Initial Remit: To Develop and Deliver Modules and Information on ASME Codes & Standards onto University / College Campuses Task Force Members Ken Balkey, University of Pittsburgh Nuclear Engineering Program; Westinghouse Electric Company Rick Dellinger, American Electric Power Dr. Bruce Harding, Purdue University Lou Hayden, Lafayette College Dr. Mo Hosni, Kansas State University Mike Dodge, ASME Training & Development Jackie Oppenheim, Director, ASME Training & Development Tom Perry, Director, ASME Public Affairs & Outreach-Education 2
Assessment Based Courses in Engineering Schools Brief History: Temperature gauge of type of technical content needed from a sample of professors -Case studies were welcomed, but understood that they also needed technical expertise to help successful delivery of case study -Saw that the more complex the materials, the higher the level of expertise needed to deliver the content Defined the scope of the project -focus being US-based colleges first with international schools later -defined colleges as both Universities and Community Colleges -agreed primary target to be programs covering energy related topics Built some training content in the form of ABC elearning courses -Developed already in Training & Development (T&D) and easy to distribute to individuals 3
Knowledge of Faculty of Codes and Standards Correlation of Materials and Faculty Knowledge Knowledge Knowledge & Experience Professor utilizes online Assessment Based Course (ABC) as an assignment for students Professor utilizes PPT presentation modules and pre-recorded lectures to deliver module in class Or Professor incorporates Case Study into class Local expert presents module with subsequent inclass discussion and Case study In-class video presentation with Code Expert, and subsequent inclass discussion with professor Full course with Case Studies to be incorporated into unit and taught by professor e.g. Pitt example ASME Standards and Certification Example of Use of Codes and Standards for Students in Mechanical Engineering and Other Fields http://go.asme.org/scstudent Detail and complexity of the materials used 4

What s Happening with the Pilot Program? Ten Colleges signed up for Pilot program at end of FY12. -Pilot program was to provide access to some ABC courses to students for use as extra credit or as part of class assignments Curriculum was currently too stretched or professor transferred to another course University of Kentucky University of Portland Colorado State University West Point, COL Grant Crawford University of Puerto Rico Purdue University Deferred to later (early 2013) semester Chattanooga State Community College Strathclyde University Fall Semester Purdue University Calumet Kansas State University 7
Kansas State University 1. Last Semester Assigned Introduction to Standards course 2. This Semester applying lessons learned Assignment for 90 Complete & print Certificate Adding questions from the modules to end of unit examination to reinforce knowledge 8
Chattanooga State Community College Two programs under the Pilot Program and goal is to compare responses before taking next steps. 1. This semester (in progress) NDE programs in Visual inspection, Radiology and Liquid penetrant/magnetic particle inspection Introduction to Codes and Standards, BPV Code: Section V 2. Next semester Codes Standards and Regulations courses Introduction to Codes and Standards, BPV Code: Section III, NQA-1 Complements the ASME Non-Destructive Examination (NDE) and Quality Control (QC) Personnel Qualification and Certification Program already underway. 9
What Else Has Been Happening? Have built a software interface which enables T&D to allocate bulk seats for colleges to then register their own students Taskforce within Standardization and Testing to develop web page to act as central hub for students to become better prepared by understanding the use of Codes and Standards Liaison with Board on Pressure Technology Group Lou Bialy presentation on A17 Elevator Standards at Pittsburgh (videotaped) 10
What s next? Is there a place for ABC courses in curricula? Need some tangible feedback before making a decision Still strong demand for Case Studies how can we develop case studies and incorporate video presentations? ASME and MOOCs (massive open online courses). ASME Education Leadership summit feedback IAB and ME education leaders recommendations 11
