SPANISH 3HY UCSB Accelerated Spanish II Spring Quarter 2015 Instructor s information will be available on the GauchoSpace site for the course Course Description Note: Please read this carefully. It is the student responsibility to understand its content. If you require additional clarification on any aspect of the course, please see your instructor during office hours or make an individual appointment. Span 2HY & 3HY represent an accelerated equivalent of the three quarter sequence of Elementary Spanish (Span 1, 2, 3) delivered in a hybrid course format. Its hybrid format combines class instruction with a significant component of technologically based materials: the online platform WileyPlus to accompany the Pura vida textbook and a GauchoSpace site. The course materials and exercises focus on consolidating the same array of skills promoted in the regular Elementary Spanish courses (Span 1, 2, 3 meeting 4 days face- to- face). This course is particularly appropriate for students (1) that have had previous high school Spanish instruction (ideally a minimum of 2.5 years); (2) with a preference for learning mediated through technology (this is a hybrid course, so this indicates that you will be working most of the time with technology); and (3) who are responsible and independent and who do not need an instructor to remind them to do their work (e.g., daily assignments, readings, etc). Classroom contact time will be used to work with Pura vida (textbook) and will be devoted almost solely to activities that will allow you to practice your skills of understanding and interacting in Spanish. Spanish will be spoken in class 99% of the time. Classroom time will generally not be spent doing grammar drills, translating, or listening to lengthy explanations of grammar. These activities will be done online through the WileyPlus site. If you feel that you need additional help with grammar, see your instructor during office hours. You may also wish to consider meeting with a CLAS tutor on a weekly basis. This is a free tutorial service available to all students on a drop- in basis. In between class meetings, students will use the WileyPlus platform and online tasks to perform additional exercises and activities. Required Materials 1. Pura Vida! Beginning Spanish (textbook + WileyPlus access code) This textbook program will be used in Span 1, 2, 3/2HY, 3HY & 4, so you will only have to purchase it once. You can buy the loose- leaf textbook + WileyPlus access code bundled together at the UCSB bookstore, or purchase WileyPlus access with ebook access included at WileyPlus.com when you register for the course. 2. EN VIVO Live Learning Registration Card (6 Sessions). BUY IT HERE: http://www.wiley.com/wileycda/wileytitle/productcd-eoarc00718.html Course Goals and Learning Outcomes The primary goal of the Elementary Spanish language course sequence is to develop basic proficiency in Spanish at the Novice- High to Intermediate- low level (as established by the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages Proficiency Guidelines, 2012). Students are expected to learn to use Spanish for communication in real, meaningful situations. It is also intended that students develop an understanding of basic grammatical concepts and an appreciation of the various cultures of the Spanish- speaking world. By the end of Span 3HY you will be able to: Understand Spanish speech about familiar topics and spoken at a lower than normal pace. Write and speak in simple complete sentences about the present tense and immediate future successfully. Read simple short texts with simple and high frequency vocabulary. Narrate and use verbs in the present tense and immediate future. Identify forms and contexts of use for different past tenses and use to some extent different past tenses. Make cross- cultural comparisons between the U.S. and Spanish- speaking countries regarding topics such as restaurants, food culture and eating habits, games, sports, entertainment, geography, weather, nature and the environment. Communicate about those same topics using relevant vocabulary.

Spanish 3HY Page 2 Student Responsibilities Attendance: Due to the nature of language learning in general, class attendance is mandatory since it is absolutely critical for developing communicative abilities in Spanish. At the same time, it is understood that circumstances and events such as illnesses, weddings, funerals, job interviews, family emergencies, etc. may prevent your attendance. Therefore, you will be allowed a total of two absences during the quarter. These are not free days, so plan accordingly. Starting with the third absence, regardless of the reasons for the first two, ONE percentage point will be subtracted from the final calculated course grade for each additional absence. Late arrivals and early departures may also count as absences. BE PROMPT! If health or personal issues will prevent your regular attendance, you should not take this class since your final grade will be severely affected. Active participation: The student performance portion of the final grade is based on attendance, effort (quizzes, daily participation in class) and quality of response in class. Your in- class participation involves a number of variables, including, but not limited to, the following: Your use of Spanish in the classroom Your participation in all class activities Your cooperation during group/pair- work Your respect and attitude toward the instructor and your peers Since active participation is required, ABSOLUTELY NO TEXT MESSAGING OR WEB BROWSING is permitted during class. Doing so will severely affect your participation grade. Online assignments through WileyPlus: Students are expected to complete daily online assignments through WileyPlus. Go to www.wileyplus.com and look for your institution and course in which you want to enroll. You will have to create an account and enter the registration code for the Pura Vida! textbook if you already have one, or buy one along the way when creating an account. You should always read the grammatical explanations before doing the corresponding online activities. You are ultimately responsible for the material covered in class, regardless of whether you are absent or present. Absences do not relieve you from your responsibilities; you are still expected to have completed all the preparation for the class missed and the class that follows. Students are expected to have regular access to the Internet either at home or on campus, no exceptions. Any student without regular access to the Internet and a computer as well as a backup in case there are access problems with the main source should reconsider his/her enrollment in Span 2HY & 3HY. Keep in mind that you are responsible for accessing and completing materials on time; unexpected computer crashes will not be considered a valid excuse for incompletion or tardiness. Students should immediately become familiar with the GauchoSpace and WileyPlus sites for this class. On GauchoSpace you will find the syllabus, additional homework assignments, links to upload your compositions, etc. You should log in to GauchoSpace daily as important announcements and other information are updated continuously. Compositions: There will be three short writing assignments. Accent marks and special Spanish characters must be typed too and you are required to use the Spanish spell checker. The first and final drafts cannot be exactly alike. If no rewriting is done by the student, no credit will be given for the final draft. Assignments that do not meet these requirements will not be graded. You are welcome to use the Campus Learning Assistance Services (CLAS) for feedback on your writing assignments. If you use this tutorial service, request the yellow confirmation card from your tutor and attach it to your assignment when you turn it in. No assignments will be accepted late. Weekly forums: Each week, there will be a discussion forum on GauchoSpace pertaining to a cultural topic from the textbook. You will be required to submit a minimum of two (2) short posts per week to these forums. See GauchoSpace or speak with your instructor for additional information. Expected time required (approximate): Keep in mind that this is a 5- unit course. A general guideline for the amount of time you should plan to dedicate to this course is 2-3 hours of homework per unit/hour, so plan on working for at least 10 additional hours each week outside of class. Set aside time to study Spanish on a regular, preferably daily, basis. Don't cram; work at your assignment each day. Cramming doesn't work with language learning.

EN VIVO online coaching sessions: As part of the course, students are expected to attend 5 online coaching sessions. You will sign up for one weekly, 45- minute small group coaching sessions with a trained language instructor. You will practice speaking in a non- threatening environment via advanced technology. Grades are based on attendance and degree of participation, not accuracy. Buy your registration card here: http://www.wiley.com/wileycda/wileytitle/productcd-eoarc00718.html Cheating and Plagiarism: All instructors in the Spanish and Portuguese language program will follow University policy concerning cheating and plagiarism, including when evaluating compositions. The following practices, among others, are considered instances of plagiarism: copying and pasting from outside references or electronic sources paraphrasing or translating without acknowledging the source using online translators in any capacity (e.g. not even as dictionaries) getting revising/rewriting help from more advanced speakers other than the tutors at CLAS or your instructor All instructors in the Spanish and Portuguese department are professionals trained in language teaching and linguistic competence. They can EASILY recognize work that is not your own. Know what plagiarism is: ignorance will not excuse the offense. If you have any questions about plagiarism, please ask your instructor and consult the Academic Conduct guidelines by Judicial Affairs: http://judicialaffairs.sa.ucsb.edu/academicintegrity.aspx. You are allowed to use an online dictionary (not online translators) such as wordreference.com. The only acceptable revision help is with the Campus Learning Assistance Services (CLAS). Please take a moment to see when composition drafts are due so that you can schedule to meet with a CLAS tutor for revising help.

Spanish 3HY Page 4 Assessment and Evaluation Policies Testing and grading: In this course students will take two midterms and a final exam. All exam dates are included in the syllabus. Chapter exams include a listening section and a culture section. The final exam will be cumulative and will include a final composition. Grading policy: It is important to remember that no grade is given. Instead the student earns points, which will be objectively calculated on a 100- point scale. There is no extra credit. Exams: 2 @ 15% each 30% All homework and WileyPlus: 11% Writing assignments (redacciones, 3): 9% Active in- class participation: 5% EN VIVO online conversations (5x2): 10% Weekly discussion forums (10x1): 10% Final exam (comprehensive): 25% The following are the cut off points for each grade: 98% = A+ 78% = C+ 93% = A 73% = C 90% = A- 70% = C- 88% = B+ 68% = D+ 83% = B 63% = D 80% = B- 60% = D- 59% and below = F A grade of C or better is required to pass to the following Spanish course level or to pass the class if the student chooses the Pass/No Pass option. No student with a final percentage lower than 73 will be assigned a grade of Pass if the student has chosen that option. Make- up Policy: There are NO makeup exams except under extraordinary circumstances. Work schedules or travel plans do not constitute exceptions. Native Spanish Speakers This Elementary Spanish class is far below the level of a native Spanish speaker. If you do not wish to learn another language and choose to be in this class in order to meet a college requirement or to improve your GPA, keep in mind that your instructor will only give you credit for what you accomplish in this course and not for what you already know. Questions? Talk PROGRAMA to your instructor DEL CURSO during SPAN office 2 hours, or visit our website: http://www.spanport.ucsb.edu/undergrad/lower-division/courses
