are also encouraged to share information about what their child likes to do at home and how they as parents support their development. The 2 year Progress Check As an Early Years Foundation Stage requirement the child s Key Person will provide parents and carers with a short written summery of their child s development regarding personal social and emotional development; physical development; communication and language; when the child is between 24 and 36 months. Observations are carried out by staff alongside contributions from parents and other professionals as part of our everyday practice. A Learning Story (record of achievement) is kept on each child. This enables us to provide your child with their needs, wellbeing and progress. This is done in partnership between your child s Key Person and yourself. By collecting information about your child s needs, this will enable the Key Person to identify your child s stage of progress and identify how your child moves onto the next stage. We maintain a good adult to child ratio, ensuring we have 1: 4 two year olds and 1: 8 three and four year olds. Parents Rota. We welcome any parent helpers per session. We have a rota displayed on the Pre-School s noticeboard before the start of the following term and parents/carers are asked to select a day on which they are able to help. This gives a chance for parents to become involved and to see how a morning is run. Parents often have their own interests or skills which they can share with the setting. An extra pair of hands is always welcome. Whilst assisting at Pre-School, rota parents are required to respect the confidentiality of all children, parents and staff. Parents with children younger than Pre-School age must remain them if they bring them to a session. A morning spent at the Pre-School can be most rewarding. (Essential Policies & Procedures for the EYFS Pre-School Learning Alliance 2012) What is a Key Person? A Key Person has special responsibility for a small group of children. Parents and children know the name of their Key Person from the beginning of their involvement with the Pre-School. They will be with your child when they first start in order to help your child settle in and will then continue to support your child through their learning. A noticeboard within Pre-School displays photographs of the Key Personnel with the names of children they are underneath. A Key Person will ensure that the needs of each child are recognised within the Early Years Foundation Stage. They will do this through observation and collecting information in order to be able to provide care that is right for your child s particular needs. Special Educational Needs & Disabilities (SEN/D) The Pre-School takes into account equal opportunities, special educational needs (SEN), and follows the Code of Practice, Policy and Procedures as set by the Early Years Statutory Framework as well as Special Educational Needs and Disabilities Code of Practice (2015). Our setting recognises the wide range of special educational needs of children and works closely with their families. We have policies and procedures in place which ensure all children have the appropriate opportunities to learn through play and that all families feel welcome. We will consider all applicants for places and will do our utmost to include children of all needs, where possible and if needed will endeavour to gain extra support for specific child needs. Our Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEN/D) and Equal Opportunities Named Co-Ordinator is, her Deputy is Lisa Eastman. Ofsted The Pre-School is regulated and inspected by Ofsted, Our last inspection was July 2015 where we gained an overall Good rating with an Outstanding in The contribution of early years provision to the well-being of children. A copy of the report can be seen on the Pre-School notice board and also on our website. Safeguarding Children At School Lane Pre-School we have a duty of Law to help safeguard children against suspected or actual significant harm. All staff undertakes a Safeguarding Course and we have policies and procedures in place to support this. We have a named Safeguarding Lead Practitioner - CAROLINE LASKEY and a Deputy Safeguarding Lead Practitioner - LISA EASTMAN

4 GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT THE CHILDREN S LEARNING ENVIRONMENT By having a routine with positive encouragement, we try to create a good atmosphere within a safe a stimulating environment. Where a child feels secure and happy he/she is ready to learn. For a child, playing is learning. We are guided by The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) (DfE 2012) and our setting covers the four stages of the EYFS; A Unique Child is constantly learning and can be resilient, capable, and confident Positive Relationships children learn to be strong and independent through positive relationships Enabling Environment in which experiences respond to their individual needs and relationship between staff, parents and carers Learning and Development children learn and develop in different ways. This framework covers care and education to include all children whatever their needs. Children are able to choose what they want to play with. We aim to provide the children with interesting activities appropriate to their age, stage and development. There are two areas of Learning and Development: Prime areas Personal, Social and emotional development Physical Development Communication and language Specific areas Literacy Mathematics Understanding the world Expressive arts and design Children will attain Early Learning Goals by the end of the Early Years Foundation Stage and with the guidance of The Development Matters, we assess all our children and are then able to plan their learning and development. Waiting List We operate our waiting list on age and places are allocated as spaces become available. The Pre-School can accommodate up to 26 funded children per session. We aim to ensure all sections of our community have access to the Pre-school through open, fair and clearly communicated procedures. Settling in process Parents are welcome to stay with their child for sessions until they feel confident their child has settled and no longer needs their support. This also provides a good opportunity to meet your child s future playmates and the staff. Parental Obligations It is your responsibility to inform us when someone other than yourself is to collect your child from Pre-School, by giving a named person to the member of staff taking the register for that session. Once your child has been collected, the Pre-School is no longer them. Parents are expected to work with the staff at Pre-School to promote positive behaviour and to abide by its Policies and Procedures. We will not tolerate any form of corporal punishment on or in our premises. Any use of offensive language within the Pre-school setting is unacceptable. Clothing Protective clothing is provided when your child is doing messy play activities. Clothing your child is able to manage themselves helps support your child s independence, for example going to the toilet and putting on and taking off their outdoor clothes. Best clothes are not appropriate for Pre-School as play is messy!

The Committee manages the setting and is finances, Open University employing and managing the staff, that the policies are current and worked to Level 4 Certificate in order to provide a high quality of service and ensures that the Pre-School in Early Years (working towards Level 5) works in partnerships with the children s parents.
