Division for Lifelong Learning (DLL) - Life is a Learning Journey DLL was established in 1999 to assist with UWC's on-going development of more flexible, convenient and socially relevant learning options, and to improve the facilities for all part-time students. At least 90% of our part-time students juggle work and studies. Lifelong Learning enables students to learn at different times, in different ways, for different purposes, at various stages of their lives and careers and to gain full accreditation for their efforts. The major pressures on time and money that full-time study requires are minimised through shorter periods of study and staggered payments. Thus studying part-time is one of the fastest-growing sectors of student admissions to tertiary education institutions in South Africa and the world. 3

FAQ s. What is meant by studying part-time? Frequenty asked questions about studying part-time What is meant by studying part-time? You can take longer to complete your qualifications. You will be able to choose the number of modules you can manage in consultation with the faculty. Payments are spread over a period of fixed amounts. When can I study part-time? You can study during the day with full-time students, committing to fewer modules, or after-hours which includes evenings, weekends or block sessions, in consultation with the faculty. Are all UWC programmes offered after hours? No. Most programmes are offered from 08h00 to 16h30 during week days. UWC offers flexible access to studying part-time UWC is an adult-friendly university, continually expanding the range of ways that students can access learning through part-time studies at flexible times. FAQ s. Length of studies? Admission requirements? How do I know what programme to choose? # # # What is your goal? Do you want a full qualification, a short course, other? What are your interests and abilities? What time do you have available? How long are the study programmes? UWC offers a variety of qualifications including certificates, diplomas and degrees part-time. Studying part-time will usually take longer than full-time studies. Students decide on their course load based on their other commitments and in consultation with faculty staff. Are part-time and full-time admission requirements the same? There are several possibilities. The conventional admission requirement for all first degree studies is a National Senior Certificate (2008), also known as Matriculation Exemption. However, subject to the discretionary approval of Senate, the university may waive the requirement of full exemption and admit a student with a School Leaving Certificate or even without a School Leaving Certificate if the applicant has relevant prior learning. 6

FAQ s. What is flexible access admissions? UWC has a flexible admissions system, and equitable selection procedures. These ensure that students from all sectors of the community have a fair chance to gain access to university. The following options are available: Senate Discretionary (SD) admission The usual requirement for admission to the university is a National Senior Certificate (2008) or matriculation with exemption. If you have a matric without exemption you can be assessed by the university to determine your potential to succeed and, based on these results, gain the discretionary approval of Senate to be admitted. Some courses require good symbols in certain matric subjects; contact the faculty of choice for information. Age exemption admission Potential students who have a National Senior Certificate and who will be 23 years or older during their first year of study, may qualify for admission to the university provided they adhere to certain conditions. Consult the Admissions Office for more details: +27 21 959-3900. Learners over 45 years of age can be admitted to the university without any formal entry requirements but we strongly advise the Portfolio Development Course for most applicants. FAQ s. Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)? How does RPL provide access to students without a Matric Certificate? The University Senate will consider granting access to students older than 23 without a Senior Certificate, but with relevant work experience or prior learning if the Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) application procedures have been followed. Do I have access with a Senior Certificate but no Matriculation Exemption? You may qualify for age exemption if you turn 23 before or during the first year of study. These are specified in the University Calendar. Please enquire at the Admissions Office. How does RPL relate to age exemption? Candidates who turn 45 before or during the first year of study may apply for full exemption and gain access without going through the formal RPL procedures. There is an administrative fee. 8

FAQ s. Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)? Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) Students who do not have formal qualifications to enter university, but are 23 years of age or older, can apply for admission by: # # writing tests of academic readiness, or attending a Portfolio Development Course. The academic readiness tests are written in October. The Portfolio Development Course is offered after hours over nine weeks. It involves attending five contact sessions and two mentoring sessions as candidates prepare their learning portfolio. The successful portfolio presents evidence that the student has attained the level required for entry although, in some cases, an additional entrance test may be prescribed, offered during May to September. The UWC faculties have in-depth knowledge about programmes on offer, entry requirements, subject choices, course content, course duration, costs and financial aid. Find the applicable contact details using the contents page. How do I submit my 2015 application? The preferred application is online www.uwc.ac.za which is open 24 hours a day. If you do not meet the entry requirements, contact the faculties to find out if you qualify for access through: age exemption, Senate Discretionary (SD) access or Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL). 10

Please note: Foreign applicants must pay the foreign equivalent of the application fee plus bank charges. Application fees are non-refundable. What do I need to complete my application? # # # ID or passport number and matric results or results of an equivalent qualification. If you do not have an exemption, tick the Senate Discretionary admission box. If you do not have a matric or equivalent qualification, tick the RPL box. How can I check my application status? FAQ s. Application and registration? How will I know whether my application is successful? If your application is successful you will get an official acceptance letter from the university, issued by the Department of Student Administration. When can I register? Registration starts in the second week of January 2015. You can register once you have received the official university acceptance letter. What must I bring to successfully complete my registration? # # # # The official university acceptance letter. A certified copy of your National Senior Certificate (2008) or the Official Advice / Statement of Results issued by your Provincial Education authority. This does not apply to RPL candidates. Your Identity Document or a certified copy of it. The registration fee and the first instalment of your course fees or proof of payment into the UWC bank account. 12

FAQ s. Costs of studying? How much does it cost to study? Fees for part-time students are calculated according to the number of modules chosen. Consult the UWC fees booklet available towards the end of the year at the Student Accounts Department: 021 959-3108. Alternatively open www.uwc.ac.za and click on 'prospective students' and then 'fees'. Registration payment An initial payment of R3 900 for all students is payable on registration. On average part-time students pay 75% of the full-time fee. Part-time fees are calculated according to the number of modules. Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) applicants Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) applicants are required to pay an additional R410 for the Matriculation Exemption application. 13

Undergraduate and postgraduate studies What does the term 'undergraduate' mean? The term 'undergraduate' refers to students who are studying for a first degree. What does the term 'postgraduate' mean? The term 'postgraduate' refers to students who have completed their first degree and are studying towards a higher qualification such as a master's degree. Undergraduate and postgraduate part-time studies Part-time students can study during the day or after hours. The University of the Western Cape (UWC) has seven faculties or general fields of academic study and research. Within these faculties, the departments, schools, institutions and units focus the study area further. All offer a wealth of degree, diploma and certificate courses to part-time students. All courses are fully accredited. This prospectus lists after-hours part-time courses by faculty and gives you the contact person and number information. Single modules are possible in some faculties; however these may not receive study credits. 14

Undergraduate admissions criteria Undergraduate admissions criteria for first-time students in 2015 The usual requirements for admission to the University are the National Senior Certificate (2008 and beyond) or Matriculation Exemption (prior to 2008). The minimum admission requirement is a National Senior Certificate (NSC) with an achievement rating of 4 (Adequate achievement, 50-59%) or more in four subjects chosen from the recognised 20-credit NSC subjects known as the 'designated subject list'. For those students who do not meet these requirements, there are other options (see pages 7-9: Flexible access admissions). Not all undergraduate qualifications can be studied after hours. The undergraduate degree courses in the Community and Health Sciences, Dentistry, Law, and Sciences faculties are only offered during the day. Part-time students may attend day slots if their work commitment allows it. Some courses are offered during weekends and in blocks at negotiated times. Some are web-based and can be accessed from off campus. Most postgraduate qualifications can be studied full-time or part-time. 16

Division for Lifelong Learning: the Lifelong Learning Awards The Lifelong Learning Awards are presented each year to inspirational students who have entered via alternative access, are older or part-time students. An award is also given to a deserving unit on campus which supports the lifelong learning mission. The awards demonstrate UWC's on-going commitment to making lifelong learning a reality for thousands of people who would not otherwise be able to access higher education. Division for Lifelong Learning: the Lifelong Learning Awards High achievers and role-models are awarded the Lifelong Learning Awards annually. Calls for nominations are advertised on the campus, the website and through emails. Three members of the Senate Lifelong Learning Committee (SLLC) short-list the candidates. They make recommendations to the Rector, who makes the final decisions. The Lifelong Learning Awards are presented by the Vice-Chancellor during the Graduation Ceremony. The Division for Lifelong Learning (DLL) acts as the secretariat for the awards. Continuing Education Continuing Education (CE) courses have a broad scope. They provide on-going professional training in the corporate and government sectors, specific needs courses for community-based organisations, individual courses aimed at giving access to currently employed or unemployed people always with the aim of developing the knowledge and skills required to participate effectively in society and in the changing economy. Continuing Education courses can be arranged during the year at various venues. Some are credit-bearing against existing qualifications. Others are non-credit-bearing or may carry Continuing Professional Development (CPD) points if accredited by a professional association. The University welcomes partnerships with the public and private sector with the aim of creating customised learning programmes that benefit organisations and individuals whilst enhancing motivation and productivity. The Policy for Quality Assurance was approved in 2006 to ensure quality procedures and practices at UWC and a register of Continuing Education courses of eight hours or longer. 26

Postgraduate Studies Postgraduate studies are normally further studies in a major subject area or subdiscipline of an undergraduate programme. Some postgraduate programmes are interdisciplinary programmes with particular professional outcomes and have specific requirements. The University of the Western Cape offers honours, masters, doctoral, diploma and certificate programmes at postgraduate level. The conventional admission requirement for postgraduate diplomas or certificates is a bachelor's degree or M=3 qualification and at least three years relevant prior learning that the faculty concerned may consider to be equivalent to a bachelor's degree. It includes: Student Development, Student Academic Support, Psychological Services and Students-with-Disabilities. The Centre is staffed by professionals who are registered with national bodies. It conducts research and engages with national issues and debates to provide a cutting edge service to meet students' development needs. These include training and walk-in facilities. There are smaller laboratories in some departments as well as larger ones, such as the Thintana Computer Lab, located on central campus. The majority of these laboratories operate with Windows-based programmes, however Open Source programmes are being incorporated 55

Consultants are trained to provide assistance to undergraduate student with the demands of academic writing. The UWC Writing Centre is staffed by peer writing tutors who work with undergraduate students on their academic writing tasks. They guide, advise and support student writers, with the aim of developing their skills and confidence. They also provide support to academic staff as they work with their own student writers.
