2014 Course Catalog Cooper University Health Care GENERAL INFORMATION Patient Care Services - Education Division DEPARTMENT OF PATIENT CARE SERVICES, EDUCATION COOPER UNIVERSITY HEALTH CARE In keeping with the hospital s mission to of being committed to world-class patient care, education, and research resulting in a healthier community, the Nursing Education Department at Cooper University Health Care (CUHC) offers an ever-increasing variety of educational activities to our staff. The quality and quantity of educational programs available at CUH has been unsurpassed for many years. Because of our excellent reputation for educational programs, nurses from many other health care facilities attend Cooper education programs. In an effort to assist staff members in meeting their professional goals, Cooper offers programs for all levels of staff and supports their efforts through NJSNA continuing education contact hours, tuition reimbursement, college and trade school affiliations, and on-campus courses. As a New Jersey State Nurse Association (NJSNA) Provider Unit, our continuing nursing education programs are developed around specific goals and objectives with content that incorporates the latest evidence. Programs are delivered using a variety of educational methods including case studies, discussion, lecture, and group work. We utilize the most qualified speakers who are experts in their topics. Many of the speakers are members of the PCS Nursing Education Department or Cooper University Health Care faculty who teach at Cooper Medical School Rowan University and are nationally recognized for their expertise, speaking at many national conferences. We sometimes use speakers from other educational organizations or consultants, in an effort to provide the best current information. Another important part of our education office is the Life Support Training Center. The Life Support Training Team, another important part of the education department at Cooper, is committed to educating the public and professional communities in emergency cardiovascular care. Through an alliance with the American Heart Association, classes are offered in basic life support, advanced cardiac life support, and pediatric life support. The Life Support staff includes board-certified physicians, nurses, respiratory therapists, paramedics, EMTs and others with specialized training and experience. We are pleased to offer our 2014 Educational Course Catalog for your review. We believe that continuing education and professional development are essential in supporting our clinical mission and an integral part of retaining and recruiting staff. 2014 Course Catalog Cooper University Health Care GENERAL INFORMATION Patient Care Services - Education Division COURSE REGISTRATION FOR COOPER EMPLOYEE 1. ALL employees must complete a registration form for each course they plan to attend. 2. Reservations are taken on a first come first serve basis. 3. Submit Conference Request Form to your Manager or Supervisor for signature and send to Patient Care Services - Education Division. The form may also be faxed to (856) 968-8385. 4. You will receive E-mail notification confirming your registration. Call Patient Care Services - Education Division at (856) 342-2459 if you have not received confirmation. 5. Students and Faculty affiliate of schools of nursing with Cooper University Health Care may attend courses per seat availability. Conference registration forms must be completed. COURSE REGISTRATION FOR NON-COOPER EMPLOYEE 1. Complete the registration form (page 100) and make check payable to Cooper University Health Care. Send payment to Patient Care Services Education Division at Cooper University Health Care, One Cooper Plaza, Camden, New Jersey 08103-1489. 2. You may fax a copy of your registration form to hold a space on the attendance sheet until two weeks before the course. Two weeks before the course the space will be given to a paid registrant if we have not received your check. 3. You will receive E-mail notification please bring your confirmation along with you so that Security may direct you to the appropriate course location. 4. Cooper University Health Care reserves the right to cancel courses due to insufficient enrollment, in which case registrants will receive a full refund. 5. In order to receive full or partial refund from Cooper University Health Care, you will need to send a copy of the front and back of cancelled check. LIFE SUPPORT TRAINING CENTER REGISTRATION FORMS: 1. 2014 Course Catalog Cooper University Health Care GENERAL INFORMATION Patient Care Services - Education Division LIFE SUPPORT TRAINING CENTER REGISTRATION FORMS AVAILABLE ONLINE: FEES: All course dates for Basic Life Support (BLS), Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), and Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP), are now easily accessible on the Cooper Health System's web site at www.cooperhealth.org. Click on the green tab Education then choose "Life Support Training" to access the new site. After completing the required information, all forms MUST be printed and then sent to the Life Support Training Center office. Cooper Hospital employees must also print and sign the "No Show / Cancellation" payroll deduction form to complete the registration process. If you have any questions, please contact the Life Support Training Center at (856) 342-2009 or email the office at LifeSupport@cooperhealth.edu. All courses (except for TNCC and ENPC) are free to all Cooper Employees. The fees noted in the catalog are for Non-cooper registrants. ACC Staff - should contact ACC nurse manager for fee structure. Staff should badge in when attending mandatory classes. Note to Managers: Pay code for mandatory classes EDU ACCREDITATION/DESIGNATION/DISCLOSURE: Cooper University Health Care is an approved provider of continuing education by the New Jersey State Nurses Association (P#101-8/12-15). CANCELLATION POLICY: See Registration Form CERTIFICATION MAINTENANCE INFORMATION: Participants enrolled in courses which offer CEUs or contact hours, will receive certificate upon completion of the course. Completion may include successful passing of a written and/or practical examination. 7

SPECIAL NOTES: 1. Course dates and times are subject to change/cancellation based on attendance and unforeseen circumstances. 2. Temperatures in our classrooms vary greatly! Please dress in layers so that you can be comfortable. FLYERS/ANNOUNCEMENTS: Flyers will be distributed in-house as reminders prior to all courses and e-mailed to those addresses on file. Please verify all course dates and locations by checking unit mailboxes and bulletin boards. There is also (1) bulletin board in front of the Nursing Administration office. PARKING: Please refer to map on page 112 for parking areas at Cooper. Cooper staff should park in your usual parking location. Non-Cooper Staff please note parking is not included in the fee for the course. Fee for parking is approximately $10.00 per day. Non-Cooper staff should park in the Camden County Improvement Authority (CCIA) / One Cooper Plaza Parking Garage on Benson Street behind the main hospital. Consider using transportation via the High-speed Line it is located across the street from Cooper. The stop is Rand Transportation Center. 8

Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) The goal of the PALS Provider Course is to teach healthcare providers to recognize respiratory failure and shock and to identify risk factors for cardiopulmonary arrest in infants and children. This course provides participants with strategies for preventing injuries and cardiopulmonary arrest in infants and children. It also teaches participants how to perform the cognitive and psychomotor skills for resuscitating and stabilizing infants and children in respiratory failure, shock, or cardiopulmonary arrest. Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) The Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) is an educational program designed to teach life support skills to all healthcare providers that are present at the birth of a baby. The NRP course is designed to give the healthcare provider the basic knowledge to care for the neonatal patient in cardiac arrest and to manage resuscitation efforts in conditions that may lead to arrest. This course will provide the skills necessary to resuscitate a newborn and to work smoothly as a team with other healthcare professionals. Heartsaver First Aid Course The Heartsaver First Aid Course teaches rescuers the knowledge and psychomotor skills they need to recognize emergencies at the worksite and give First Aid.
