2 Overview This guidebook provides information on the following operations on Hyper-V Server 2012 R2 Host using ActiveImage Protector for Hyper-V Enterprise. Installation Remote Connection to Hyper-V Server Backup for Hyper-V Hosts Individual Restoration of Virtual Machine This guidebook is intended to provide information only. 4 In this instance, we assume [Standard] has been chosen for Setup Type. 2. Restart the system once installation has been completed. Installation on Hyper-V Server is complete. 3

5 1.2. Management Console (ActiveImage Console) Installation ActiveImage Protector Console does not run on Hyper-V Server. In order to manage ActiveImage Protector on Hyper-V Server, Management Console (ActiveImage Console) set up on another host computer needs to be used. In this instance, ActiveImage Console is set up on a Windows 8.1 (64-bit edition) machine from the installer in Desktop Edition. How to Install 1. Installer as described below appears. Follow the instructions on wizard to proceed with installation. 4

6 In order to connect to ActiveImage Agent on a remote host using ActiveImage Console, select [Custom] and install [Network Console] feature. 5

7 In this instance, we unselect ActiveImage Agent and select Remote Console, and proceed with installation. 2. Firewall settings required for Management Console (ActiveImage Console) and remote connection are configured. 6

8 2. Making Backups using ActiveImage Protector 2.1. Remote Connection of Hyper-V Server to ActiveImage Agent Remote connection from ActiveImage Console for management in order to operate on ActiveImage Agent on Hyper-V Server. Procedures 1. Launch ActiveImage Console. 2. Click on [Connection list] Tab located at bottom-left of the console. 3. Connection list appears in the left pane. At this moment, nothing is shown in the list. 7

9 4. Right-click on the connection list, and a context menu appears. 8

10 5. Click on [Create a Computer], and [New Computer] is created as shown below. Enter the IP address of computer being connected to. 6. Right-click on the computer just created, and click on [Connect] from context menu. 7. Dialog box shown below appears. Enter user name and password required for connection. 8. List view changes as show below when connection is successfully made. When computer view is expanded, information on connected computer can be checked. Now ActiveImage Agent on Hyper-V Server can be operated through ActiveImage Console. 9

12 2.2. Creating Backup Image File Create backup image file for Hyper-V Server through ActiveImage Console. Procedures 1. Click on [Control Panel] Tab located at bottom-left of the console. 2. From [Wizards], click on [Create Backup]. 3. [Create Backup Wizard] appears. Select the entire volume or disk which includes Hyper-V Virtual Machine (required components 11

13 such as setting files and virtual disk) as backup target. Supposing Hyper-V's default file target has not been changed, [C:\] has been chosen as backup target. 4. Enter image file name and select save location. When saving the file in a shared folder, dialog shown below appears. Enter user name and password required for connection, and press [Test]. When connection has been confirmed, next step follows. 12

14 5. Select image options. Since the backup target is Hyper-V Server in this instance, a lot of duplicate data can be expected. By using [Deduplication Compression], image file size can be reduced. 6. Select backup type. 13

15 Select [Backup Now] to start backup procedures immediately. Select [Schedule Backup] to create schedules for conducting backups regularly. As for scheduling, choose one from the following three options. One Time: Execute backup at one specified time only. 14

16 Weekly Backup: Execute backup at specific time(s) on day(s) of the week. Monthly Backup: Execute backup at specific time(s) on day(s) of the month. 15

17 7. Summary is shown for confirmation. Check the settings, and press [Finish] if there is nothing to change. When [Backup Now] is selected, backup procedures start immediately. When [Schedule Backup] is selected, backup procedures start at the time specified. 16

Restore Virtual Machines Individually from Backup Image File(s) Virtual machines can be individually restored from backup image file(s) Restoration needs to be run from Hyper-V Server's local computer. In order to restore a virtual machine which was in operation when backup were being created, restoration needs to be run after "ActiveImage Protector 3.5 SP4 Update Patch" is applied Restore Virtual Machine in Executable State (Seamless Hot Restore) Virtual machines can be restored in executable state from backup image file(s) Through this procedure, only one virtual machine can be restored. Procedures 1. Run [AipReZoom.exe] from installation folder on Command Prompt. 17

19 2. [ActiveImage ReZoom Wizard] appears. Select [Seamless ReZoom Restore (Instant start)], and proceed to the next step. 3. Select an image file. 18

20 When an image file is selected, its information is shown in [Image file details]. 4. Select a virtual machine to restore. Post-restoration notification and its target folder can be specified here. In this instance, we will proceed with default settings. 19

21 5. Summary is shown for confirmation. Check the contents, and press [Finish] if there is nothing to change. 6. [ActiveImage ReZoom] appears. 7. When the excutable virtual machine (Seamless Virtual Machine) is ready, a dialog box shown below appears. 20

22 Following information can be confirmed if Hyper-V Server is connected at this point from Hyper-V Manager on another machine. Open settings on this virtual machine, and confirm the check items in above dialog box. If configuration error is detected on [Configured network adapter.] or the size is beyond what can be processed at the target computer, the seamless execution fails. Check all items after settings have been confirmed, and seamless execution becomes possible. 8. When [OK] is pressed, dialog box shown below appears. Even if seamless execution is not done at this point, execution can be done anytime from Hyper-V Manager. 9. When seamless execution is done, Hyper-V Manager's status turns as shown below. Choose [Connect...] in order to connect to Seamless Virtual Machine. 21

23 10. Restoration procedures continue to run at background even after seamless execution has been conducted. By default, I/O settings prioritize performance on Seamless Virual Machine. I/O allotment can be adjusted in [ReZoom I/O Throttle] according to processing status. Move slider to left: to prioritize I/O to Seamless Virtual Machine. This setting is suitable when experiencing slow start up or low performance. Move slider to right: to finish restoration process quickly after seamless execution. 11. Transition procedures begin after restoration procedures are complete. Since notification option to notify when restoration is complete was on in this instance, the dialog box show below appears. By pressing [OK], transition process starts. When transition process is complete, machine is automatically restarted with restored virtual machine. Until [OK] is pressed, Seamless Virtual Machine can be continually used. Usually there is access disruption of about a few dozens of seconds to one minute at transition. 22

24 It is therefore recommended that this procedure be conducted when a maintenance down time is set and with low access from outside. 12. When transition process is complete, machine is automatically restarted with restored virtual machine. In restored virtual machine, a snapshot called [ReZoom SnapShot] is created. By applying this, virtual machine can be launched from the state before seamless launch was executed. 23

25 3.2. Restoration of Virtual Machine Virtual machines can be restored from backup image file(s) In this procedure, the machine can not be started from virtual machine being restored. However, multiple virtual machines can be simultaneously restored. Procedures 1. Run [AipReZoom.exe] from installation folder on Command Prompt. 2. [ActiveImage ReZoom Wizard] appears. Select [Multiple ReZoom Restore], and proceed to the next step. 24

26 3. Select an image file. When an image file is selected, its information is shown in [Image file details]. 25

27 4. Select a virtual machine to restore. Post-restoration launch and its target folder can be specified here. In this instance, we will proceed with default settings. 5. Summary is shown for confirmation. Check the contents, and press [Finish] if there is nothing to change. When [Finish] is pressed, dialog box shown below appears. 26

28 It is recommended that [Yes] be pressed here, and start the procedures. 6. [ActiveImage ReZoom] appears. I/O allotment for restoration can be adjusted by [ReZoom I/O Throttle] procedures. Move slider to left to prioritize I/O allotment to host while processing. 7. Check the status from Hyper-V Manager when the procedure is complete. Restored virtual machine is automatically registered, and is now executable. 27
