Chapter 1 Introduction Eaton Inteigent Power Protector (IPP) is protection software that gracefuy shuts down oca computers and servers powered by a UPSs in the event of a power outage. The Eaton IPP acquires information through oca or network communication using: Loca Communication. UPSs USB or RS-232 communication ports (Pusar & Powerware series) Network Communication. Web/SNMP Cards, such as Network Management Cards, Network-MS, and Modbus-MS, Connect UPS XSot, PXGX 2000, PXGX-UPS The Eaton IPP provides the foowing: Provides oca computer gracefu shutdown through network or oca connectivity Aows Eaton Inteigent Power Manager (IPM) to provide centraized management and supervision of Eaton IPP appications running on virtuaized servers other than VMware vcenter (such as Microsoft Hyper-V Hypervisor or Citrix Xen ). Aows Eaton IPM to provide advanced management feature (mass configuration and mass upoad) with the Eaton Network Management Cards (aso caed NMC), Network-MS (exampe, 66102/103006826), and Modbus-MS (exampe, 66103). Figure 1 shows the Eaton IPP Main Page. Figure 1. Eaton IPP Main Page Compatibiity Eaton has tested the compatibiity of the Eaton IPP with the foowing devices and appications. The Connect-UPS-E card (Powerware series) has not been tested but shoud be compatibe. If a device doesn t support the Quick Scan feature, it can be supervised if Address Scan or Range Scan operations are performed. Eaton IPM Management The Eaton IPP can be remotey managed, configured, and updated using Eaton IPM supervisory software. Using the Eaton IPM, you can perform mass configurations and mass updates of Eaton IPP appications. You shoud then find the Eaton IPP icon in the Favorites section. Linux Red Hat, OpenSUSE and Mandriva: Notification icon (system tray icon) is not started upon instaation or upgrade Soutions: Launch the foowing command, as your standard user, from a termina or using a Launch feature: $ /usr/oca/eaton/inteigentpowerprotector/mc2 -systray If you aunch this command from a termina, add an ampersand (&) at the end of the command ine in order to detach the process. Cose your graphica session and og into a new one. The notification icon wi be automaticay start with the new graphica session. Linux Unity desktop: Open shortcut is not present Soutions: Open a termina and type the foowing ine: > sudo xdg-desktop-menu insta --novendor /usr/oca/eaton /InteigentPowerProtector/desktop/Eaton.directory /usr/oca/eaton/ InteigentPowerProtector/desktop/IPP.directory /usr/oca/eaton/inteigentpowerprotector/desktop/ Open.desktop Type open in the search box of the Unity Menu to retrieve the Open shortcut. Open a Web browser and type the foowing URL: http://ocahost:4679/ Linux Network System Integration Network proxy not detected If your network proxy was not detected during instaation, you wi not be abe to access automatic update and other Internet resources from the Eaton IPP. Introduction For exampe: { 'proxyhost': "proxy.domain.com", 'proxyport': "8080" } Then, restart the Eaton IPP to reoad the configuration Eaton IPP Linux dispays the Network Communication Lost aarm after 20 minutes. Soution: Improvement in a future reease. When Activating Shutdown Controer under Linux When you enabe the Shutdown Controer optiona modue, a probem in the Eaton IPP service initiaization occurs on Linux. Soution: The issue can be easiy soved by restarting the Eaton IPP daemon once the Shutdown Controer modue has been activated. There is no need to restart the Eaton IPP daemon when disabing this feature. Events and Actions with Some Windows x64 bits OS When the shutdown command is caed from the Eaton IPP context, the system doesn't find it because it searched in C:\Windows\SysWOW64, even if the specified path is expicity C:\Windows\System32\shutdown.exe. This is a probem of some Windows x64 OS versions (e.g. XP x64 and 2003 x64). For exampe, this probem doesn't appear on Windows 7 x64. Soution: Retrieve shutdown.exe from the C:\Windows\System32\ foder and copy it into D:\IPP\ for exampe. Then modify shutdown.bat to expicity ca D:\IPP\shutdown.exe Windows Vista Hibernate Sequence By defaut, the Eaton IPP runs an Operating System Hibernate. Unfortunatey, the Hibernate option of Windows Vista is sometimes no onger avaiabe after performing a disk ceanup. In this case, Windows Vista Hibernate fais. Soutions: Change the Eaton IPP shutdown configuration from Hibernate to Shutdown. Introduction Shutdown Sequence A PW 9130 UPS doesn't shut off as expected when IPP is connected through a USB/Seria connection and when a Web SNMP card is instaed. Soution: Disabe the UPS shutoff command from the card interface to ensure a proper shutdown by Eaton IPP For that, go to the "Configuration/UPS Shutdown and Restart Settings" page of the card and seect "No" for the parameter "Load Segment to Turn Off after OS Shutdown". If you have chosen to use the USB/seria connector for communication between IPP and your UPS which aso has a web card inside, it is better to disabe the shutdown criteria of the card to ensure the shutdown and the restart of your machine. Terms This section provides reated terms and definitions. IP Address When Transmission Contro Protoco / Internet Protoco (TCP/IP) is instaed on a computer, an Internet Protoco (IP) address is assigned to the system. Each address is unique and is made up of four numbers, each between 0 and 255, such as 168.8.156.210. Secure Socket Layer The Secure Socket Layer (SSL) is a soution for securing transactions over the internet. SSL is a communication protoco that authenticates the data exchanged, as we as ensuring its confidentiaity and integrity. The protoco uses a recognized encryption method, the RSA agorithm with a pubic key. SSL is buit into Internet Web browsers. The padock in the bottom of your browser screen automaticay dispays if the server sending information uses SSL. Transmission Contro Protoco / Internet Protoco TCP/IP is a famiy of network and communication protocos for the transport and network ayers. Aso known as the Internet Protoco suite of network communication protocos. Chapter 2 Instaation This chapter provides Eaton Inteigent Power Protector (IPP) instaation prerequisites and quick start instaation procedures. Information about uninstaing and upgrading the product is aso incuded. Pease refer to the foowing instaation information for operating system compatibiity: http://pqsoftware.eaton.com/insta/common/eaton_os_compatibiities_aa.pdf The Eaton IPP Linux package is based on standard Linux mechanisms and therefore can be instaed and used with other Linux distributions. Instaation Prerequisites This section provides instaation prerequisites for the foowing: Systems hosting the Eaton IPP Systems that dispay the Web-based graphica user interface (GUI) The Eaton IPP instas a the necessary drivers for USB communication. If the Windows operating system attempts to insta a driver from Windows Update, you can cance this process. On the System Hosting Eaton IPP The Eaton IPP can be instaed on Microsoft Windows 2000, Microsoft Windows XP, Microsoft Windows Vista 7, Microsoft Windows 7 and 8, and on Microsoft Windows Server 2003, 2008, and 2012 (incuding R2 revision). To avoid network or seria port access conficts, do not insta the Eaton IPP on a machine that aso hosts: - Eaton Inteigent Power Manager (IPM) - Eaton Enterprise Power Manager - Network Management Proxy - Persona Soution Pac - LanSafe and LanSafe Web View - Netwatch! IMPORTANT For Standby Configuration (Windows) In the properties settings of the Configuration Pane > Power Option, you must deseect (uncheck) the Standby configuration of your operating system in order to be compiant with the Eaton IPP. With the standby configuration seected (checked), your system is not protected. If you want to save energy, enabe the hibernate feature. On the System that Dispays the Web-based GUI The Eaton IPP graphica interface can be accessed remotey using a simpe Web browser. Access to this interface can be secured through Secure Socket Layer (SSL) connection and is aso secured through ogin and password. Instaation The Eaton IPP graphica interface has been tested with: Googe Chrome Mozia Firefox Microsoft Internet Exporer (IE) version 7 and ater For optima performance, Googe Chrome or Firefox is recommended. For good performance, IE version 9 and ater is recommended. IE6 performance is not optima. Windows Quick Start Instructions This section incudes quick start instaation and configuration instructions. Graphica Instaation To insta the Eaton IPP: 1. On a computer with a Windows operating system, run the Eaton Inteigent Power Protector package under an administrator account. The Eaton Inteigent Power Protector Instaer Wecome screen dispays. 2. Observe the prompt and verify that the communication device is connected. Cick Next (see Figure 2). The Login screen dispays. Configuration When started, the appication automaticay performs a discovery using the Quick Scan option: Using the Quick Scan operation, you wi discover Seria ine connected UPSs (RS-232 or USB). The discovered UPS (connected through RS-232 or USB ports) is automaticay assigned as the Power source (the Status icon is Green ). Networked UPSs through broadcast. Quick Scan is compatibe with Web/SNMP Cards, incuding Network-MS (exampe, 66102 / 103006826) and Modbus-MS (exampe, 66103), Connect UPS XSot, PXGX 2000, and PXGX-UPS Card. The discovered UPS connected through the Network are not automaticay assigned as the Power source. You must seect the node and cick Set as Power Source. The icon becomes Green. Dispay the discovered nodes using Settings > Auto Discovery (see Figure 4). For the other nodes, perform the discovery based on IP address ranges using the Range Scan option. Using Range Scan discovers the nodes that are outside of the network segment and nodes that are not compatibe with the Quick Scan feature. Chapter 3 Configuration This chapter describes how to configure the Eaton Inteigent Power Protector (IPP). Discover UPSs Connected through USB/Seria To discover UPSs through a USB or Seria connection: 1. From the eft-side Views pane of the Eaton IPP main interface window, seect the Settings-> Auto Discovery menu item. The Node List page dispays. 2. The first discovered UPS connected through RS-232 or USB is automaticay assigned as the Power Source. Identify the Power Source by the green status symbo (see Figure 8). When the Power Source is configured, the status symbo icon becomes green if the configuration is successfu or gray if the communication fais. Figure 8. See Compatibiity on page 1. The Eaton IPP automaticay receives the aarms through notification or poing. For Connect UPS XSot/BD, the required configuration must be set: Set the IPP discovery password to the same vaue as the Web /SNMP read community name (defaut is pubic) In ConnectUPS Write Access Managers contro menu (via Tenet, SSH, or seria connection), disabe SNMP access restricted by IP/Hostname (this is the defaut setting since firmware version 2.02). In the Address(es) Scan diaog box, edit IP addresses to scan and eventuay specify authentication parameters that are different from goba scan settings. Each node (Network Management Card, proxy, or appication) must have a vaid IP address (or a DNS name) in the range that you have entered for auto-discovery (see Figure 10). Action active*: Enabes/disabes the action Action name*: Name for the action Event criticaities*: Critica, Warning, Norma, Communication Lost. With this parameter, you can fiter the notification according to the event eve (see Node Events List on page 52). If you seect Critica as fiter you wi not receive the associated Norma event informing that the device status changes from Critica to Norma. Event category*: A Events, Aarms, Shutdown events, Power events, Measures (see Aarms and Events in Event Category List on page 27). The pen icon aows you to seect and edit the event category. From View*: The view that triggers the event Action type*: E-mai, Command, Notification. According to your choice, specific settings are avaiabe for each action. E-mai Action Type You can set e-mai notifications for specific events. First, set the event fiter to specify the event trigger in the Create new actions diaog (see Figure 15). Then, set the e-mai notification criteria in the Edit Action diaog box (see Figure 16). The e-mai action is not active by defaut, but some of the fieds in the e-mai action settings pane are preconfigured by defaut. A vaid ogin and password must be used when the SMTP server requests authentication. Login, Password: authentication information of the SMTP server Recipient: Receiver e-mai address. (You can specify mutipe receivers by separating them with coma.) Sender (Optiona fied): The e-mai sender. (Note that your SMTP server may require a vaid e-mai address.) Subject: The e-mai subject (can be customized with pre-defined variabes). Message: The e-mai message body (can be customized with pre-defined variabes as shown in Figure 17). Digest: you can specify that you want to receive a consoidation of the aarms that occurred during a deay that you can choose (if you specify none, each aarm wi generate an e-mai. With this setting, you wi receive more e-mai for the same number of events. Possibe vaues are: None / Every 10 seconds / Every minutes / Every hour / Every day For advanced use, the foowing options are avaiabe to you: You can dupicate an existing action aready configured and modify the desired parameters. You can customize the subject, such as when you use a third-party service provider to transate e-mai into SMS. You can specify that you want to receive a consoidation of the aarms that occurred during a deay time duration. For exampe, if you specify none, each aarm generates an e-mai. With this setting, you wi receive more e-mai for the same number of events. In the Edit message diaog (see Figure 17), cick the green pus (+) button to add a variabe. Edit Message Diaog Command (Execute Script/Program) Action Type In order to execute a script or program on UPS events, the program path is required. Exampe to pay sound aarms on events: 1. Create a batch command fie containing the command: mpay32.exe /pay /cose C:/WINDOWS/Media/<sound>.wav 2. Create an action of type command caing this batch fie. Windows For Windows, the program is executed under the SYSTEM account. For the right execution of some privieged commands, it is necessary to modify the execution context before it can be run. To aow a user to run specific toos and programs with permissions that are different from those assigned to the user's account, use the Windows RunAs command. This aows you to save the password (Windows XP Service Pac 2 and more recent versions). Use the foowing Microsoft command: > runas /profie /user:<windows_ ogin> /savecred <my_program.exe> When first executed, a password is required; it is saved for subsequent executions. Linux For Linux, the Eaton IPP process is running under root priviege (psuedo command is not needed to execute a program or she script). Configuration Aarm Box Notification Action Type The Notification action is active by defaut. Notifications are provided by aarms by defaut. Up to 10 aarms are dispayed on the oca computer in an aarm box (see Figure 18). The status part of the aarm box is optiona. Configuration System Settings You can edit system settings. From the Settings > System menu item, you can edit system information, edit anguage, edit scan settings, and edit modue settings (see Figure 23). Figure 23. System Settings Page Seect one of the items on the System page and then doube-cick the item, or singe-cick the corresponding button in the right-side menu: Edit system information modifies contact and ocation information. Edit anguage aows you to change the interface anguage (Czech, Engish, French, German, Japanese, Korean, Poish, Portuguese, Russian, Simpified Chinese, Spanish, or Traditiona Chinese). Edit scan settings are the defaut access settings that are automaticay set for new discovered nodes. Edit update settings provide features that aow the system to automaticay check for Eaton software updates for you. When a new software version is detected on www.eaton.com, a wizard dispays and provides upgrade instructions for you. Eaton IPP wi aways be up-to-date if you seect (check) the Check automaticay option. Eaton IPP settings wi be retained with this operation. Eaton IPM can manage updates with arge number of computers. Refer to the Eaton Inteigent Power Manager (IPM) User s Guide for more information. Check for updates determines if a more recent version of the product is avaiabe on Eaton Web site. Edit modues aows you to enabe/disabe Eaton IPM optiona modues: - Shutdown controer modue enabes shutdown of the computer running Eaton IPM in the event of a power faiure. - Redundancy modue provides support for >1 UPS in N+1 redundant configurations. Configuration Edit Scan Settings for Discovery Administrators can set scanner authentication parameters that wi be used as the defaut when discovering new devices manuay or automaticay. These authentication settings can be set for the XML, SNMPv1, SNMPv3 and NUT protocos. Newy discovered devices wi use these authentication parameters. Depending on the device-supported protocos, Eaton IPM wi choose the needed parameters. See Compatibiity on page 1 to determine which protocos are supported. The administrator can aso activate the automatic scanner to add any automaticay discovered devices without a direct scan action of the administrator. For exampe, with automatic scan enabed, the presence of a new card on the network woud be auto-discovered and added. The administrator can activate protocos used by scanner by seecting and deseecting (togging) protoco check boxes. The administrator can aso set defaut scanner authentication settings for each protoco. The XML access setting must be set to the main account (principa) in order to check the authenticity of the aarms source. If another user account is set, this wi resut in a communication ost when using the device as a power source. To change scan settings: 1. From the eft-side Views pane of the Eaton IPP main interface window, seect the Settings > System > Scan settings menu item. 2. Cick the Edit scan settings button on the right-side page. Chapter 4 Shutdown The Eaton Inteigent Power Protector (IPP) provides oca computer gracefu shutdown when connected to a UPS through either a network card (Web/SNMP cards), USB port, or RS-232 port. When the Shutdown feature is enabed, the software dispays a communication error unti the Power Source is correcty configured as described in. Supervision is not possibe unti the power source has been set. Shutdown Configuration To access the shutdown configuration options: 1. Seect the Settings > Shutdown menu item.the Shutdown page dispays (see Figure 25). 2. Shutdown Edit Power Source This seection aow you to configure the power source. The diaog fieds incude: Source: The UPS that powers the computer hosting the Eaton IPP. This setting is aso accessibe through Settings > Auto Discovery > Set as Power Source. Load segment: The oad segment that powers the server hosting IPP. When Master is seected, the UPS is competey switched off. Login, Password: A vaid ogin and password is aways mandatory, even if the power source is another Eaton IPP with the shutdown controer feature activated. Or, for exampe, if the power source is a Web/ SNMP card, a vaid ogin and password are needed to set vaues in the Web/SNMP Card, such as when changing the shutdown duration vaue. The ogin used must be the admin account. To configure the power source, perform the foowing actions: 1. In the right-side pane next to the Shutdown page, cick the Edit Power Source button. The Edit power source diaog opens. 2. In the Power source fied, seect the UPS that powers the computer hosting the Eaton IPP. 3. Seect the UPS Load Segment that is powering the server. 4. Shutdown Duration: This is the time taken from the Shutdown now command to when the computer has competed the shutdown process. Shutdown Type: There are four shutdown type seections. If you seect hibernate, but your computer does not have this function, the Eaton IPM wi sti protect the system by carrying out the norma (defaut) shutdown action. - Hibernate. If Hibernate (defaut option) is avaiabe with your operating system, is better to use the hibernation feature (first avaiabe with Windows 2000) because there are a number of advantages. If the system is shut down, a work in progress and system information is automaticay saved to the disk. The computer is aso de-energized. When mains power returns, a the appications re-open exacty as they were and you return to the appication work environment. The Hibernate function must first have been activated in the operating system. In the power options on the Windows contro pane, check that hibernate option is activated on the Hibernate tab sheet. If restart conditions are the same, then shut down and refer to the BIOS computer configuration. For Windows Vista, see Troubeshooting on page 4. Shutdown - Shutdown. This option shuts down your appications and the system, but does not de-energize the computer. The system offers the user the choice to de-energize the computer, in which case, it is the UPS that powers on most computers. This configuration is necessary if you want the server to restart as soon as mains power returns. - Power-off. This option shuts down your appications and the system, and de-energizes the computer. This configuration is advised if you wish to be on hand when the system restarts, or for oad shedding. - Script. This option manages the shutdown in a custom script that you can use to create your own shutdown sequence. You can integrate the standard Windows shutdown command. Find more information with shutdown /? in a Windows Command Line she. Shutdown script: The absoute path of the script. UPS Connected Through Seria Connection This is an additiona option avaiabe to stop the power source by the software (primariy when connected through USB / RS-232). Figure 28. Use Case 4 2 Use Case 3 can be combined with Use Case 1 or Use Case 2. Typica exampe with four computers. According to the servers' roes, you may want to shut down the servers at different times: Computer hosting Eaton IPP#1 is directy attached to the UPS (USB/Seria). The Shutdown Controer must be instaed on the server that wi be the ast one to shut down. On Pusar series, this computer must be powered by the master outet. Computer hosting Eaton IPP#2 requires a ong deay to shutdown, such as hosting database or VMware. Computer hosting Eaton IPP#3 must be the ast one to be shutdown because other servers depend on it, such as Fie server. Computer hosting Eaton IPP#4 is another server that must be stopped before computer 2 or 3 (Web server), or this computer can aso be stopped for oad shedding purposes (workstation). The recommended configurations are: On Eaton IPP#1: Configure Shutdown Timer to None and Shutdown Duration to 120s. On Eaton IPP#2: Configure Shutdown Timer to 180s and Shutdown Duration to 180s. On Eaton IPP#3: Configure Shutdown Timer to None and Shutdown Duration to 120s. On Eaton IPP#4: Configure Shutdown Timer to 120s and Shutdown Duration to 120s. Chapter 6 Redundancy This chapter describes the Eaton Inteigent Power Protector (IPP) redundancy features. The Eaton IPP can supervise composite devices. Composite devices are virtua nodes composed of two or more UPSs mounted with specific redundancy topoogies and a dedicated redundancy eve. Specific redundance topoogies incude Redundant suppies, Hot standby, Static transfer switch (STS) for two components, and Parae for two or more components. Enabing Redundancy The Redundancy feature is enabed from Settings > System > Modues Settings (see Figure 50). After the feature is enabed, the Eaton IPP performs the foowing: Supervise composite devices Shut down the Eaton IPP computer when a composite device is set as the power source. Figure 50. The shutdown must occur, even if ony one UPS is on battery. The IPP defaut configuration is avaiabe from Settings > Shutdown > Edit Shutdown Configuration (see Figure 62). In this case, each server can have its own shutdown timer (10 min, 8 min, 6 min ). To set a predefined time of 10 min, configure the shutdown timer for 10 min in the Edit Shutdown Configuration diaog box. For this case, there are two UPSs, and one UPS is redundant. In addition, a servers are shut down at the same time. The Network Management Card Shutdown defaut configuration is avaiabe from UPS > Shutdown Parameters (see Figure 63). For ConnectUPS-X Sot or ConnectUPS-BD network cards, the NMC defaut shutdown configuration is avaiabe from Configuration > UPS Shutdown and Restart Settings (see Figure 61) To configure this shutdown, you must set a shutdown timer of 10 min for a Network Management Cards. In this case, the ast UPS sends the shutdown order after 10 min if it runs on battery. If the ast UPS never runs on battery, the first UPS shuts down at the end of autonomy and the ast UPS takes the oad if it has the capacity. Otherwise, the shutdown occurs sooner. Figure 63.
