We are pledged to offer you pertinent, timely and effective learning opportunities. Our goal is to offer the best educational sessions in the country so that you can be the best nurse, physician, respiratory therapist, lab technician, pharmacist, or health professional in the nation. As we grow as a System and a Center, we also pledge to bring you these courses in formats that are uniquely suited to your learning styles and times - whether you are at work, home or anywhere in the world. 5 introduction The PACCAR Medical Education Center, located on the campus of Adena Regional Medical Center in Chillicothe, Ohio, was created as a breakthrough initiative to meet the future needs for health care professionals in our region - from nurses and physicians, to allied health professionals. The primary initial focus is to offer local, quality nursing education in South Central Ohio. The Center offers a pre - licensure Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree program through Wright State Miami Valley College of Nursing and Health. Students in the program will be able to complete prerequisite courses at Ohio University - Chillicothe, or another college, and BSN coursework at the Center. In addition, cohorts of Adena Health System Associate Degree Nurses currently are earning their BSN degree via Ohio University with classes being held at the PACCAR Medical Education Center. The Center also provides continuing education and training programs for allied health professionals and physicians, placing Adena on the map as a regional learning center for medical professionals. 3

6 course information Advanced Cardiac Life Support Intended Audience: For healthcare providers who either direct or participate in the resuscitation of a patient, whether in or out of the hospital. Pre - requisites: Basic cardiac rhythm course (ECG interpretation) and Professional level of CPR/AED. Description: Through the ACLS course, providers will enhance their skills in the treatment of the adult victim of a cardiac arrest or other cardiopulmonary emergencies. ACLS emphasizes the importance of basic life support CPR to patient survival; the integration of effective, basic life support with advanced cardiovascular life support interventions; and the importance of effective team interaction and communication during resuscitation. ACLS is based on simulated clinical scenarios that encourage active, hands-on participation through learning stations where students will practice essential skills individually, as part of a team, and as a team leader. Realistic simulations reinforce the following key concepts: proficiency in basic life support care; recognizing and initiating early management of peri-arrest conditions; managing cardiac arrest; identifying and treating ischemic chest pain and acute coronary syndromes; recognizing other life-threatening clinical situations (such as stroke) and providing initial care; ACLS algorithms; and effective resuscitation team dynamics. 7 CPR Pro for Professional Rescuers Intended Audience: For health care providers, first responders, and professional rescuers in and outside the hospital or for those who need professional-level basic life support training as a job requirement. Pre-requisites: None Objectives: Demonstrate proper removal of contaminated gloves. Place an unresponsive breathing victim in a recovery position. Perform effective rescue breathing with a pocket mask and bag-mask device (with or without supplemental oxygen). Perform effective chest compressions. Perform effective CPR with 1 and 2 or more rescuers. Safely and correctly attach and operate an AED. Coordinate CPR and AED to minimize interruptions in chest compressions Perform the steps to manage choking in the responsive and unresponsive victim. 8 course information CONT. Orientation to the Care of the Acute and Critically Ill Patient Intended Audience: New nurse hires for departments such as ICU, CPCU, ED, Float Pool and Telemetry Units. Pre-requisites: None Description: A blended learning course (online and classroom participation) that provides a comprehensive introduction to critical care nursing. The course focuses on fundamentals of critical care nursing, providing the theoretical foundation necessary to care for acute and critically ill patients. Composed of seven learning modules, each focusing on a specific body system, detailed anatomy and physiology, and review of the most common disorders of the system are included. Case scenarios are then simulated in the David Meade Massie Virtual Hospital to further facilitate learning. 9 Nursing Preceptor Workshop Goal: To provide nurses with the knowledge and skill to positively impact the orientation experience. Objectives: By the end of the course the nurse preceptor will: 1) Verbalize the difference between a preceptor and mentor. 2) Provide a safe learning environment for the orientee. 3) Preceptor will develop individualized orientation plan with orientee. 4) Learner will perform preceptor functions. 5) Preceptor will Identify resources within the healthcare organization to assist in improving the orientation experience for orientees and preceptors. 6) Learner will understand responsibility of documentation. Provider/Renewal Intended Audience: This course is intended for health care providers; for example, medical, nursing, paramedics, respiratory therapists, dentists, pharmacists or allied health professionals whose daily occupation demands proficiency in the knowledge and skills of pediatric life support. Objectives: The goals of the Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) Course are to provide the participant with: Information needed for recognizing the infant/child at risk of cardiopulmonary arrest. Information and strategies for preventing cardiopulmonary arrest in infants/children. Cognitive and psychomotor skills necessary to resuscitate and stabilize the infant/child in respiratory failure, shock or cardiopulmonary arrest. 11 Advanced Electronic Fetal Monitoring (EFM) Intended audience: This course is intended for healthcare providers whose daily occupation demands proficiency in the knowledge and skills of advanced electronic fetal monitoring and have completed the basic electronic fetal monitoring course. Limited to obstetric department employees with one year of labor and delivery experience. Description: This two day course focuses on the advanced electronic fetal monitoring concepts and the interpretation of fetal monitoring strips. Objectives: Identify differences between external and internal monitoring components in addition, their benefits and limitations. Differentiate between twin A and twin B and recognize the difference between synchronous and asynchronous accelerations of the twins. Identify the difference between strength and intensity of contractions and differentiate between the 5 types of uterine activity. List standard antepartal tests and parameters of fetal status for each test. Recognize baseline fetal heart rate characteristics including classification of variability, physiology of variability, and documentation guidelines. Identify fetal heart rate accelerations. Identify four types of decelerations and fetal/maternal cause of each and list interventions and rationale for each type of deceleration. Differentiate between reassuring, non-reassuring, and compensatory fetal heart rate patterns. Interpret blood gases and differentiate between hypoxia, acidemia, two types of acidosis, and asphyxia. Differentiate between artifact and arrhythmia, in addition, identify types of dysrhythmias and nursing interventions associated with each dysrhythmia. Review FHR patterns seen in research. Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) Provider/Renewal Intended audience: This course is intended for healthcare providers; for example, medical, nursing, paramedics, respiratory therapists, dentists, pharmacists or allied health professionals whose daily occupation demands proficiency in the knowledge and skills of neonatal resuscitation in the delivery room and outside of the delivery room. Description: The Neonatal Resuscitation Program is based on the American Academy of Pediatrics and American Heart Association Guidelines for Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and Cardiovascular Care of the Neonate. The one day provider course is focused on the resuscitation of the neonate immediately following birth, including return demonstration and a written test. The two hour renewal course will focus on the written test and the satisfactory performance of a code case scenario. Objectives: State the most important and effective action in neonatal resuscitation. Describe the characteristics of primary and secondary apnea. List, in correct sequence, the steps on the resuscitation flow diagram that correspond with assessment, airway, breathing, circulation and drugs. 13 Basic EKG Intended Audience: Required for all nurses that work on a telemetry unit. Other staff that interact with cardiac patients or handle electrocardiograms may benefit from this course. Description: This course provides an introduction to cardiac rhythm interpretation. Objectives: Learner will Using the course textbook, review anatomy and physiology of the heart including the conduction system. Given various EKG tracings, identify the site of origin of the impulse, rhythm, rate, and abnormalities of the cardiac cycle according to the performance checklist. Given an EKG tracing with an arrhythmia, determine the appropriate first line interventions to treat the patient. Apply the electrodes in the appropriate positions on the manikin, based on desired limb lead view. Assessment & Intervention of Respiratory Symptoms Intended Audience: ICU, CPCU, Float Pool, 2A, 3A, 3B, ED and Respiratory Description: AIRS is an eight hour course intended to develop assessment skills and recognition for intervention and mechanical ventilation of the acutely ill pulmonary patient. Pre-requisites: None Objectives: Recognize respiratory deficiencies and lung diseases. Understand arterial blood gases and their causes. Understand different modes of ventilation. Identify the reasons and treatment for over - sedation. Indicate when intervention and mechanical ventilation is needed. Demonstrate assessment skills in the David Meade Massie Virtual Hospital. Understand tracheostomy risks and proper care. 15 Cardiac S.T.A.B.L.E. - Facilitated through Nationwide Children s Hospital Intended audience: This course is intended for healthcare providers, for example, medical, nursing, paramedics, respiratory therapists, dentists, pharmacists or allied health professionals whose daily occupation demands proficiency in the knowledge and skills of the stabilization of the newborn with suspected congenital heart defects. It is recommended that you attend the S.T.A.B.L.E. course prior to attending this course. Description: A four-hour course that focuses on a concise guideline of neonatal stabilization activities to be used by caregivers prior to the transport of a newborn with a congenital heart defect. 22 course information cont. PCA Class Intended audience: All newly hired Patient Care Associates (PCAs) or experienced PCAs who would like to brush up on basic skills. Description: The PCA class is designed to provide PCAs with knowledge and information needed to perform their job duties. This includes basic care delivery, patient transfers, and return demonstration of high risk or invasive skills. Objectives: Upon completion of this course, the participants will apply increased knowledge and evidence-based practice regarding: Define the roles and responsibilities of a Patient Care Associate (PCA). Define the terms center of gravity, base of support, and combined center of gravity. Demonstrate proper body mechanics with supine to sit and stand pivot transfers. List precautions in regards to transferring stroke patients versus other diagnoses. Discuss basic care delivery. Perform satisfactory return demonstration of high risk or invasive skills. Log in using your ID and password. If you have forgotten your ID or password, click on Need Learner ID and follow prompts. Click under Quick Links Self-Enroll-Classes & Events. Click on List Events. The event name, date/time, location, and enrollment availability of all classroom events will be displayed. If you would like to search a specific event, type in the name of the event in the search box. Click on Enroll for the event you wish to enroll. Complete the event enrollment request form. If you have an adena.org , please list this on the form. You may also list your home address if you prefer. Click on Enroll Now. If you are enrolling for a multi-day class, please sign up for each consecutive class as indicated in the course description. A confirmation letter will be displayed. Click print for a copy.
