4 Disk Image Backup for Physical Servers Overview For physical servers, Vembu BDR TM v3.0 supports high speed disk image backups enhanced with application consistency and log truncation. In particular, Vembu BDR TM implements changed disk block tracking in real-time for efficient incremental backups. Consequently, Vembu BDR TM minimizes backup windows, decreases network traffic, and reduces the disk space required to store backup data. More importantly, Vembu BDR TM provides a complete easy-to-use backup and Disaster Recovery (DR) solution for protecting files, folders, and application data items, including user mail folders and database tables, across physical and virtual environments. For Small and Mid-sized Business (SMB) sites with a limited staff, Vembu BDR TM v3.0 is a flexible easy-touse data protection solution designed to protect an entire IT infrastructure built on physical, virtual, or hybrid IT resources. Federated Deployment Architecture Using advanced, patented, storage software, Vembu BDR TM implements distributed backup and DR operations in a centrally managed data protection environment, which provides scalable data protection for any size infrastructure, from remote office machines to a full enterprise environment. 5 Disk Image Backup for Physical Servers Federated Deployment Architecture Continued Vembu BDR TM Client/Proxy is installed on the source system to process backup data. A Vembu proxy retrieves system files, user files, and granular application data. For end-to-end data security, military-grade encryption is applied on the fly as a Vembu proxy transfers data to a Vembu Backup server. Vembu Backup Server receives backup data from a Vembu proxy and applies high level data de-duplication and compression. More importantly, the Vembu server strips out structural metadata associated the client s file system and adds content metadata, before it applies AES 256 bit encryption and stores backup images in a highly scalable document-oriented database. VembuHIVE TM is Vembu s patented document-oriented backup data repository. Having replaced all structural file system metadata with content metadata and intelligently indexed each document, Vembu is able to virtualize VembuHIVETM as a file system, with respect to backup documents. In particular, a Vembu backup server is able to apply formatting utilities to VembuHIVE documents and present persistent disk images associated with backups in multiple formats, such as.vhd,.vhdx,.vmdk, and.img, with read/write access using a virtual drive created on the Vembu backup server. Consequently, a Vembu backup server installed on a Windows server running Hyper-V, is able to instantly boot a backed up server from any environment as a Hyper-V VM. Explorer for Granular Recovery is an intuitive wizard based utility for performing granular recovery of application data, such as Exchange, SQL server and SharePoint. Wizards enable IT administrators to browse or search s, contacts, tables, and documents directly from compressed and de-duplicated data contained in VembuHIVE repositories. Tracking Changed Blocks on Server Volumes On a physical server a Vembu backup proxy installs a patented filter driver between the file system and server disk volumes. With, the Vembu backup proxy tightly integrated with the Microsoft Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS) to queue application I/O and the filter driver enabling incremental backups based on delta disk block changes between incremental backups, Vembu BDR TM is able to rapidly backup servers with exceptional efficiency. 6 Disk Image Backup for Physical Servers Simplified Operations To reduce the cost of data protection operations, Vembu BDR TM v3.0 provides a simplified wizard-based UI, which can be accessed from anywhere. The centralized Vembu BDR TM management portal enables IT administrators to easily configure backup and intelligent granular data recovery operations. In particular the UI includes dedicated explorers to recover the applications like Exchange, SQL Server, and SharePoint directly from storage locations with few clicks. For SMB sites, the Vembu UI provides a single pane of glass view of all backup and restore operations to reduce the workload of IT administrators. What s more, while Vembu BDR TM is an on premise backup software package, Vembu provides an option to replicate backup data to the Vembu cloud, hosted on Amazon Web Services. VembuHIVE TM Recovery Verification Vembu BDR TM v3.0 introduces auto integrity checks for verification of backup consistency. notifications can be sent to specified recipients reporting the state of backups to ensure that server backups are in a bootable state all the time.
