OP 8: Building Energy Cnsumptin 6 pints available A. Credit Ratinale This credit recgnizes institutins that have reduced their building energy usage. B. Criteria Part 1 Institutin has reduced its ttal building energy cnsumptin per grss square ft/metre f flr area cmpared t a baseline. Part 2 Institutin s annual building energy cnsumptin is less than the minimum perfrmance threshld f 28 Btu per grss square ft (2.6 Btu per grss square metre) f flr area per degree day. Perfrmance fr Part 2 f this credit is assessed using EUI-adjusted flr area, a figure that accunts fr significant differences in energy use intensity (EUI) between types f building space. C. Applicability This credit applies t all institutins. D. Scring Each part is scred independently. Pints earned are calculated accrding t the frmulas belw. Please nte that users d nt have t calculate the number f pints earned themselves; pints will be calculated autmatically when the data listed under Sectin E: Reprting Fields is entered in the nline Reprting Tl. Part 1 Institutins earn the maximum f 3 pints available fr Part 1 f this credit by reducing building energy cnsumptin per grss square ft/metre f flr area by 50 percent cmpared t a baseline. Partial pints are awarded based n the reductin achieved. Fr example, an institutin that reduced building energy cnsumptin per grss square ft/metre f flr area by 25 percent wuld earn 1.5 pints (half f the pints available fr Part 1 f this credit). Scring fr Part 1 is based n surce energy, a figure that accunts fr the energy used ffsite t generate and transprt grid-purchased electricity and district steam/ht water t the institutin. Fr scring purpses, grid-purchased electricity and district steam/ht water are cnverted t surce energy thrugh the use f an apprpriate surce-site rati. STARS 2.0 Technical Manual 155 OP Energy

STARS calculates ttal building energy cnsumptin (surce energy) accrding t the fllwing frmula. Please nte that users will nt have t calculate this figure themselves; the result will be calculated autmatically when data are entered int the nline Reprting Tl. Ttal building energy cnsumptin (surce energy) = [A (B + D)] + (B C) + (D E) A = B = C = D = E = Ttal building energy cnsumptin, all surces (MMBtu) Grid-purchased electricity fr buildings (MMBtu) Surce-site rati fr grid-purchased electricity (see Sectin F. Measurement) District steam/ht water fr buildings (MMBtu) Surce-site rati fr district steam/ht water (see Sectin F. Measurement) Pints earned fr Part 1 f this credit are calculated accrding t the frmula belw. STARS awards nly psitive pints; pints will nt be deducted if building energy cnsumptin per grss square ft/metre f cnditined flr area increased rather than decreased during the time perid. Pints Earned = 6 { [ (A/B) - (C/D) ] / (A/B) } A = Ttal building energy cnsumptin (surce energy), baseline year (MMBtu) B = Grss flr area f building space, baseline year (grss square feet/metres) C= Ttal building energy cnsumptin (surce energy), perfrmance year (MMBtu) D= Grss flr area f building space, perfrmance year (grss square feet/metres) Part 2 An institutin earns the maximum f 3 pints available fr Part 2 when its annual building energy cnsumptin is 90 percent r mre belw the minimum perfrmance threshld f 28 Btu per grss square ft (2.6 Btu per grss square metre) per degree day. Incremental pints are awarded based n the institutin s perfrmance belw the threshld. Fr example, an institutin whse annual building energy cnsumptin per grss square ft per degree day is 12.6 Btu (i.e. 45 percent belw the 28 Btu threshld) wuld earn 1.5 pints (half f the pints available fr Part 2). Scring fr Part 2 f this credit is based n a EUI-adjusted flr area figure that accunts fr significant differences in energy use intensity (EUI) between types f building space. STARS 2.0 Technical Manual 156 OP Energy

Cnditinal Required if end date f the baseline year/perid is 2004 r earlier: A brief descriptin f when and why the building energy cnsumptin baseline was adpted (e.g. in sustainability plans and plicies r in the cntext f ther reprting bligatins) STARS 2.0 Technical Manual 160 OP Energy

Measurement Timeframe Perfrmance Year Reprt the mst recent data available frm the three years prir t the anticipated date f submissin. Institutins may use the mst recent single year fr which data is available r an average frm thrughut the perid. Institutins may chse the annual start and end dates that wrk best with the data they have (e.g. fiscal r calendar year), as lng as data are reprted frm a cnsecutive 12-mnth (r 3-year) perid. Reprt degree day and building space figures frm the same time perid as that frm which energy cnsumptin data are drawn (e.g. the cnsecutive 12-mnth r 3-year perid that mst clsely verlaps with the building energy cnsumptin perfrmance perid). Institutins may use average building space frm thrughut the perid r a snapsht at a single representative pint during the perid. STARS 2.0 Technical Manual 161 OP Energy

Baseline Year Reprt data frm the baseline year, which may be: Any year frm 2005 t the present A baseline year, 1990 t 2004, that the institutin has adpted as part f its sustainability plans r plicies r in the cntext f ther reprting bligatins Recmmended best practices fr defining a baseline include: Using the average f three cnsecutive years t reduce the impact f utliers. Using the same baseline year fr multiple credits t reduce reprting requirements. Fr example, institutins using 2005 fr all STARS credits that are baseline-based wuld nly have t calculate baseline weighted campus user data nce. Ensuring that baseline and perfrmance year data are valid and reliable (e.g. that the data were gathered in the same manner) Institutins withut valid and reliable histrical data shuld use perfrmance year data fr bth the baseline and perfrmance year. Fllwing this apprach, an institutin wuld nt be able t claim pints during its first STARS submissin, but wuld be able t use its newly established baseline fr subsequent submissins. Institutins may chse the start and end dates that wrk best with the data they have (e.g. fiscal r calendar year), as lng as data are reprted frm a cnsecutive 12-mnth (r 3-year) perid. Reprt degree day and building space data frm the same perid as that frm which energy cnsumptin data are drawn (e.g. the cnsecutive 12-mnth r 3-year perid that mst clsely verlaps with the building energy cnsumptin baseline perid). Institutins may use average building space frm thrughut the perid r a snapsht at a single representative pint during the perid. Sampling and Data Standards Include all building energy cnsumptin. Reprting n a sample r subset f buildings is nt allwed fr this credit. In many cntexts, building energy cnsumptin will be a subset f ttal campus energy cnsumptin, e.g. as reprted in OP 9: Clean and Renewable Energy. Institutins that d nt meter building energy cnsumptin separately shuld reprt ttal campus energy cnsumptin. All reprted energy cnsumptin figures shuld be based n site energy (the amunt f energy cnsumed by campus buildings) rather than surce energy (the amunt f energy cnsumed n campus plus the energy used ff-site t generate and transprt the energy t the institutin). Surce energy will be calculated autmatically when the data listed under Sectin E: Reprting Fields is entered in the nline Reprting Tl. STARS 2.0 Technical Manual 162 OP Energy

Cnsistent with U.S. EPA s Prtfli Manager and available natinal standards, the fllwing surce-site ratis (i.e. primary energy factrs) may be reprted: Energy Surce Canada Eurpe Grid-purchased electricity U.S. and elsewhere 2.05 2.50 3.14 District steam/ht water 1.20 1.20 1.20 Institutins with mre accurate natinal, reginal r lcal ratis may reprt thse figures in lieu f the abve and shuld dcument the ratinale fr ding s in Ntes abut the submissin.
