Our Process How We Work With You 8 When you work with the 411 Group at Morgan Stanley Smith Barney, you work with a team of professionals who are available any time to address any concern, answer any questions or explain how or why we re going to position your portfolio for various market conditions and specific objectives. You will have one primary relationship manager, but depending on your needs, you may work with one or more members of the team, each of whom have experience covering a wide variety of situations. For example, Larry is an equities specialist, Joe creates financial plans, oversees and manages investment strategies, and Tom focuses on fixed income, mutual funds, and long-term-care issues. As for our investment philosophy, we use a technical based approach, employing asset allocation and sector selection based on relative strength, combined with the fundamental research resources of Morgan Stanley Smith Barney. Rather than be constrained by a single investment orthodoxy, we seek to approach your portfolio from multiple perspectives, striving to balance risk and reward. Charles Darwin said that the fittest win out at the expense of their rivals because they succeed in adapting MORGAN STANLEY SMITH BARNEY themselves best to their environment. We believe that a dynamic and adaptable approach to managing your investments provides us with the best potential to help you meet your goals. When you come to us as a new client the first thing we do is create a financial plan based on your specific goals, whether it s saving for retirement, putting money away for your children s college education, or to one day buy that lake house you ve always wanted. We segregate your assets into different pools specifically assigned to each goal, and manage them accordingly. That way, your retirement, your children s education, and your vacation house investments will be guided by the specific goal rather than a broad and ambiguous strategy that may or may not be appropriate to the goal in mind. Be assured that whatever your goals, we take great pride in the personalized service we offer and strive to keep you as involved as you wish in the entire process. We believe that a disciplined and consistent process removes emotion from the equation and helps maximize the opportunity to meet your objectives. Our process is divided into four steps; figuring out what you want to accomplish, analyze your situation, create and implement a comprehensive plan, and then continue to monitor that plan, making any adjustments to make sure it stays on course toward your goals. STEP 1 - Getting to know you. Before we can make any recommendations, we first need to fully understand your needs, your concerns, what keeps you up at night, your risk tolerance, your time horizons, and your ultimate goals. Like any professional relationship, it all begins with a meeting, where we get to know you and you get to know us, as well as how we can work together. We ll explain our investment philosophy and if we can mutually agree that we re a good fit, we ll conduct an in-depth interview and collect essential personal and financial data. STEP 2 - Analyze your situation and financial data. Once we assess your situation, we ll provide an executive summary of our understanding of your goals and concerns and current situation followed by recommendations on follow-up steps or actions, prioritized chronologically based on our sense of the importance of addressing the issue involved. At this point, if you want to pursue a more formalized relationship, we ll develop
a comprehensive personalized financial plan with specific recommendations tied to your goals and objectives. STEP 3 - Prepare a personalized plan: Our plans are very adaptable to changes in the market as well as your life. They contain our investment recommendations and strategies. We then present a draft plan to you for review and, if needed, make appropriate changes. Once you agree on the plan, we ll present specific products or services to be used explaining each one so you have a thorough understanding of any investment we make on your behalf. STEP 4 - Review, adjust, adapt. Any plan, by its nature, is a snapshot in time. Recognizing this, we ll monitor your plan on an ongoing basis to help you stay on course toward your goals. We also adjust and adapt it to any new life events, changed situations, or revised goals as you move through your life.
