1 Introduction This document explains how to use Veeam Backup & Replication to perform scheduled backups of a CentOS CTERA Portal VM (including the CTERA Portal master database node and catalog node) and to quickly and safely restore the VM from an existing backup. The procedures documented in this paper were conducted in the following environment: VMware vsphere 5.1 environment CTERA Portal Image 4.0.54 deployed as a CentOS VM Veeam Backup & Replication v7.0 R2 (build 7.0.0.839) The pre-requisites for backing up a CTERA VM using Veeam are: The CTERA Portal VM must be deployed on a VMware vsphere ESXi host or cluster that is managed by a vcenter Server. A working Veeam Backup & Replication installation must be in place, with the appropriate access rights to the vcenter Server. Tip Due to the robustness of CTERA s database engine, which is "crash consistent", a "hot snapshot" can be taken at any time. The VM will be restarted in a consistent state if recovered from the resulting backup. CTERA Portal Datacenter Edition Backing Up the CTERA Portal Using Veeam Backup & Replication 3

3 Restoring the CTERA VM from a Backup Since we choose to perform an "Instant Recovery", the restored VM runs directly from its backup files, which are presented to the vcenter via the Veeam repository, by means of a temporary NFS datastore. Therefore, it is important to migrate the VM to its original datastore (the designated production datastore) as soon as possible. The final message in this screen indicates that one should now migrate the VM. 16 Click Finish. 17 In the Veeam Backup Center's left pane, click on Instant Recovery. The Instant Recovery tab appears. 20 CTERA Portal Datacenter Edition Backing Up the CTERA Portal Using Veeam Backup & Replication
