I CAN A Positive Way Forward
About I CAN Phoenix House New England has developed a new adolescent treatment framework called I CAN: Investigate Strengths, Consider Possible Selves, Acquire Necessary Skills, Nurture Hope. Now implemented at our Phoenix House Academies in Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Rhode Island, I CAN is based on well-established research demonstrating that adolescents respond best to positive reinforcement. Counseling, interactive assignments, and off-site recreational and educational activities are integrated into all four stages: I C A N Investigate Clients discover their personal strengths. Consider Clients think about what their best possible selves might look like. Acquire Clients work on changing their thought processes and gaining the skills necessary to achieve their goals. Nurture Clients develop a plan to move forward after treatment. Assignments and outings foster hope for the future.
What makes I CAN different? I CAN is positive. It highlights achievements and personal strengths rather than past mistakes and avoidance of trouble. I CAN is individualized. Clients progress through treatment at their own pace according to their successes and personal strengths. I CAN is experience-based. It s based on actual experiences, since teenagers learn best by doing. Instead of reading about what a chef does, clients take a cooking class. Rather than discussing how they might have fun sober, they go rock climbing. I CAN understands the adolescent brain. Adolescents are not wired to think long-term. We help teens build better versions of themselves in the present and real hope for the future. At Phoenix House, we know that teenagers want to move ahead in a positive direction without the burden of past mistakes. I CAN helps teens do things differently and succeed. We have treatment centers in Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Rhode Island. For admissions and more information, please call 401 441 6107.
