Who we are The Natural Resources Istitute (NRI) is a specialist istitute of the Uiversity of Greewich. We provide research, cosultacy, traiig ad advisory services to uderpi sustaiable developmet, ecoomic growth ad poverty reductio. The majority of our activities focus o the haressig of atural ad huma capital for the beefit of developig coutries, though much of our expertise has proved to be of growig relevace to idustrialized atios. The Istitute is located i Chatham, approximately oe hour from cetral Lodo, ad has over 60 professioal staff i disciplies ragig from athropology ad eterprise developmet to etomology ad food sciece. Specialist associates also work with us o specific programmes. NRI is registered by the British Stadards Istitute to ISO 9001. What we do Workig i partership with developmet agecies, we cotribute to pro-poor policy formulatio ad udertake research ad techical evaluatios that uderpi plaig ad ivestmet decisios. Through our practical experiece of idetifyig ad exploitig ecoomic opportuities for the poor i the atural resources sector, we have strog liks with private sector players ad the itermediary orgaizatios that represet them. Where we work NRI works globally, with a focus o coutries with less developed ecoomies i Africa, Asia ad Lati America. Selected programmes Makig agriculture work for the poor A overwhelmig umber of the world s poorest people are ivolved i farmig that does ot meet their basic food eeds or geerate eough icome to lift them out of poverty. NRI ad its etwork of parter orgaisatios throughout the world are workig to develop better agricultural techologies ad improved systems that will have a real impact i reducig poverty ad malutritio. Examples of our work iclude: Improved crop productio by smallholders through the developmet of improved farmig systems ad ew techologies; Supportig the productio of high value products by smallholder farmers; Developig better research ad advisory services for poor farmers that itegrate farmers ad cosumers kowledge with iput supply ad marketig iformatio. Food ad trade For decades, weakesses i post-productio food maagemet, eterprise developmet ad marketig have bee a major costrait to agricultural growth ad trade, ad its potetial to reduce poverty i developig coutries. Sice the early 1990s, the Natural Resources Istitute has played a leadig role i helpig to develop food marketig systems i collaboratio with local parters. Chage ad vulerability Today s world is oe of uprecedeted chage ad issues such as climate chage, globalisatio, coflict, emerget diseases ad major migratory pests ca all icrease vulerability ad threate the livelihood ad health of poor people. NRI is workig to uderstad, quatify ad mitigate these major challeges so as to help the world s poorest to withstad these potetially disastrous multiple threats.
