SoftLayer Fundamentals STORAGE (DISK) 2

Storage Basics SAN Block based NAS File based RAID RAID 0: Striping, no fault tolerance Appears like local storage to hosts Accessed through shares (CIFS) or exports (NFS) on network Raid 1: Mirroring Raid 5: Striping, fault tolerant w/ 1 parity disk Disk Type SAS/SCSI SATA Raid 6: Striping, fault tolerant w/ 2 parity disks Raid 10: Striping across mirroring SSD Hot Spare 3

Storage Options within SoftLayer Local Disks Mass Storage (QuantStor) Virtual Instance (Public or Private) iscsi SAN (shared) NAS Bare Metal Object Storage Direct Access Indirect Access 4

Local Disks Ideal for storage-intensive applications with high I/O needs: Operating System Database software Application software Virtual Servers First disk: 25 and 100 GB Second disk: Local: 25, 100, 150, 200 and 300 GB Bare Metal Servers Solid State Drive (SSD): 32, 50, 64, 100, 200, 400 and 800 GB SAS 10K or 15K: 73, 147, 300, 450 and 600 GB SATA 10K: 74 GB, 150 GB, and 300 GB SATA 7.2K: 250, 500 and 750 GB, 1, 2, 3 and 4 TB 5

Quantastor What is it? A SAN/NAS (iscsi/nfs) Storage System OS Runs on dedicated hardware, with option of 10GbE Web Gui access with ease of use controls Licensed by TB (see picture in the right) Features such as thin provisioning, I/O optimization, grow raid/pool, asynchronous replication Why is this good? More control for customer Flexible storage Cost effective storage IOPS are stable because its not multitenant Example use case: For customers looking for cost effective, mass storage with stable IOPS. 6

Performance considerations for local disks Ranked performance of disks 7

iscsi SAN (shared hardware) What is it? iscsi storage offers a low-cost alternative to traditional fiberchannel storage solutions. Delivered as iscsi over Ethernet utilizing Dell EqualLogic iscsi SAN Array Why is this good? Allows replication across data centers (point-in-time snapshots). Can be used as primary disks for a virtual instance or as a persistent storage device for any type of compute resource. Provides a safer-than-local-disk place to store critical files since iscsi LUNs are provisioned on Equalogic clusters that are managed by SoftLayer storage engineers. Example use case: Low / Medium-duty servers that require reliable storage High-Availability clusters with low to medium IOPS requirements 8

iscsi SAN size options 1 to 4 additional SAN disks 1 additional SAN disk Virtual Server (Public or Private) Bare Metal Server 10 GB 20 GB 25 GB 30 GB 50 GB 75 GB 100 GB 125 GB 150 GB 175 GB 200 GB 250 GB 300 GB 350 GB 400 GB 500 GB 750 GB 1 TB 2 TB 1 GB 20 GB 40 GB 80 GB 100 GB 120 GB 250 GB 500 GB 1 TB 2 TB 3 TB SoftLayer does not guarantee IOPS on iscsi. Ranges from 1,000 to 7,000 IOPS are typical. Ranges can differ based on time of the day and PoD location. Customers whose applications require IOPS higher than the 1,000 to 7,000 range should consider using SoftLayer bare metal dedicated servers with internal disk drives (detailed on the previous slide). 9

iscsi SAN Performance considerations 10

NAS What is it? Disk space accessible via CIFS Intended for backups (requires customer backup tool), archives and less-frequently accessed files Backended by EqualLogic (except for legacy NAS) Why is this good? Safe target for off-server backup archives Many to one Many Servers can use one NAS account Example use case: Repository for customers with long retention policies (6 mos, 1yr, 5yr, etc) 1 GB 20 GB 40 GB 80 GB 100 GB 250 GB 500 GB 1 TB 2 TB Customers interact with their NAS and FTP storage primarily within the command line or terminal within the OS or through point-and-click interaction for control panels. Within the Customer Portal, NAS details and usage can be viewed, but the service itself may not be manipulated outside of the command line, kernel or control panel. 11 NOT at all recommended as a production file server

Object Storage Built on OpenStack, Searchable, Taggable Clusters in Dallas, Singapore, Amsterdam Primarily used for web content, both static and streaming media Accessed through Https (rest api), CDN, Portal, and Mobile App Dynamic Storage Pay as you go Cost Effective (starts at $0.10 per GB) Max File size = 4 GB 12

Content Delivery Network (CDN) The SoftLayer Content Delivery Network (CDN) utilizes Edgecast and includes robust tools for digital rights management and content monetization. Distribution Options Origin Pull Dynamic content PoP Pull Static content The first time content is request, it s pulled from the host server to the network and stays there for other users to access it. Pay As You Go or monthly pricing is based only on bandwidth used Customers pre-load content (using a variety of methods). That content is pulled from the CDN FTP as opposed to being pulled from the customer s origin location. Pay As You Go or monthly pricing is based on bandwidth and storage used, with mix and match plans. Gives end users a better download experience, reduces load on origin servers (allowing fewer servers at the origin) Generally NOT a money-saving tactic. Excellent for large and small static files that need quick access by users in a geographic area Integrated with SoftLayer Object Storage 13

CDN Map 14

Data Transfer Services Customer can send media to SoftLayer: CD, DVD, Hard Drive, USB 2.0 Must be 208 Volt compatible Portal form creates request and includes carrier, tracking number, destination datacenter choice. This allows customers an alternative to network upload when they initially seed their servers. 15

SoftLayer Fundamentals BACKUP 16

e-vault Backup What is it? Data backup that is encrypted and compressed in transit as well as encrypted at rest on the vault Customers can choose a vault in an alternate city Agents are offered that enable backing up MS SQL Server, Exchange, Oracle, VMware ESX Simple web-based graphical user interface to initiate all backups and restores. Hourly, daily, weekly and custom backup schedules Backup full systems, specific directories or even individual files Why is this good? Backup software that is set-and-forget (ready to use) Example use case: Almost *any* server that has an automated backup requirement VMware virtualization environment backups 17

Idera What is it? A Backup software installed on a Dedicated Server, which protects data at a block level Backups can be done to local disks, iscsi or NAS spaces Customers can provision a dedicated server in any datacenter and Add the Idera CDP to it. Idera Disk Agents are sold individual or in bundles. MySQL Agent can be sold separately. Why is this good? Single platform to manage all your backups Agents can be used on self managed VM s Example use case: I have selfmanaged hypervisor and need to back up my VMs on a filelevel. Can also be used to backup non-softlayer systems. 18

Bring your own backup software Customer can also use their own backup software Data can be backed up to local disk, iscsi SAN, NAS or Quantastor Good for customer that already have backup software licenses 19

Constraints (Disk and Backup) Disk: Workloads which require intensive IOPS that can not be satisfied with local drives, such as: High availability clusters, which usually require shared disks support Needs to scale more than allowed by local drives (usually 6TB in RAID 10) Backup No tape backup available 20
