Getting around in the Perugia area The regional capital is served by both public and private transport. The city centre is closed to traffic at night. A special exception is made for those who are staying in hotels within the Limited Traffic Zone. Visitors are advised to leave their cars in the car park at Pian di Massiano (take the Madonna Alta exit from the E45) and use the Minimetrò to reach the city centre. FCU This small private railway company provides rapid transfer from Perugia city centre (Sant Anna Station) to the train station in Ponte San Giovanni. The station in Ponte San Giovanni is not far from Ipogeo dei Volumni. For the timetable and ticket prices visit www.fcu.it or call 075 575401 APM This Perugian transport company offers numerous routes that connect various areas within the town and outside of it. Using APM services it is possible to reach the Ipogeo di San Manno in Ferro di Cavallo, the Strozzacapponi Necropolis, Ipogeo dei Volumi and the city centre. In addition, there are services that connect the capital with other towns in the area: Torgiano, Bettona, Deruta, Marsciano, Todi and Orvieto. For information on the city s bus routes and out-of-town services visit www.apmperugia.it or call the free phone number 800512141 Getting around in the Orvieto area The old town was built on a single rocky outcrop of travertine. This characteristic made the town a formidably well-defended citadel, however, these days it means that it is incredibly inconvenient to reach the centre by car. Visitors are advised to leave their cars in the car park at Campo della Fiera and continue to the centre on foot or by using the town s system of lifts and escalators. For those arriving by train it is easier to use the funicular railway; the entrance is very near the train station. The best place to park for those who wish to get to the centre on foot is the car park at the Necropoli del Crocifisso (Necropolis of the Crucifix). It is possible to visit the Necropolis here and then follow the signs to reach the centre. You will pass under the rock face itself and then climb a slope towards the town centre. ATC The ATC transport company in Terni serves Orvieto and the surrounding area. For information on the timetable, ticket prices and routes visit www.atcterni.it or call 0744 492711
