Organic Samples River Sediments River Sediments Mid Level River Sediment g Collected from a monitoring station lagoon on the River Elbe close to the Czech-German border. LGC g Value for PAHs, PCBs and Organic Compound have not been certified and are subject to change as more data becomes available. EC NY/NJ Waterway Sediment g The SRM is a mixture of marine sediment collected near urban area in New York and New Jersey. SRM 9 is intended for use in evaluating analytical methods for determination of selected PAHs, PCBs, chlorinated pesticides and trace elements in marine sediment and similar matrices. Reference values are also provided for selected dibenzo-dionxins and dibenzofurans congeners, total organic carbon, total extractable material and particle-size characteristics. All of the constituents for which certified, reference and information values are provided were naturally present in the sediment material before processing. SRM 9 Sediments River Sediments PCBs and Pesticides g The SRM is an air dried river sediment. It is intended primarily for use in validation analytical methods used in determining selected PCB congeners and chlorinated pesticides in sediments. All the constituents for which certified and reference values are provided are naturally present in the sediment materials. The certified values for PCB congeners and the chlorinated pesticides are based on the agreement of the results from two or more independent analytical techniques. The refernce values are not certified values that do not meet NIST criteria for certification and are provided with associated uncertainties that may reflect a lack of sufficient statistical agreement among multiple methods. The concentrations of constituent in SRM 99A are reported on a dry mass basis. The SRM, as received, contains approximately.% moisture. A separate subsample of the SRM should be removed from the bottle at the time of analysis and dried to determine the concentration based on dry mass. SRM 99A was analyzed for selected PCB congeners and chlorinated pesticides using gas chromatography with electron-capture detector (GC-ECD)on two columns with different selectivity and using GC/MS. Sediments Lake Sediments Lake Sediment IAEA SL Lake Sediment IAEA SL Lake Sediment g g g This sample was collected in 9 from Lake Ramsey in Sudbury, Ontario. This area is well-known for its mining industry. This is reflected in the elevated cobalt, copper and nickel levels in this reference sediment. In addition, SUD- has the lowest mercury levels among our sediments for trace metals. SUD- Lake Sediment Inorganic Samples g This sample was developed from 9 to 9 as the first certified lake sediment reference material for the analysis of arsenic, selenium and mercury. The concentration levels of the three elements were certified by a multi-laboratory and multi-methodology approach. Three independent methodologies, namely atomicabsorption spectrometry, neutron-activation analysis and inductively coupled argon plasma produced data with better than 9% agreement between method means. Certification of this reference sediment for more than fifteen additional metals is nearly complete. WQB- Lake Sediment g This sample was prepared in 9, from a blend of sediments from the heavy industrial regions of Hamilton Harbor and Lake Ontario. The sediment is certified for eight trace metals, including arsenic, selenium and mercury. The Certificate of Analysis for WQB- also lists an additional twenty trace metals that are not yet certified. Organic Samples Lake Sediments Dioxin and Furan Congeners Lake Sediments Dioxin and Furan Congeners Sediments These samples are the world s first lake sediments certified for the,,,-substituted congeners of chlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans. The certified values for each sediment were generated by statistically pooling the results from more than one hundred high-resolution GC/MS analyses from eleven qualified Canadian environmental laboratories, using their own in-house methodologies and calibration standards. The certified congeners are at the pg/g level and are readily analyzed by high resolution GC/MS. In addition, these sediments have been used in several intercomparison studies of the National Dioxin Interlaboratory Program from 9 through 99. The agreement of the homologue total study results with the HRGC/HRMS data demonstrates the suitability of DX- and DX- for both high and low resolution dioxin analyses. Certification of our newest reference sediment, DX-, is currently in progress. This material has lower dioxin and furan concentrations than DX- and DX-, but also has reference values for the WHO PCB congeners i.e. the toxic polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) congeners which have been assigned Toxic Equivalency Factors (TEFs) by the World Health Organization (WHO). Reference values were generated using robust statistics on data gathered in an international intercomparison study. This novel reference sediment is suitable for method development, blind audits and other quality control purposes, particularly where risk assessment studies based on the TEF concept are being conducted. Thus the analysis of any one subsamples should yield results within the certified range, 9% of the time. For DX-, the reference values and the uncertainties are based on the robust statistical means and 9% prediction intervals. Thus there is a 9% probability that the analysis of any one sub-sample will yield results with the stated prediction intervals. a These values are information values only and are subject to changes as more data become available. b The distribution implies less than 9% confidence. Any negative deviation is inadmissible. * Values in parentheses are not certified and are given for information only.

Sediments Lake Sediments PAHs/PCBs Lake Sediment g This sample is a blend of Hamilton Habor and Lake Ontario sediments. Bottled in 99, it became the first lake sediment reference material certified for the determination of chlorobenzenes and hexachlorobutadiene. The assigned values were generated by GC-ECD and -MSD analyses and further confirmed in several interlaboratory studies. This CRM also contains significant levels of PAHs and PCBs. EC- Lake Sediment g This sample was obtained in 9 from the plume of the Niagra River in Lake Ontario. The source of this material is reflected in its higher levels of industrial contaminates such as chlorobenzenes and the relatively lower levels of combustion pollutants, such as PAHs. EC- Lake Sediment Organic Samples g This is the same sample as EC-. This sample has been proven to be a very popular quality control material for chlorobenzene monitoring program, both in the Great Lakes and elsewhere. EC- Lake Sediment g This is our newest reference sediment under development. This material was collected in 99 from the same location as EC-, but the reduced loadings to the lake in the intervening years have produced a material with PAH, PCB and chlorobenzene levels at approximately one-third of the concentration levels of it predecessor. The single batch of EC- that was prepared consists of more than, subsamples. EC- Lake Sediment g This sample was collected in 9 from locations in Lake Erie and Lake St. Clair, respectively. They (EC- and EC-) are our reference sediments with the lowest levels of toxic organic contaminants. EC- See Page 9 for Analyte Concentrations.
