2 ABOUT THIS INSPECTION The purpose of this inspection is to assure government, parents and the public of the quality of childcare and, if applicable, of nursery education. The inspection was carried out under Part XA Children Act 1989 as introduced by the Care Standards Act 2000 and, where nursery education is provided, under Schedule 26 of the School Standards and Framework Act This report details the main strengths and any areas for improvement identified during the inspection. The judgements included in the report are made in relation to the outcomes for children set out in the Children Act 2004; the National Standards for under 8s day care and childminding; and, where nursery education is provided, the Curriculum guidance for the foundation stage. The report includes information on any complaints about the childcare provision which Ofsted has received since the last inspection or registration or 1 April 2004 whichever is the later. The registered person meets the National Standards for under 8s day care and childminding. WHAT SORT OF SETTING IS IT? The childminder has been registered for approximately 19 years. She is currently registered to care for four children, three of whom may be under the age of five years. At present she minds for three siblings in one family, she does not intend to change this arrangement. She lives with her husband and two adult sons in a mid terraced property in the Greystones area in the city of Sheffield. The house is situated close to all local amenities and is well served by local buses.

3 The ground floor dining room, kitchen and toilet areas are used for childminding purposes plus the fully secured outdoor area to the rear of the premises. One son and the minders husband are smokers, but do not smoke inside the house. the family own two cats who are housed and fed appropriately. The childminder works part time in an Ofsted registered crèche, she is working towards her NVQ level three in child care and is also a member of NCMA. THE EFFECTIVENESS OF THE PROVISION Helping children to be healthy Children's physical wellbeing is very well promoted. The childminder has a good awareness of healthy eating and works in partnership with parents to provide children with a suitable nutritious diet, this is to include organic foods and fruit snacks. Good recording systems are in place to inform parents of their child's food intake on a daily basis. She promotes good hygiene practice and children are encouraged to wash hands to help prevent the spread of infection. Well established routines are in place for the sterilization of feeding equipment used by the baby, and nappy changing routines are carried out hygienically. The childminder has recently completed a first aid course and is keen to update this training as required. Protecting children from harm or neglect and helping them stay safe The home is a safe and comfortable environment where children can move, eat and play safely. Space is well used to its full potential and children can freely access all resources, all of which are kept in good, clean order, in good state of repair, and are age related to the children. Furniture and equipment is suitable for their use. Risk assessments are ongoing and good policies and procedures are in place to keep children safe. The minder has recently updated first aid and child protection training. The childminder has an emergency evacuation plan in place detailing a safe evacuation route. Helping children achieve well and enjoy what they do

4 Children are allowed to relax after a busy time at crèche and school, they choose freely from suitable activities offered and respond warmly to the childminders interaction. She constantly talks to the children, explaining different reasons as to why things happen, consequences and outcomes to confirm their understanding. She allows time to respond appropriately to the needs of the baby. The baby is learning to make sounds and noises to communicate her needs, she recognises her brother and reacts to his sensitive approach, she laughs and reaches out to touch him and accepts toys offered by him. The older child speaks confidently to the childminder as they discuss the babies likes and dislikes and share experiences of Crèche and school. Helping children make a positive contribution Sensitivity towards each other is well encouraged by the childminder, she demonstrates a good understanding of the need to promote this in her efforts to foster the older child s interest in the babies needs, and enable him to recognise what the similarities and differences may be. The baby shows obvious pleasure, laughing, snuggling and making noises and is developing a real sense of belonging. Relationships with children and parents are very well established, expectations of good behaviour are met and all work in close partnership, and harmoniously together for the best interest of the children, which as a result impacts on the children being settled and happy in the childminders care. Organisation The organisation is good. The Childminder is well organised, she recognises when children need to be busy or relaxed and ensures they are happy. Days are organised enough for the children's needs to be met well. She adopts policies and procedures used at the Creche for use in her childminding and although these are not all written, she demonstrates a very good understanding of how they should be implemented. Good documentation is in place and the childminder is currently developing a system for recording the babies developmental milestones. The childminder is currently in the process of completing and NVQ level 3. Overall the provision meets the needs of all children who attend.
