KARTHAUS-2011 ICE SHEETS AND GLACIERS IN THE CLIMATE SYSTEM Practical information Venue and housing The course will be held in Karthaus, which is a charming old village in the Schnalstal, about 20 km northwest of Merano, northern Italy.The logistic centre, where all meals will be served and where the crowd gathers in the evening, is hotel Goldene Rose, run by Paul Grüner. Some of the articiants will stay in this hotel, many will be housed in good-quality ensions within a 2- minute walk. All articiants should check in at Goldene Rose. Students will be asked to share double bedrooms. Change in Bolzano on a local train to Merano. Then take a direct bus to Karthaus (Schnalstal), or take the local train ( Vinscher Bahn ) to Naturns and then go on the bus to Karthaus (this connection is more frequent). Those coming by lane may fly to Innsbruck, Munich or Milano, take a train to Bolzano and roceed as described above. It is also ossible to fly to Verona or Bolzano, but flights are less frequent and more exensive. A timetable for the Merano Karthaus bus line (261) can be found below. Lecture room / rojects The lecture room is not far from the hotel (follow the crowd). There will be five Mac comuters in a network with a rinter. These comuters are meant for roject work, but can also be used by students to go on the internet, check email, etc [but roject work has riority!]. The number of keys for individual wifi use is very limited and in fact only available for teachers. Projects will be carried out in grous of three. The organising committee will distribute the students over the rojects. Only minor modifications can occasionally be made. Telling who you are We do not use badges for articiants. In the beginning of the course students are asked to summarise in a 5-min resentation who they are and what their roject is about. In this way we get to know each other quickly. The time limit is strict, so use no more than three illustrations (bring overheads or a USB stick). Excursion The excursion on Sunday will be a tri in high mountain terrain. The hike is not difficult, but requires solid hiking/mountain boots. Good clothing (including a hat), gloves and sun glasses are essential. Mountain equiment (cramons, roe, etc) is not needed.
