3 Introduction This addendum provides detailed guidance on performing Lab 3, Working with Virtual Machines of the VMware vsphere 5.5 Install, Configure, Manage course, using a NETLAB+ system. Objective: Create and prepare virtual machines In this lab, you will be using the vclient machine to complete your objectives. You will be performing the following tasks: 1. 5 1 Create a Virtual Machine In this task, you use the VMware vsphere Web Client on the vclient machine to display information about the shared storage in your lab environment. The shared storage type used will be iscsi storage. 1. Click on the vclient graphic on the topology page. 2. Log into the vclient VM with the username sysadmin and password vmware Open the Chrome web browser to If you get a message that the security certificate is untrusted, click Proceed anyway. 4. Login with the username admin and the password vmware. 5. Click on the Home tab in the main workspace area. 6. Click on the VMs and Templates icon in the content area under the Inventories heading. 7. Click on the Related Objects tab in the center pane. 8. Click on the Create a new Virtual Machine icon. The New Virtual Machine wizard will launch. a. Select Create a new virtual machine. Click Next to continue. b. On the Select a Name and Folder page, set the name to TestVM. c. Select the Training datacenter and click Next. d. On the Select a compute resource page, expand the view and select the esxi-2.vmeduc.com host. Click Next to continue. e. On the Select storage page, select master datastore. Click Next. f. On the Select compatibility page, leave the default ESXi 5.5 and later selected. Click Next. g. On the Select a Guest OS page, select Windows version Microsoft Windows Server 2003 (32-bit). Click Next. 9. Make the following changes on the Customize hardware page: a. In the CPU drop-down box, leave the defaults. b. In the Memory drop-down box, select 512 MB. c. In the New Hard disk drop-down box, enter 512 MB. d. Leave all other options at their defaults and click Next. e. Review the virtual machine parameters and click Finish. 10. Click on the Training datacenter in the Object Navigator pane. 6/2/ Page 5 of 7

6 11. The Top Level Objects page, under the Related Objects tab, should show your hosts, datastores, virtual machines and network objects in your Training datacenter inventory. 6/2/ Page 6 of 7

7 2 Identify a Virtual Machine s Disk Format and Usage Statistics In this task, you will identify the virtual machine disk (VMDK) type. 1. On the Top Level Objects page of the Training datacenter, right-click the StudentVM-01 virtual machine in the inventory and select Edit Settings. 2. In the Hardware list, click on Hard disk Under Type, make note that the VDMK type is listed as Thin provision. 4. Click Cancel to close the virtual machine s Edit Settings window. 5. Click the StudentVM-01 virtual machine link and click the Summary tab. 6. On the Summary tab, you will find hardware information, resource usage, and various additional information pertaining to the StudentVM-01 virtual machine. 7. Make note that the virtual machine is currently powered off and is utilizing 0.00 HZ of CPU, 0.00 B of Memory and 1.33 GB of Storage. 8. Right-click the StudentVM-01 in the Object Navigator pane on the left side of the screen and select Power On. If you are presented with a yellow box stating that a question needs to be answered in order to proceed, select I copied it and continue. 9. Record the resource usage (please note: it may take a few minutes for the information to update): a. Memory Usage: b. Storage Usage: 10. Notice the differences between the numbers in Steps 7 and Right-click the StudentVM-01 in the inventory pane and click Shut Down Guest OS. 12.
