IMAGES AND FASHION AT LE PETIT PALAIS PAR PATRICK DEMARCHELIER From September 27 TH, 2008 until January 4 TH, 2009, Le Petit Palais, Musée des Beaux Arts de la Ville de Paris, presents a comprehensive selection of 400 photographs by Patrick Demarchelier. Le Petit Palais, an artistic philosophy Le Petit Palais aesthetic philosophy combines three fundamental concepts: the aesthetic and intellectual experience, and the creative process. The latter creates a resonance between France s traditional and contemporary art stimulating an exchange between both the artist and the public. Each fall, Le Petit Palais hosts within its permanent collection, works by contempory artists (painters, sculptors, photographers, printmakers and video-artists) in order to advance its philosophy. Diamonds, February 2000 The art of photography, considered until recently a lesser art, has finally been recognized as a fine art. Photography exhibitions are increasingly popular around the world. This holds even more truth in the world of fashion where the image is essential. France, a source of many talents, benefits from a unique aura in this craft. «A photographer is someone fragile. We must constantly renew ourselves. For me, each project is a new challenge and whatever was done before is forgotten». Patrick Demarchelier 3

ECHOES AT LE PETIT PALAIS «At Le Petit Palais in1998, the exhibition La Gloire d Alexandre combined contemporary photography, for the first time, with archeological artifacts. Alongside Jean Yves Empereur s extraordinary sub-marine findings, Carlos Freire s photographs revealed to the public the faces of actual residents living in that mythical village. The same vision inspired the subsequent exhibitions: Bruno Barbey: Tresors du Royaume; Ferrante Ferranti: Bresil Baroque; Roland and Sabrina Michaud: Chine la gloire des empereurs, and others including Augustin Estrada, Enrique Guzman, Mariana Yampolsky, Vida Yovanovich: Soleils Mexicains. In this exhibition, Patrick Demarchelier s photography offers a contemporary aesthetic that is fused with the museum s permanent collection. Traditional European work and contemporary photography are intertwined such that the public will be surprised, stimulated and awakened creating an experience whereby the spirit can roam freely... Patrick Demarchelier s fashion photographs emphasize yet another cultural objective of Le Petit Palais philosophy - the recognition of the art of fashion. Many fashion shows took place at Le Petit Palais where students of Sakina M sa would revel before the latest design in her costume workshop within the walls of the permanent collection. Today, we welcome once more the new trends of prêt-a-porter fashion shows. Patrick Demarchelier s sensitivity, deep sense of humanity, respect for his subjects, and ability to unearth passion in each individual advances the museum s aesthetic commitment. Regardless of whether the subject is famous or unknown, they vibrate to the frequency of the photographer s generous gaze. And the visitor is carried away by the life force bursting from the model s eyes. A museum is a source of life and a place of humanity. May all the faces of Patrick Demarchlier s portraits intertwined with the faces painted on Greek vases, Dutch paintings of the XIX Century portraits bring to all a greater love and understanding of one another...» Gilles Chazal Curator-in-chief Director of le Petit Palais 4

THE «DEMARCHELIER TOUCH» Patrick Demarchelier s style and talent has elevated his name to the pantheon of the great photographers. An autodidact, he became one of the most talented photographers in the world of fashion and beauty. The «Demarchelier touch» is an absolute reference among the legends of the fashion world. On the 4 th of July, 2007, the prestigious Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) presented him with the «Eleanor Lambert Award» to honor his esteemed career and «his unique contribution to the world of fashion». AN EYE THAT EXHALTS THE INTUITIVE AND THE COMPLEX Patrick Demarchelier loves spontaneity. It s at the beginning or end of a photo shoot that he unveils the subjects natural essence. A state of mind that he pursues to capture. The «Demarchelier touch» is spontaneity and positive vision projected upon his subject. Under the umbrella of diversity and contrast, this exhibition travels through several decades of inspiration where portraits of celebrities hang side-by- side with portraits of unknown muses Dior, Pirelli Calendar 2008 French Vogue, October 2007 5

CELEBRITIES IN-FOCUS Patrick Demarchelier s artistic approach for a photo shoot is identical whether it s with a celebrity or a fashion model. He seeks to unveil the sublime natural essence of his subject and reveal their inner optimism. Robert de Niro, Tom Cruise, Paul Newman, Nicole Kidman, Julia Roberts, Elton John, Lenny Kravitz, Gianni Versace, Warren Beatty, Madonna, Quincy Jones, Oprah Winfrey, John Galliano, Jean Paul Gaultier, Marc Jacobs, Karl Lagerfeld, Ralph Lauren, Laura Bush, Président Bill Clinton, Ronald Reagan, etc.. All the above have posed for Patrick Demarchelier. Madonna, 1990 Invited by the Princess Diana in 1989, he agrees to photograph her with a hair stylist and make-up artist. As a result of this first encounter, she asked him to become her official photographer. He, therefore, became the first non-british official photographer of the Royal family. Beyond his privileged status, he was a dear friend of Lady Diana until her tragic death. Linda Evangelista, November 1994 Meg Ryan, January 2001 6

PATRICK DEMARCHELIER A PASSIONATE JOURNEY Patrick Demarchelier was born near Paris in 1943 to a modest family. He spent his childhood in Le Havre with his mother and four brothers. For his seventeenth birthday, his stepfather bought him his first «Kodak» camera. He quickly became a natural behind the camera. Then he learned how to develop film, retouch negatives, began shooting friends and weddings FASHION FROM PARIS TO NEW YORK He started working in a dark-room for a young women s finishing school where he put together portfolios for the students. There, he perfected his technique, sharpened his eye and began to develop his personal «style». He discovered fashion photography by working as a free-lance photographer. His work drew the attention of Elle, Marie-Claire, 20 ans Magazine in France, Italy and in Germany. In 1975, he left France for New York without speaking a single word of English with the intention to follow his girlfriend who left him before he even arrived this trip would launch him on his journey to become one of the greatest fashion photographers. He learned English on the street and by watching TV. He began his international career working for Glamour and Mademoiselle Magazines. He later worked for Vogue magazine and Harper s Bazaar (Hearst Publications) in September 1992 which resulted in a 12-year collaboration. Demarchelier s work rapidly became recognized by key players in the fashion industry and he was quickly solicited to shoot prestigious international advertising campaigns. Dior, Louis Vuitton, Céline, Tag Heuer, Chanel, Yves Saint Laurent, Lacoste Lancôme, Guerlain, Calvin Klein, Ralph Lauren, Versace, Giorgio Armani, Gianfranco Ferre, Anne Klein, Valentino, Prada, Gucci, Dolce & Gabbana, Salvatore Ferragamo, Donna Karan, Michael Kors... 7

In 2004, he embarked upon a new exclusive relationship with Condé Nast publications (Glamour, Mademoiselle, Vogue etc) where he continues to grace hundreds of covers with his photographs. On November 23 rd, 2007, Mrs Christine ALBANEL, Minister of Culture, honored Patrick Demarchelier as an Officier dans l ordre des Arts et des Lettres on the 50 th anniversary of this most prestigious award that is only bestowed upon great artists. Exhibitions : 1995 : Tony Shafrazi Gallery - New York (USA) 1996 : Festival de la photo de mode de Biarritz (France) 1997 : Exposing Elegance, Musée d'art Contemporain de Monterrey (Mexique) 2000 : Forms, Pavillon d Art Contemporain Milan (Italie) Bibliography : 1996 : Patrick Demarchelier : Photographs ed. EXHIBITION DESIGN AT LE PETIT PALAIS «In developing this exhibition, our main objective was to combine Patrick Demarchelier s visual universe with Le Petit Palais permanent collection. The first step was to meticulously select the photographs and conceptualize an aesthetic layout that combines the museum s traditional collection to create a cohesive stylistic design. The process became gradually more intuitive because the mixture of images creates a dialogue between each individual print, each cluster of prints and the traditional artworks. In this visual environment, our desire is to celebrate the opposition and contradictions that appear. This installation does not prescribe a fixed narrative, but rather brings harmony to chaos and contrast. This marriage of many contrasts unites the visitors in a contemporary visual osmosis.» Pascal Dangin Creative Director 9

THE PETIT PALAIS, MUSEE DES BEAUX-ARTS DE LA VILLE DE PARIS Christophe Fouin An architectural gem from the XIX Century, le Petit Palais, Musée des Beaux Arts de la ville de Paris, has reopened its doors to the public after major renovations. Built for the Universal Exhibition in 1900, this building became in 1902 the Musée des Beaux Arts de la ville de Paris. It displays a beautiful collection of paintings, religious icons, sculptures, antique rugs, and art objects from Antiquity to the turn of the XX Century. The Antique and Medieval collections are side-by-side with artworks from the French and Italian Renaissance and Dutch and Flemish paintings. The the XVIII th and XIX th Century collection includes works by the prestigious artists including: Fragonard, David, Géricault, Delacroix, Courbet, Pissarro, Monet, Renoir, Sisley, Cézanne. The Museum boasts an important collection of works on paper including complete series of etchings by Rembrandt, Durer and Callot. The contemporary art and fashion design have a strong presence in le Petit Palais, Since 1998, Zao Wou- Ki, Quentin Blake, the collections du Fond Municipal d art contemporain Sakina M Sa and now Patrick Demarchelier occupy the rooms of Le Petit Palais. These temporary exhibits further the cultural mission of the establishment: promoting an aesthetic and intellectual experience of the creative process. On the international front, since 1998, le Petit Palais offers its great cultural heritage in partnership with major cultural institutions abroad. A café and gift shop are located in the inner court-yard. The museum is open to the public every day from 10AM until 6PM, except on Mondays and national holidays. Free admission for the permanent collections and the garden. 10

For those who are ready to give everything, we can give a little. On September 29 th, a charity gala will be held to benefit Police-Action Solidaire (1). The opening gala for Patrick Demarchelier s exhibition at the Petit Palais will raise funds for the social mandate of Police-Action Solidaire, for whom Patrick shares a deep solidarity with the men and women who risk their lives each day to protect their citizens. Each year, several thousand police officers are injured or killed on duty Police-Action Solidaire offers support to deceased members of the police force (2) and their loved-ones. The organization supports parents, spouses, and especially children of fallen officers by providing emotional and financial assistance including academic scholarships This is why the mission of Police-Action Solidaire is so important. To accomplish their ambitious goals, such as a specialized rehabilitation center, the financial needs are significant and constant. (1) Police-Action Solidaire is a department of the U.A.CP.P.S.I, an association created 1920 is recognized officially as «a charitable organization». (2) The men and women who have chosen to risk their lives each day for the protection of others: Police officers, Gendarmes, Firemen and women, etc 11
