Immerse yourself in experiential learning Spend the Summer in Madrid with the Coast Community College District (Orange Coast College) and ACCENT. Madrid becomes an extension of your classroom as you explore Spanish parks, monuments, churches and museums while attending Spanish Language classes with local or visiting faculty. Participants on the Summer in Madrid program live in student apartments or in homestays (with supplement) located throughout the city and have the opportunity to explore Spain with available optional three-day/two-night excursions to Barcelona and Granada/Seville/Cordoba. The ACCENT Madrid Study Center provides support and guidance to students on each of its programs. Once you have enrolled, you will receive more detailed application and enrollment forms as well as a student handbook. June 26 - August 1, 2015 Student Services: The ACCENT Centers ACCENT is an independent study abroad program provider with a multinational team of staff members who all have personal knowledge in study abroad. With more than 20 years of experience coordinating high-quality overseas study programs, ACCENT works in partnership with U.S. colleges and universities to develop academically challenging and culturally enriching overseas study experiences in Paris, Florence, London, Madrid, Rome and Istanbul. Each city is home to a fully staffed ACCENT Study Center that serves as a home base for program participants. The ACCENT San Francisco Center coordinates program enrollment and pre-departure preparation for students, helping to make their transition to living overseas as smooth as possible. The ACCENT Madrid Study Center is located in the Castilian neighborhood of Chamberi, near the city s financial district on Calle Miguel Angel. There are two classrooms in the Center, with the remaining classrooms located just next door within the facilities of the historic Instituto Internacional. Both buildings are just a short walk from shops, cinemas, restaurants, museums and libraries. The ACCENT Study Center, and the Instituto Internacional, provide a computer lab, student common area with adjacent garden, a cafeteria, a 70,000 volume library and student study area, as well as DSL and wireless connections for laptops. The ACCENT Study Center is open during the week for students to use the computers, resource and lending library, to ask questions and collect their mail. Program Requirements The Summer in Madrid program is open to anyone who is over 18 at the time of application. Program space is limited. Students should send in the enclosed application with the $250 non-refundable first payment as soon as possible. Upon receipt of your application and first payment, ACCENT and the Coast Community College District will send you additional application and enrollment forms. Applications must be received by April 17, 2015. Beyond April 17, limited enrollment is allowed when space permits.

Academic Curriculum Depending on Spanish language level, classes will be held either at the Don Quijote Language School in Madrid, or will be taught by visiting faculty at the Instituto Internacional next door to where the ACCENT Madrid Study Center is located. Spanish A180 - Elementary Spanish The focus is on development of elementary proficiency in listening, speaking, reading and writing in Spanish, with an introduction to cultures related to the Spanish language. This course is equivalent to two years of HS Spanish. May be taken for grades or on a pass-no pass basis. Transfer Credit: CSU; UC. Spanish A185 - Elementary Spanish Prerequisite: Spanish A180 or completion of two years of high school Spanish with a grade of C or better. Continuation of Spanish A180, with further development of listening, speaking, reading and writing proficiency, and additional exploration of cultures related to the Spanish language. This course is equivalent to three years of high school Spanish. May be taken for grades or on a pass-no pass basis. Transfer Credit: CSU; UC. Spanish A280 - Intermediate Spanish Prerequisite: Spanish A185. Continuation of Spanish A185, with further development of language skills at the intermediate level and exploration of cultures related to the Spanish language. Additional emphasis on reading and writing, with an introduction to selected literary works. May be taken for grades or on a pass-no pass basis. Transfer Credit: CSU; UC. Spanish A285 - Intermediate Spanish Prerequisite: Spanish A280 or A280H. Continuation of Spanish A280, with further refinement of language skills at the intermediate level and investigation of cultures related to the Spanish language in preparation for higher level specialized work. May be taken for grades or on a pass-no pass basis. Transfer Credit: CSU; UC. Program Faculty Jeff Brown is an assistant professor of Spanish at Orange Coast College. Mr. Brown is extremely passionate about Spanish and Spain. Mr. Brown holds a bachelor s degree from the University of California at Berkeley and while living in Madrid, Spain he received a Master s degree in Spanish from Universidad San Luis. He is quite familiar with the city and considers it his second home. For Mr. Brown, Madrid is the most exciting city in the world. There is no other city like it. Mr. Brown is also a linguist at heart. He speaks 6 languages, including Spanish, English, French, Italian, Mandarin Chinese and Vietnamese. He has studied them all and continues to practice them on a daily basis. Of course, Spanish, Spain, and teaching are his greatest passions. Program Timetable Application due: with first payment Final payment due: April 17 Pre-departure orientation: May (TBD) Departure from U.S.: June 25 Arrival in Madrid: June 26 Overseas orientation: June 27 Classes begin: June 29 Return to U.S.: August 1 Application Procedure The Summer in Madrid program is offered for transferable college credit through Orange Coast College, part of the Coast Community College District. The Coast Community College District will provide a transcript upon request for the coursework completed overseas. Please verify the transferability of courses with your advisor or registrar before you apply.

Program Price: $3825 plus a $100 refundable security deposit (The price is based on 20 or more program participants. If less than 20 students enroll in the program, the cost is subject to change.) Program Price Includes Double room in shared student apartment Pre-departure and overseas orientation program, with a practical walking tour of areas in Madrid around the ACCENT Madrid Center Overseas information and resource center with ACCENT Madrid on-site staff Transfers from and to the Spanish airport for group flight participants and those non-group flight participants able to meet the group transfer Program Price Does Not Include Round-trip airfare (estimated airfare $1700 - $1900) Coast Community College District tuition and fees (see description) Optional three-day, two-night excursions to Barcelona ($475), and Granada/Seville/ Cordoba ($450), excursions include transportation, guides, entries, and hotel accommodations (double/triple/quad rooms) with breakfast daily Optional supplement of $200 for a single room in an apartment Optional supplement of $600 for a double room in a homestay or $725 for a single room in a homestay, all homestays include breakfast and dinner daily Meals (except as described for homestays) Required CCCD medical insurance (see description) Personal expenses, books, passports, visas, and anything not listed as included Travel and personal property insurance Student Housing Students may choose to live in double or single rooms in shared student apartments or double or single rooms in a homestay. Single rooms in shared student apartments are limited and require a supplement of $200. Double rooms in a homestay require a supplement of $600 and single rooms in a homestay require a supplement of $725. All homestays include breakfast and dinner daily. Apartments and homestays are co-ed with single sex bedrooms and may be shared with other international students. Housing is provided from the first day of the program (June 26, 2015). Payment Schedule Non-refundable first payment $250 Final payment due April 17, 2015 $3675 The above breakdowns include the $100 refundable security deposit. The payment schedule is the applicant's contractual obligation. Failure to make payment when due shall automatically cancel participant from the program one week after payment due date. All payments are effective the day they are received by the ACCENT San Francisco Center. ACCENT, in its sole discretion, may reinstate an applicant subject to availability of space and late enrollment fees. ACCENT charges a $30 bounced check fee for each check received that is not promptly paid by your bank in the normal course of business. Transportation All participants must check-in at the ACCENT Madrid Center June 26, 2015 between 9am and 6pm (Note: most transatlantic flights depart one day before their arrival date). ACCENT will organize an optional round-trip group flight from Los Angeles. Airfare is not included in the program fee. Group flight participants and those non-group flight participants able to meet the group transfer will be met at the airport in Madrid and transferred to their housing. Group flight participants returning to the U.S. on the group return date will receive transportation to the Madrid airport. Participants on the Summer in Madrid program will receive detailed optional group flight information approximately four months prior to departure. Estimated airfare $1700- $1900. CCCD Tuition & Fees Academic credit for this program is awarded by Orange Coast College. A $46 per unit enrollment fee must be paid to the college at the time of registration. Nonresidents of California pay an additional $214 per unit. Fees are set by the State of California and are subject to change. Required Medical Insurance All program participants are required to purchase short-term outbound study abroad medical insurance through an approved District insurance provider. Program participants can find further information on the required study abroad medical insurance at http://www.cccd.edu/studyabroad/about.aspx. Program participants must purchase this study abroad medical insurance no less than 60 days prior to program departure. Failure to purchase the required study abroad medical insurance shall prevent student from participating in the study abroad program. Cancellations All cancellations must be made in writing to ACCENT and Jeff Brown at Orange Coast College and are effective the date of receipt by ACCENT. Participants are liable for payments until written cancellation is received. Cancellation Fees: 70 days or more prior to start of program $250 50 to 69 days prior to start of program $750 30 to 49 days prior to start of program $1000 15 to 29 days prior to start of program $1500 0 to 14 days prior to start of program No Refund ACCENT, and not the Coast Community College District, is responsible for all travel arrangements and any liability arising therefrom. The Coast Community College District is NOT liable for any damages arising out of the services described herein, including, but not limited to any promises or representations, whether expressed or implied. Nothing contained herein shall be construed to in any way bind the District, the District Governing Board, any of their agents, employees or representatives to any promises, obligations, covenants or duties whether expressed or implied herein. ACCENT is not responsible for the academic segment of the program except as specified in the contract between ACCENT and the Coast Community College District. Nor is ACCENT responsible for airline delays of any kind, or for expenses or loss incurred as a result of such delays. With regard to transportation/travel, regardless of the type of vehicle, ACCENT acts for the passenger as agent only.
