Ed.D. Leadership in Schling The Leadership in PK-12 Educatin dctrate (Ed.D.) is designed t meet needs f leaders f schl systems (prekindergarten thrugh high schl graduatin). The prgram ffers academic rigr, fcusing the curriculum n the learning needs f advanced practitiner-schlars whse prfessinal gal is t remain in PK-12 educatin. The cmpetitive, blended prgram is three years in length with nline curse wrk fall and spring f each year and a 2-week summer residency each year. Fall and spring nline cursewrk during years tw and three is augmented with 5 face-tface r vide cnference meetings. The mix f face-t-face and nline cursewrk addresses the wrking prfessinal s needs fr cnvenience, the supprt f a chrt, and strng relatinships with faculty. The UMass Lwell prgram is an affrdable flexible degree which ffers mre pprtunities fr face-tface faculty/student interactin than fully nline prgrams. As a blended prgram, the UMass Lwell Ed.D. will include a tw-week residency each summer and five n-campus (r vide cnference) evening sessins each semester, alng with nline learning. Additinally, applicants shuld have recent teaching and/r leadership experience in a PK-12 setting and be interested in research int and the rle f leaders in schls. Interested applicatins shuld submit an nline applicatin and fee thrugh the ffice f Graduate Admissins, a tw-page admissin essay explaining experience in PK-12 educatin and reasns fr wishing t enter dctral study, GRE scres, three letters f recmmendatin, and fficial transcripts Degree Requirements: Cmplete a minimum f 42 credits f dctral level (600 r 700) curse wrk with a cumulative grade f B (3.0) r better. The dctral candidate must pass (2) dctral examinatins, satisfactrily cmplete and defend a dissertatin as apprved by the candidate s dissertatin cmmittee, and cmplete the prgram within the University prescribed time limit fr dctral prgrams. This curse will emphasize cllabrative strategies that shares pwer with key stakehlders in U.S. schls. 07.691 Applied Research Design This curse is designed t prvide PK-12 practitiners with an understanding f the principles f research design and the ethical respnsibilities f cnducting a research study. Participants will learn a brad range f research methdlgy appraches that can be applied t prblems f practice. Participants will becme skilled at reading, evaluating, and judging the trustwrthiness f studies using different methdlgical appraches. The prtfli defense is a frmal presentatin f the prtfli fllwed by questins frm a faculty cmmittee. The visin statement. In an essay f 2000-wrds maximum, the student presents his/her visin fr leadership in schling, situating his/her views within the relevant seminal literature in the field f educatin: - Scial justice and equity - Change and imprvement - Relatinship f plicy and practice - Relatinship f leadership and student learning The prtfli checklist. Using the Leadership in Schling Outcmes (Table 2), the student will plt the majr assignments she/he has cmpleted fr the curses he/she has taken, nting the utcme(s) fr which each f the assignments stands as evidence. The student shuld be prepared t prvide evidence and a ratinal fr each item during the ral defense. Leadership jurney essay. In an essay f 2000 wrds maximum, the student will explain the intellectual jurney she/he has frged during her/his time in the dctral prgram explaining hw he/she has evlved as an educatinal leader. COMPREHENSIVE EXAM II The secnd cmprehensive exam is a qualifying paper f apprximately 25 pages, which is demnstrates readiness t mve n t the independent wrk f the dissertatin. In the qualifying paper the student identifies a prblem that is based n educatin practice. The student describes the prblem, the cntext fr the prgram, and his/her ratinale fr studying this prblem. The student presents a review f relevant schlarly research and describes the methdlgy that he/she will use t explre this prblem. A student wh des nt successfully pass Cmprehensive Exam II the first time, may submit the paper a secnd time. A secnd unsuccessful defense will result in terminatin f the student s dctral prgram. DISSERTATION The student will submit and defend a dissertatin cnsistent with Graduate Schl plicy. All plicies pertaining t the existing Ed.D. will apply. 9
