Ed.D. Leadership in Schling The Leadership in PK-12 Educatin dctrate (Ed.D.) is designed t meet needs f leaders f schl systems (prekindergarten thrugh high schl graduatin). The prgram ffers academic rigr, fcusing the curriculum n the learning needs f advanced practitiner-schlars whse prfessinal gal is t remain in PK-12 educatin. The cmpetitive, blended prgram is three years in length with nline curse wrk fall and spring f each year and a 2-week summer residency each year. Fall and spring nline cursewrk during years tw and three is augmented with 5 face-tface r vide cnference meetings. The mix f face-t-face and nline cursewrk addresses the wrking prfessinal s needs fr cnvenience, the supprt f a chrt, and strng relatinships with faculty. High Academic Rigr Fcused n Advanced Practice Students in the Ed.D. prgram will cmplete f fundatinal cursewrk 18 credit hurs f cre specializatin curses 12 credit hurs f applied research methds curses a sequence f 2 cmprehensive exams (similar t existing cmprehensive examinatins) a dissertatin that meets expectatins as utlined in the GSE dctral handbk, while rted in a lcality with recmmendatins fcused n applicatin t a lcality. A Cmpetitive, Three Year Blended Prgram In rder t address the learning needs f advanced practitiners and ffer a cmpetitive prgram, the PK-12 Leadership Ed.D. will be based n a blended learning mdel with a chrt f students admitted annually in the fall fr a defined three year sequence. The UMass Lwell prgram is an affrdable flexible degree which ffers mre pprtunities fr face-tface faculty/student interactin than fully nline prgrams. As a blended prgram, the UMass Lwell Ed.D. will include a tw-week residency each summer and five n-campus (r vide cnference) evening sessins each semester, alng with nline learning. Leadership in Schling, Ed.D. Degree Pathway Admissins Requirements: Each applicant must have a master f educatin degree r master's degree in a field relevant t PK-12 educatin that prepares him/her fr advanced study. Additinally, applicants shuld have recent teaching and/r leadership experience in a PK-12 setting and be interested in research int and the rle f leaders in schls. Interested applicatins shuld submit an nline applicatin and fee thrugh the ffice f Graduate Admissins, a tw-page admissin essay explaining experience in PK-12 educatin and reasns fr wishing t enter dctral study, GRE scres, three letters f recmmendatin, and fficial transcripts Degree Requirements: Cmplete a minimum f 42 credits f dctral level (600 r 700) curse wrk with a cumulative grade f B (3.0) r better. The dctral candidate must pass (2) dctral examinatins, satisfactrily cmplete and defend a dissertatin as apprved by the candidate s dissertatin cmmittee, and cmplete the prgram within the University prescribed time limit fr dctral prgrams. (The chrt prgram is designed fr cmpletin in three years. In the event f unexpected circumstances, this time may be extended fr candidates wh have a cumulative grade f B r better.) Students will critically examine research and schlarly thery in these fields and their relatinship t PK-12 practice. 05.693 Organizatinal Learning This curse will intrduce students t research and thery in the field f rganizatinal learning and its applicatin t PK-12 practice. Students will study the rigins, evlutin and cntemprary findings f research in this field. Students will explre the practical implicatins f rganizatinal learning fr PK-12 leadership. 01.691 Develping Inclusive Schl Cntexts This curse will intrduce students t thery and research abut structural inequities, barriers t educatin, and prmising practices fr addressing these barriers. Students will examine thery and research and implicatins fr practice in PK-12 leadership 01.692 Law, Plicy, and Finance In this curse students will examine schlarship and research in the areas f law, plicy and finance as these affect educatinal practice. They will analyze law, plicy and finance and its implicatins fr leaders in PK-12 schls and schl systems. 05.694 Systems Leadership I Drawing n rganizatinal, management, and educatinal schlarship, this curse intrduces students t cncepts and practices assciated with strategic systems leadership. Students will apply their understandings f hw t leverage bth frmal and infrmal surces f influence in their analysis f relevant teaching cases and the data they cllect in an extensive field study prject. 05.695 Systems Leadership II Building n the cre cncepts and practices intrduced in Systems Leadership I, this curse fcuses specifically n hw effective leaders use data t understand and address the challenges f their perating envirnment. Imprtantly, the curse fcuses n nt nly the technical knwledge and skills leaders need t use data as a lever fr imprvement at scale, but n the adaptive leadership skills required fr meaningful systems change. 6

05.696 Strategic Partnering with Families and Cmmunities This curse will critically examine the variety f issues assciated with partnering with parents, families and cmmunity rganizatins. Thrugh analysis f thery, research and cllective knwledge, dctral students will learn hw t strategically engage parents, families and cmmunity rganizatins and recgnize the different frms f engagement. This curse will emphasize cllabrative strategies that shares pwer with key stakehlders in U.S. schls. 07.691 Applied Research Design This curse is designed t prvide PK-12 practitiners with an understanding f the principles f research design and the ethical respnsibilities f cnducting a research study. Participants will learn a brad range f research methdlgy appraches that can be applied t prblems f practice. Participants will becme skilled at reading, evaluating, and judging the trustwrthiness f studies using different methdlgical appraches. They will design a practitiner-riented research study. 07.692 Quantitative Data Analysis fr Practitiner Leaders The primary fcus f this curse is t prepare practitiner leaders t understand, interpret, and analyze quantitative data as it relates t their identified prblem f practice. 07.693 Qualitative Data Analysis fr Practitiner Leaders This curse will intrduce practitiner leaders t the field f qualitative research and prepare them with the skills, techniques and knwledge necessary t cnduct qualitative investigatin in a practitiner-riented research study. 07.xxx (r 07.642) Research Elective 7

COMPREHENSIVE EXAM I PORTFOLIO AND PORTFOLIO ORAL DEFENSE The prtfli is intended t demnstrate readiness t mve n t the develpment f a qualifying paper fllwed by the independent wrk f the dissertatin. The prtfli is made up f fur parts: the visin statement, the prtfli checklist, the artifact mems and the evidence binder. The prtfli defense is a frmal presentatin f the prtfli fllwed by questins frm a faculty cmmittee. The visin statement. In an essay f 2000-wrds maximum, the student presents his/her visin fr leadership in schling, situating his/her views within the relevant seminal literature in the field f educatin: - Scial justice and equity - Change and imprvement - Relatinship f plicy and practice - Relatinship f leadership and student learning The prtfli checklist. Using the Leadership in Schling Outcmes (Table 2), the student will plt the majr assignments she/he has cmpleted fr the curses he/she has taken, nting the utcme(s) fr which each f the assignments stands as evidence. The student shuld be prepared t prvide evidence and a ratinal fr each item during the ral defense. Leadership jurney essay. In an essay f 2000 wrds maximum, the student will explain the intellectual jurney she/he has frged during her/his time in the dctral prgram explaining hw he/she has evlved as an educatinal leader. The student will identify fur artifacts that represent turning pints in this leadership jurney. Examples f artifacts are a paper written fr a curse, a publicatin, a written descriptin f a K-12 curriculum the student develped, materials fr a prfessinal develpment initiative the student led, materials fr an exercise in cmmunity advcacy/activism, materials related t an rganizatinal change prcess in the student s wrkplace, materials related t a cnference presentatin, etc. Artifact mems. Bth the written prtfli and the ral defense must be deemed as passing by at least three f fur faculty members. 8

A student wh des nt successfully defend the prtfli defense the first time, may resubmit the prtfli and attempt a secnd defense. A secnd unsuccessful defense will result in terminatin f the student s dctral prgram. COMPREHENSIVE EXAM II The secnd cmprehensive exam is a qualifying paper f apprximately 25 pages, which is demnstrates readiness t mve n t the independent wrk f the dissertatin. In the qualifying paper the student identifies a prblem that is based n educatin practice. The student describes the prblem, the cntext fr the prgram, and his/her ratinale fr studying this prblem. The student presents a review f relevant schlarly research and describes the methdlgy that he/she will use t explre this prblem. A student wh des nt successfully pass Cmprehensive Exam II the first time, may submit the paper a secnd time. A secnd unsuccessful defense will result in terminatin f the student s dctral prgram. DISSERTATION The student will submit and defend a dissertatin cnsistent with Graduate Schl plicy. All plicies pertaining t the existing Ed.D. will apply. 9
