Lync to the rest of the world Lync features several great features for connecting effectively with your clients and partners outside your organisation. Federation extends the communications capabilities of Lync Server 2010 over the Internet to customers, suppliers, partners, and others. Public IM Connectivity allows Lync to connect to other Lync users and with public IM service providers such as Microsoft Windows Live Messenger. Once enabled, users from one organization can add users at another to contact lists, send them instant messages, and see their presence information. Users can choose the best way to communicate for the task at hand voice, video, and more and can easily escalate person-to-person sessions to multi-person conferences. Lync also provides a public gateway for hosting conference calls with external as well as internal parties. Lync provides access to the voice conference and shared presentation or whiteboard space via a simple webgui available to any Internet-connected user. To secure and control all public-facing operations, Lync uses an Edge server that provides the contact point for external users. This means that users can securely connect to Lync without needing access to the main Lync server itself. It also allows internal users to remain securely connected to Lync even when they are out of the office and unable to VPN into the office or the hosting facility.
