3 Faculty of ECONOMICAL AND MANAGEMENT SCIENCES Introduction The objective of the Faculty of Economical and Management Sciences is to train students to develop into professional persons and business leaders who can add value to the South African and global economy by means of their expertise, innovation and enterprise mind-set. This faculty comprises four (4) schools and each represents a specific field of study or subject discipline. School of Economics (Economics, International Trade, Risk Management and Investment Management, Agricultural Economics and Risk Management); School of Human Resource Sciences (Human Resource Management, Industrial Psychology and Labour Relations Management); School of Accounting Sciences (Chartered Accountancy, Management Accountancy, Financial Accountancy, Forensic Accountancy); and School of Business Management (Entrepreneurship, Marketing Management and Tourism Management). Qualifications and fields of study In the Faculty of Economical and Management Sciences the following qualifications are presented: Baccalaureus Commercii (BCom) Marketing Management (Program code for application form: : E354P) The program focuses on the training of marketers in the corporate world as well as in medium to small enterprises. The main elements of marketing include logistics management, marketing plan, price decisions, consumer decisions, financial management, trademark decisions, marketing communication and product development. Mathematics level 3 (40-49%); and A minimum APS-score of 24. : The most important subjects include Business Management, Logistics Management, Marketing Plan, Price Decisions, Consumer Behaviour, Financial Management, Production Decisions, Marketing Communication, Marketing Research and Services Marketing, International Trade and Economics. Various career opportunities such as marketing manager,

4 production manager, trademark manager, market analyst, marketing consultant, marketing researcher, customer service manager and sales consultant exist. The program is presented full-time and covers a period of three (3) years. The pregraduate program grants admission to an honors program if certain prerequisites are met. On completion of the honors degree, further postgraduate studies on masters of doctoral level may be followed. Entrepreneurship and Business Management (Program code for application form: : E350P) The program is aimed at the development of management knowledge and skills in order to effectively be promoted to a managerial post and also to become an entrepreneur. Students will learn how to draw up a business plan by integrating important concepts from Business Management and Economics. Mathematics level 3 (40-49%); and A minimum APS-score of 24. The most important subjects include Business Management, Marketing Management, Financial Management, Entrepreneurship, Marketing Research, Strategic Management and Labour Relations. A person with this degree will be able to be promoted to general manager of a business, as well as a logistics manager, operational manager, marketing manager and labour relations manager and can also start his/her own business. The program is presented full-time and covers a period of (3) years. The program grants admission to postgraduate study for an Honors BCom degree (Marketing and Entrepreneurship). Tourism Management (Program code for application form: : E355P) The program focuses on the training of tourism managers with a profound substructure in Economics. Students are scientifically trained in subject disciplines such as

5 Tourism Management, Game Ranch Management, Ecotourism, Guesthouse Management, Food Service Management, Tourism Marketing and Tourism Planning, Entrepreneurship and Business Management. Mathematics level 3 (40-49%); and A minimum APS-score of 24. The most important subjects in the program include Tourism Management, Business Management, International Trade and Economics. Students who have completed this program will be trained for a variety of careers in the tourism industry such as guesthouse manager, game ranch manager, resort manager, tourism marketer and entrepreneur (e.g. tour operator). The program is presented full-time and covers a period of three (3) years. Completion of the program grants admission to honors study in Tourism Management or Economics.

6 Mathematics level 3 (40-49%); and A minimum APS-score of 24. The most important subjects in the program include Tourism Management, Recreation Sciences and Business Management. Students who complete this program will be trained for a variety of careers in the tourism and recreation industries such as guesthouse manager, game ranch manager, resort manager, tourism marketer and entrepreneur (e.g. tour operator), information manager and conference organiser as well as recreation manager. Tourism Management and Recreation Science (Program code for application form: : E356P) This program focuses on the training of tourism managers with a profound substructure in Recreation Science. The student will be scientifically trained in subject fields such as Tourism Management, Ecotourism, Game Ranch Management, Tourism Marketing and Tourism Planning, Guesthouse Management, Food Service Management, Entrepreneurship, Recreation Sciences and Business Management. The program is presented full-time and covers a period of three (3) years. Completion of the program grants admission to honors studies in Tourism Management and Recreation Science. Marketing and Tourism Management (Program code for application form: : E357P) Educational interpreting in English This program focuses on the training of a tourism manager with a profound substructure in Marketing Management. The student is scientifically trained in fields of study such as Tourism

7 Management, Ecotourism, Game Ranch Management, Tourism Marketing and Tourism Planning, Guesthouse Management, Entrepreneurship, Marketing Management and Business Management. Mathematics level 3 (40-49%); and A minimum APS-score of 24. The most important subjects in the program include Tourism Management, Business Management, Marketing Management and Marketing Research. Career opportunities Students who complete this program will be trained for a variety of careers in the tourism industry as well as careers that focus on marketing such as marketing consultants, tourism marketing managers and marketing managers. The program is presented full-time and covers a period of three (3) years. Admission to postgraduate studies Completion of the program grants admission to honors studies in Tourism Management or Entrepreneurship and Marketing. Communication Management (Program code for application form: : E353P) This program focuses on training in communication studies with a profound substructure in Tourism Management or Business Management. Various options are available in communication studies, including corporate communication, journalism and media. Students must make a choice between Tourism Management and Business Management. A minimum APS-score of 24; Mathematics level 3 (40-49%); and Selection applies and only a limited number of students can be admitted.

8 The most important subjects in the program include Communication, Tourism Management or Business Management and Marketing Management. Career opportunities Students who complete this program will be trained for a variety of careers in the tourism industry such as guesthouse manager, game ranch manager, resort manager, tourism marketer and entrepreneur(e.g. a tour operator), as well as careers within the communication field such as journalism, corporate media and video. The business management option presents opportunities to become a business manager, marketer as well as an entrepreneur. The program is presented full-time and covers a period of three (3) years. Completion of the program grants admission to honors studies in Tourism Management or Entrepreneurship and Marketing or Communication Studies. The honors degree in Communication Studies that follows this degree is known as Honors BA Communication Studies (admission subject to selection). Financial Accountancy (Program code for application form: : E372P) This program focuses on the training of financial accountants and is especially aimed at the acquisition of membership from the South African Institute of Professional Accountants (SAIPA). Membership of SAIPA enables the member to become a professional practising accountant working in his/her own practice or to work as a professional accountant in the trade and industry. A minimum APS-score of 28; Mathematics level 4 (50%-59%); and A selection test may be given. The most important subjects in the program include Financial Accounting and Management Accounting with Taxation, Commercial Law and Auditing as the most important supportive subjects. The qualified SAIPA accountant can practise as a professional accountant who renders the following services: complete bookkeeping, secretarial, taxation and accounting services. SAIPAs can also work in the trade and industry as accountants,

9 internal auditors, management accountants or financial managers. SAIPA is a member of IFAC (International Federation of Accountants) and has various collaboration agreements with professional corporations abroad that can open doors for international opportunities for the South African SAIPA. The BCom Financial Accountancy program is presented fulltime and covers a period of three (3) years which is followed by practical training for another three (3) years at a registered accountant. During the practical training period the apprentice SAIPA accountant will be regularly monitored and a final professional evaluation needs to be completed at the end of the three year period. For SAIPA members who are interested in the trade and industry, the opportunity is given to complete practical training at accredited enterprises in the trade and industry. After applicable experience of six years it is expected of the trade and industry candidate to complete the professional evaluation in order to qualify as a SAIPA member. If certain prerequisites are met the pregraduate program grants admission to the honors degree in Financial Accountancy with Financial Accounting, Taxation and Financial Management as core subjects. On completion of the honors degree further postgraduate studies on master or doctoral level may be followed. Management Accountancy (Program code for application form: : E373P) The program focuses on the training of management accountants. Students are scientifically trained in subject fields such as Management Accounting, Financial Accounting, Financial Management, Taxation and Computer Applications that are integrated as prescribed by the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants/CIMA) in London, England. The program is composed of the subjects Management Accounting, Financial Accounting, Financial Management, Taxation, Computer Applications, Auditing, Commercial Law, Business Management and Economics.

10 professional institute (CIMA) in London can be completed if all academic prerequisites are met. The program grants admission to postgraduate study in the Honors BCom degree (Management Accountancy) and also to Honors BCom in Financial Accounting. On completion of the honors degree further studies on masters and doctoral level may be followed. Visit the CIMA website at Chartered Accountancy (Program code for application form: : E371P) Educational interpreting in English Graduandi who completed this program will be trained for a variety of careers in the financial, commercial and industrial sectors. Exemption of a certain number of question papers at the Chartered Institute for Management Accountants is granted with regard to international and professional qualification as Chartered Management Accountant. The program is presented full-time and covers a period of three (3) years, followed by practical training for another three (3) years at an suitable organisation after which registration at the The program focuses on the training of accountants to write the national exams for qualification as Chartered Accountant (CA (SA)) at the South African Institute of Chartered Accountants (SAICA). Accounting, Management Accounting, Taxation and Auditing form the core of this program. 11 This program contains the major subjects Accounting, Auditing, Taxation and Management Accounting, as well as supportive subjects that enable the student to meet all the critical outcomes: Accounting and Computers, Business Management, Economics, Commercial Law, Human Resource Management, Mathematics, Statistics, Communication Skills, Academic Literacy and Professional Ethics. Graduandi who completes the program (up unto honors level) will be allowed to write the qualifying exams for becoming Chartered Accountants (CA(SA)). The title CA (SA) is presently the only one which allows a person to practise as an independent auditor if the person is registered at the Independent Regulatory Board for Auditors (IRBA). Other opportunities for specialisation are includes positions as international accountant, position specialist, taxation consultant, management consultant, financial manager and computer auditor. Visit the SAICA website at Manner of presentation and duration of the program The BCom CA(SA) is presented full-time and covers a period of three (3) years. For a Chartered Accountant (SA) it includes this degree with a year s honors training thereafter. On successful completion students may write the qualifying exams of SAICA. Apprenticeship covers a period of three (3) years should the degree be obtained and can be done at an auditors firm or accredited companies in the trade and industry. On completion of the honors degree further postgraduate studies on masters and doctoral level may be followed. Forensic Accountancy (Program code for application form: : E370P) The degree BCom Forensic Accountancy is practiced oriented and developed for prospective students who want to directly focus on and specialise in forensic accountancy after school. The objective of the program is to equip students with the necessary knowledge and skills on which they can build in practice in order to become outstanding investigators of commercial crimes. Today it is widely known that there is an increasing demand for forensic accountants in the commercial trade crime environment. The reasons given for this increasing demand mainly includes the following: Significant corporate scandals such as Enron, Parmalat, Leisurenet and so forth made the corporate world once again aware of the role and responsibilities of an auditor. It is as if the traditional role of watchdog needs to be supplemented by that of bloodhound.

12 Businesses want to primarily prevent fraud and commercial crimes, but when it occurs it needs to be handled fast and cost effective. Increasing fraud and corruption in the private and public sectors; Increase in globalisation and world trade that leads to complex company structures and transactions; and Increase in the use as well as sophistication of technology in the corporate world. ICFP: The Institute for Commercial Forensic Practitioners was founded in May 2010 to regulate forensic accountancy prerequisites Forensic accountants can be part of: Large companies own internal forensic sections; Government bodies divisions for the investigation of commercial crimes; Forensic sections of auditor firms; or Private practice. In essence the forensic accountant must have adequate skills in accounting, law and investigation in order to render a service that will meet the need of so-called bloodhounds in the financial world. A minimum APS-score of 36; Mathematics level 5 (60%-69%); Language prerequisite: Level 5 (60-69%);

13 Students who did not have Accounting as school subject can send an to the following address for more information and advice: Applications for conditional admission will be considered; and A selection test may be written. The major subjects for this BCom degree include Accounting, Auditing, law subjects and a forensic subject. The forensic subject covers aspects such as investigation methodology, types of commercial crimes as well as the prevention and tracing thereof, applicable criminological and ethical expert testifying skills and other diverse aspects concerning the manipulation of financial statements. The program is presented full-time on the Potchefstroom campus and covers a period of three (3) years. The BCom in Forensic Accountancy grants admission to an honors degree for one (1) year (Honors BCom Forensic Accountancy) if certain admission requirements are met. The degree as well as the honors degree is presented full-time on the Potchefstroom campus of the North-West University; and The MCom in Forensic Accountancy is presented part-time and covers a period of two (2) years. Minimum prerequisites for admission include an Honors BCom in Forensic Accountancy as well as a selection prerequisite with specific reference to, amongst others, experience in the investigation of commercial crimes. The MCom in Forensic Accountancy requires the submission of a research thesis. Accounting and Informatics (Program code for application form: : E374P) The program focuses on the training of computer experts with background knowledge of accounting and taxations. In these days of extreme technological advancement, the training of computer experts is of utmost importance. A minimum APS-score of 28; Mathematics level 4 (50-59%). 14 grants admission to the honors degree in Information Systems, Accounting or Management Accounting, with Information Systems, Accounting, Taxation, Financial Management and Management Accounting as key subjects. On completion of the honors degree further postgraduate studies on magister- or doctoral level may be followed. Human Resource Management (Program code for application form: : E361P) Educational interpreting into English The most important subjects in the program include Accounting, Compute Information Systems and Management Accounting, with Taxation as an important supportive subject. Successful completion of the program can lead to employment in the trade and industry sector as programmer, system developer, accountant, financial manager or management accountant. The program for Accounting and Informatics is presented full-time and covers a period of three (3) years. If certain prerequisites are met, the pregraduate program The objective of the program is to train the student to investigate and handle human resource managerial, industrial economical and industrial psychological phenomenon in the work context in order to ensure individual, group, organisation and enterprise effectiveness. A minimum APS-score of 24; and Mathematics level 3 (40%-49%). Industrial Psychology, Labour Relations, Business Management (Financial Accounting [Special], Statistics, Labour Law and Economics are not major subjects). Registration as a personnel practitioner at the South African

15 Board for Personnel Practice (SABPP) if other practical prerequisites are met; Training official; Personnel-/human resource official; Personnel-/human resource manager; Personnel-/human resource consultant; Labour relations official; Complaint investigation official; Labour relations consultant; and Labour reporter. The program is presented full-time and covers a period of three (3) years. The degree opens the possibility of admission to the Honors BCom (Human Resource Management) and the Honors BCom (Labour Relations) degrees. Applicants are subject to a selection process. Industrial Psychology and Labour Relations Management (Program code for application form: : E360P) To train students to be able to identify, investigate and handle labour relational, industrial psychological and psychosocial phenomenon in the work context in order to ensure individual, group and organisation effectiveness. Professional registration: Industrial Psychology and Labour Relations First year HRM students can register at the South African Board for People Practices in the category HRM candidate. As the student advances in studies and experience, he/she can register in higher categories. For information visit the website co.za. Registration is recommended because potential employers get an immediate idea of the applicant s potential based on the registration category. Industrial Psychology 1. On completion of the honors studies, students can apply to write the psychometrist exam at the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA). Should the student pass the exam, he/she can register as a psychometrist. 2. Note: Only students who continues with a masters degree in Industrial Psychology and complete it successfully may apply for the board exam of the Health Professions Council in order to register as an industrial psychologist. A minimum APS-score of 24; and Mathematics level 3 (40%-49%). The most important subjects in the program include Industrial Psychology, Psychology and Labour Relations (Business Management, Financial Accounting [Special], Statistics and Economics are not major subjects).

17 Economics and International Trade (Program code for application form: : E340P) Educational interpreting into English The objective of this program is to make students conversant with different aspects of the economy as well as the international trade environment. Mathematics level 4 (50%-59%); and A minimum APS-score of 24. The most important subjects in the program include Economics, Business Management, International Trade and Financing, as well as International Business Communication and a choice between Risk Management, Business German or Business French. Graduandi who has completed this program will be trained for a variety of careers in government as well as private sectors in the position of an economist, economical advisor, the import/export industry and the enterprise and risk management environments. The program is presented full-time and covers a period of three (3) years. Depending on pregraduate achievement, the program grants admission to postgraduate study for an Honors BCom (International Trade) or Honors BCom (Economics) degree. Economics and Risk Management (Program code for application form: : E341P) The objective of the program is to train students for a variety of careers in economy and risk management in the financial world. The student is exposed to avariety of subject fields such as Economics, Corporate Financing, Risk Management, Financial Markets, International Trade, Business Management as well as Accounting. Mathematics level 4 (50%-59%) A minimum APS-score of 28. The most important subjects in the program include Economics, International Trade and Financing and Risk Management (including Introductory Risk Management, Corporate Financing, Bank Risk Management and Financial Markets), Business Management and Accounting.

18 On successful completion of the program careers in the following fields can be pursued: bank management, financial risk management, corporate treasury, city/town treasury, fund management, asset management, money market, capital market and trade in derivatives as well as a career as economist, economical advisor, financial consultant or broker in different markets (like share broker). The program is presented full-time and covers a period of three (3) years. Depending on pregraduate achievement the program may grant admission to postgraduate study for the degrees Honors BCom (Economics) of Honors BCom (Risk Management). Economics, Risk and Investment Management (Program code for application form: : E342P) The objective of the program is to train students for a variety of careers in quantitative risk management in especially the financial world, but also the economical world. This is accomplished by exposure to subjects such as Economics, Risk Management, Corporate Financing, Financial Markets, Statistics, Mathematics and Accounting. Mathematics level 5 (60%-69%); and A minimum APS-score of 28. The most important subjects in the program include Economics, Risk Management (Introduction to Risk Management, Corporate Financing, Bank Risk Management and Financial Markets), Statistics, Mathematics and Accounting. If the program is completed successfully, any of the following careers can be followed:

19 Share broker, bank management, financial risk manager, corporate treasurer, city/town treasurer, fund manager, asset manager, money market, capital mark and derivative trader, economist, economical advisor, financial consultant, risk management, risk analyst, specialist in derivatives and specialist in structured financing. The program is presented full-time and covers a period of three (3) years. The program grants admission, depending on pregraduate achievement, to postgraduate study for the Honors BCom (Economics) or Honors BCom (Risk Management) degrees. Agricultural Economics and Risk Management (Program code for application form: : E301P) Aim of the programme The aim of the programme is to train students to apply Economics and Risk Management within the agricultural environment. The focus is on agricultural business, the financial markets and derivative instruments. The student obtains exposure to a variety of subject areas such as Economics (Macro, Micro, Policy and Analysis), Risk Management (Asset Management, financial markets and derivative instruments) as well as specific agricultural economics modules. University admission Mathematics level 4 (50%- 59%) An APS score of 28. Agri-banker, Agricultural business manager, advisor, consultant, hedging (JSE and SAFEX), marketing, insurance and asset management. Method of presentation and duration of the programme The programme is a three (3) year, full-time course. Depending on undergraduate achievement, the programme may grant admission to postgraduate study for the degrees Honours BCom (Economics) and Honours BCom (Risk Management).

20 Economics and Informatics (Program code for application form: : E343P) The objective of the program is to deliver students who can apply the fields of Computer, Economics, International Trade as well as Risk Management and Financial Markets integrated in their capacity as business analysts. The student can thus apply computer skills to the world of commerce. Fields of study in which the student are trained include Economics, Informatics (or Computer Science), International Trade, Risk Management, as well as some facets of Accounting and Management. Mathematics level 4 (50%-59%); and A minimum APS-score of 28. The most important subjects in the program include Informatics (Computer Science), Economics, Risk Management, Financial Markets and International Trade and Financing. The program is presented full-time and covers a period of (3) years.
