Automated Cloud Environment Build Service Service Definition Cloud Application Design, Delivery and Integration (DDI) 1
1. Summary 1.1 Service Description This offering is provided by IBM Global Business Services Application Innovation Services and provides an Automated Cloud Environment build capabilty. IaaS cloud hosting solutions provide flexible, elastic, software configurable virtual hardware. However the cloud infrastructure is often supplied in an unconfigured state leaving customers to install their own virtual machines, network confirmation and storage configuration. The design and build of a system environment can take many weeks of effort. The use of an automated cloud environment build service can dramatically reduce the time to design and build system environments. The time is reduced via the use of pre-existing UK Government accredited environment patterns and an automated cloud environment build service. IBM has built an environment automator for the Home Office and this service will where possible reuse this Home Office asset. The automated cloud environment build service automatically creates cloud environments comprising of compute, storage and network from an environment specification document. The environment automator integrates with the IaaS cloud host provided API to take an empty virtual data centre and populate it with the specified virtual machines, networks and firewalls. Each of the virtual machines automatically gets an operating system image and software (middleware and applications) automatically installed as part of the build process. The environment automator is based on open software such as Puppet, Jenkins and utilises RPM packages to automate the deployment of build artefacts. The environment automator uses an environment specification document to determine what to create and deploy onto the cloud. The environment specification document describes the virtual machines required, their inter connections, what software is required to be installed and the machine specific configuration settings. The use of a specification document to build the cloud environment means that environments can be replicated and repeatedly built very quickly with minimal manual effort. IBM can supply sample environment specification documents to base new environment on. In a typical deployment the following project specific activities are also required. IBM can further exploit the use of the automated capability by assisting with the solution design work and supplying examples of previously UK Government accredited solutions: Network design: A secure network infrastructure suitable for the security level of the system running in the environment Infrastructure design: The virtual machines, their network location and what software runs on each Automated Cloud Environment Build Service 2
Systems monitoring design: Determines how will your environment be monitored for errors and failures Application packaging: Creating auto install packages of all software required by the system to be used by the environment automator Once the above activities are complete the IBM environment automator can create environment instances in a matter of minutes or hours depending on the scale and complexity of the environment. Benefits Based on open source technology so the costs of using the automation framework is lower than if using traditional commercial software products. Stand-up virtual server based environments within minutes/hours, in a consistent, controlled and repeatable fashion. This is a dramatic departure from the days of Weeks and months required to procure hardware, install, network and configure and then manually deploy OS, software and applications Procurement & management of data-centre or infrastructure supplier Lengthy comparisons of environment configuration to determine the reasons for inconsistent environment behaviour Environments to be created in a consistent manner through design patterns Enables consistent naming and IP allocation provides granularity of billing Change control and consistency realised by repeating comparison of environment to defined version controlled baseline. Environments can be stood up quickly and be decommissioned quickly in order to meet project demand Environment patterns (e.g. provision of a secure network) can be quickly reused in order 1.2 Service Characteristics Characteristic Lot Specialist Cloud Services Description Applicability Any medium-large public sector body that wishes to create a streamline their builds of cloud environments Contract Duration Contract Price Lead time to start Related Lot(s) /Offering(s) Flexible to be agreed in the Call-Off Order Variable based on time and materials depending on agreeing, with the Contracting Authority, the resources required for the Call-Off Order, based on the IBM SFIA rate table. 2. Delivery 2.1 Context This offering is provided by IBM Global Business Services Application Innovation Services and provides an Automated Cloud Environment Build capability. 2.2 Commercials This will be a Time and Materials Contract; however, following the first phase of the work, there could be the opportunity to discuss the conversion of the initial quote into a Fixed Price, Time and Material or Risk/Reward based contract in order to provide increased flexibility for the customer. Initial work will be carried out under the Strategy and Architecture category of the IBM SFIA rate table unless agreed otherwise. Follow on work will be under the appropriate category(ies) of the IBM SFIA rate table. The scope of work will be set out in the Call Off Order Form and agreed by both parties. Follow on services to enable you to complete implementation of cloud services can be provided by IBM. Details should be agreed via the Call-Off Order and priced using the IBM SFIA rate card. 2.3 Key Points Other key points to note are as follows: This offering is subject to availability of IBM resources. The Charges for this Service are on the basis that no Parent Company Guarantee is required. If one is required and agreed to by IBM then the Charges will be revised accordingly. For Fixed Price offerings, Travel and Subsistence (T&S) costs are included for work within the M25. For work outside the M25, T&S will be payable using the Contracting Body s standard T&S rates. The pricing and terms on individual call-off orders should be handled as commercially sensitive by the Contracting Body. Where work is of a sensitive and secure nature, security standards will be agreed between IBM and the Contracting Body, and if necessary IBM will ask the Contracting Body to issue a Security Aspects letter.
