NEWT Managed PBX A Secure VoIP Architecture Providing Carrier Grade Service This document describes the benefits of the NEWT Digital PBX solution with respect to features, hardware partners, architecture, Quality of Service (QoS), security and management. NEWT Managed PBX Hybrid Architecture The NEWT Managed PBX combines the strengths of both hosted phone systems and traditional on- premise private branch exchanges (PBXs), delivering a superior solution supporting an industry leading set of business class features such as facilitating tele- workers. These features are distributed between a local PBX system and a redundant network hosted infrastructure. The majority of PBX- centric features are provided locally, while hosting the more critical ones within the core of the Fibernetics network. Fibernetics unique hybrid concept decentralizes control, providing advanced scalability and availability, while enabling our customers to manage extensions, voice mail, auto attendant and other features via a GUI interface from their premise. Since the NEWT Solution is fundamentally based upon Asterisk, an open software platform, our customers benefit from a development ecosystem that continually evolves and improves that software. Scalability Our team of developers has extracted key functions from Asterisk, such as voic , Automatic Call Distribution (ACD), conference bridging and many others, to deliver superior scalability. These key functions have been distributed across multiple servers in the core of the Fibernetics network that are referred to as aggregators. Aggregators balance processing needs on an application by application basis, providing a multidimensional scaling opportunity based on standard capacity planning processes. The voice switching network that supports the NEWT Managed PBX is considered to be within the top 5 largest voice switching networks in Canada. The NEWT Managed PBX platform leverages that current network capacity, along with the existing aggregator infrastructure, to potentially support over 10,000 end PBXs, enabling an estimated 100,000 to 200,000 end user phone connections. As this estimated limit is approached, the simple addition of more aggregators will push capacity limits even higher.

Conference Bridge services are located within the core of the network. This allows for a large number of participants compared to traditional PBX bridge mechanisms, since they rely on local business lines to support participants external to the business. In that environment, each external participant would consume a business line to the customer premise. In the NEWT Managed PBX s environment, bridging in the core does not consume local voice line capacity unless the participant is at the customer site, optimizing scalability. Fault Tolerance As a benefit of the NEWT Managed PBX Hybrid Architecture, the solution provides superior fault tolerance. Most servers within the core network are engineered fault tolerant, with multiple power supplies and redundant network connectivity such that no single point of failure exists. Since key functions of the system are distributed across multiple aggregators, in the improbable event of any one failure, the NEWT NEWT Disaster Insurance Managed PBX can seamlessly connect to a redundant server within the hosted core. In the event of most customer specific/local issues, such as loss of connectivity or power, which would take a traditional PBX offline, the NEWT Managed PBX features that are hosted on this redundant core infrastructure continue to operate normally. As an example, Voic continues to record caller messages as it's hosted in the core. These messages can then be ed to end users ensuring they are always connected. The Automated Attendant service is also hosted within the core voice network. This service controls all customer specific call routing, either simple or complex. Entries can be made to provide for offline phone numbers, enabling automatic call redirection during local failures. This is transparent to the caller, and allows for always on voice service; inbound calls are guaranteed to be received whether the PBX is operational or not. The NEWT ACD leverages the above call flows to ensure that inbound calls to the Call Centre are always routed to Call Agents, either via their primary work extension or a backup residential or cellular number, ensuring that this vital component of a business remains operational at all times.

The NEWT Console, a browser- based application providing call control, extension management, and staff visibility, is also hosted within the core. It is designed to partner with desktop phones to enhance user productivity with features such as click to dial, single touch transfers, extension status monitoring, parked call management and visual voic . PBX- centric business features such as 3- way calling, Call Transfers, Call Recording (up to 40 concurrent calls on our medium platform), Call Parking, and others remain optimally provided via the local on premise NEWT Managed PBX. A complete list of features is available here.

NEWT Managed PBX Components NEWT Managed PBX has partnered with best in class technology hardware manufacturers, such as Cisco and Polycom, to deliver an industry leading, robust, complete telephony solution to our customers. NEWT Managed PBX Hardware We have numerous PBX hardware platforms, purpose- built to scale from a few business telephone lines to much larger enterprise environments supporting dozens of concurrent calls, and thus offering maximum scalability and cost effectiveness to businesses of all sizes. The small to medium- sized PBX offerings are built upon a hardened Linux- based dual Intel core platform with no moving parts, providing for highly energy efficient, reliable and silent operation. The NEWT Managed PBX is green, using less than half the amount of electricity required to operate a 60W lightbulb. Our enterprise PBX solution is built from a 19" rack mountable enterprise grade server platform. NEWT Managed PBX Telephony Hardware NEWT Managed PBX has partnered with Polycom, a market leader in the IP Phone space, and thus, offers a wide range of enterprise grade wired and wireless phone solutions. These address a diverse range of business needs. The SoundPoint IP Series provides for a broad range of phone sets; from a 2- Line entry level phone, all the way to a colour screen Gigabit Ethernet compatible 6- line professional office phone. Attendant phones with expansion module support offer the ability to monitor extensions and provide single touch call control. The NEWT Managed PBX also supports a full range of IP Conference phones for small to large boardrooms. With support for expansion microphones, this ensures coverage in even the largest of boardrooms. Our portable phone solution uses virtually noiseless DECT wireless technology. It can be deployed as a single wireless base station and a series of phones, or as a multiple cell solution ensuring seamless roaming capability within a customer environment. Analog support for a simple cordless handset, or existing analog- based conference phone, can be accomplished with the addition of an Analog Telephone Adapter (ATA).

NEWT Managed PBX Network Environment Quality Of Service To offer a high quality Voice over IP (VoIP) solution, the underlying network must provide reliable end- to- end connectivity. This connectivity must ensure that voice traffic is not only delivered, but done so without undue delay (latency) or inconsistent inter- packet time differences (jitter). NEWT Managed PBX voice traffic traverses Fibernetics core network and a customer premise Fibernetics managed LAN allowing us to achieve predictable QoS on an end to end basis. Business Line Scalability The NEWT Managed PBX is highly voice bandwidth efficient, being able to carry over 20 active calls on a single megabit of access bandwidth. For our customers this equates to up to three times the concurrent PSTN call capacity, versus a traditional IP- PBX using a common voice codec such as g.711, when utilizing the same sized voice connection. Customer Premise Network Hardware The NEWT Managed PBX requires managed Ethernet switch hardware with the following features: LAN speeds up to Gigabit Ethernet to accommodate today's demand for faster local connectivity; Power over Ethernet (PoE) that allows for network connectivity and power over the same cable, eliminating the need for a power adapter and outlet by each phone; Support for both a phone and workstation via a single Ethernet connection, as our IP desktop phones include a built- in 2- port Ethernet switch; Configuration to allow plug and play capability, automatically sensing and prioritizing voice and data packets, ensuring traffic separation and QoS within the LAN environment. The NEWT Managed PBX includes a managed business grade router from Cisco. This device acts as the primary gateway from and to the customer network. In conjunction with the Ethernet switch, it is responsible for prioritizing the customer premise outbound voice traffic to the core voice network.

NEWT Managed PBX Security Each NEWT Managed PBX connects to the core network via a highly secure RSA key based Virtual Private Network (VPN). These RSA keys are generated when the PBX is provisioned, and are not transmitted over any network. Only the NEWT team is equipped with the tools to create valid PBX keys. Using an automated central monitoring system with intrusion detection, the system is actively monitored for attempted security breaches or abnormal behavior. In the event that a cloned PBX attempts to connect to the core network, the NEWT Managed PBX system will detect this condition and promptly address it. Fibernetics core infrastructure is secure from the public Internet. Any required access from the public infrastructure requires highly secure RSA key pairs for authentication. Client PBXs communicate with our core infrastructure via their respective secure VPN tunnels, never from an unsecure public Internet connection. The NEWT Managed PBX employs strict firewall policies on each customer PBX element and our core network devices to prevent unauthorized access. Protection is further extended by limiting the amount of core resources consumed by each client PBX. Active alerting is implemented to provide notifications when abnormal events occur. These alerts and other controls are used to proactively identify if a customer PBX is being misused or has been compromised. The NEWT Managed PBX Managed Advantage The NEWT Digital PBX is managed comprehensive end to end solution.
