L Accueil - Welcome Desk DOCTORAL STUDENTS ARIANE PRACTICAL GUIDE RESEARCHERS English 2015/2016

STUDENT RESEARCHER Ease up your arrival with EDITORIAL The Université Fédérale Toulouse Midi-Pyrénées combines 14 universities and Grandes Écoles as well as 5 research bodies, deployed throughout the region. All together, the establishments deliver over 500 degrees in all the disciplines. 15% of the 120,000 students come from abroad to take their courses in French or in English. Studying and conducting research under proper conditions means addressing a series of concerns. These include getting accommodation, getting around, accessing sports and cultural activities, protecting yourself from health risks and getting care, finding your way in a town, a region or a country that you are often discovering for the first time, knowing how to get involved and take the initiative, working, getting administrative authorisation to study in France, being able to carry out studies with a disability etc. Make your installation stress-free: upscale shuttle at the airport or train station bank account opening L Accueil Welcome Desk is a place for students and researchers from the Université Fédérale Toulouse Midi-Pyrénées. The member university establishments and Grandes Ecoles of Midi-Pyrénées wanted to make life easier for the students and researchers invited by creating an additional space to the ones offered already by each of the establishments to their own students and researchers. This desk will bring together, in the same place, various services necessary for successfully settling in to our university. Aurélie Garriga... accommodation booking home insurance personal public transportation card... The Desk will open for the start of the 2015 university year in new premises located at 41 des allées Jules Guesde in Toulouse next to the Jardin des plantes botanical garden and 5 minutes from the tramway, metro (Carmes / Palais de Justice) and bus lines. With this new tool, we hope to contribute to making your student and researcher life easier and more fulfilling. It s one of the keys to success! toulbox.univ-toulouse.fr

STUDYING IN TOULOUSE AND IN MIDI-PYRÉNÉES HIGHER EDUCATION IN FRANCE Universities and Ecoles To enrol in higher education you must have the French baccalaureate (the end of secondary school diploma equivalent to British A levels or the American high school diploma) or an equivalent French or foreign diploma. There are two kinds of education: - University education: in all the domains (art, health, human sciences, social sciences, science and technology, etc.) - The Ecoles (French academically selective private universities): engineering, business, architecture, veterinary, agronomic education, etc. Organisation of studies In order to ensure the recognition of degrees at a European level and to facilitate student and researcher mobility, the European countries have adapted a common higher education system. This system is based on: A break up of the LMD system: Bachelor s (3 years), Masters (5 years), PhD (8 years) A semester based organisation (1 year = 2 semesters) Degree programs are organised and separated into several Teaching Units called Unités d Enseignement (UE) that can be either compulsory or elective. They include lectures, tutorials, internships, dissertations and so on The European Credit Transfer System (ECTS): each UE corresponds to a certain number of ECTS (1 semester passed = 30 ECTS) Information: www.enseignementsup-recherche.gouv.fr www.diplomatie.gouv.fr Find all the places mentioned in the guide at www.plan.univ-toulouse.fr Publication manager Marie-France Barthet Communication Alexandre Lévy Séverine Couteau Translation Tradutours Design, editing, creation Séverine Couteau Hélène Dubourg Shamsiya Khashimova Zelda Lannes Rebecca Pustoc h Stéphanie Saleilles Graphical layout and creation Antoine Azaïs Publication coordinator Zelda Lannes Photo credits Université Fédérale Toulouse Midi-Pyrénées LICENCE PROFESSIONNELLE

Some figures: Midi-Pyrénées 2,882,000 residents 115,000 students in Albi, Auch, Cahors, Castres, Figeac, Foix, Montauban, Rodez, Tarbes, Toulouse Toulouse 442,000 residents 103, 000 students Albi A UNESCO world heritage site since 2010, Albi is changing at a great rate. With a protected urban centre, Albi offers a high-quality urban atmosphere combining the authenticity of a bishopric, built around the St Cecilia Cathedral, unique due to its pink brick construction material, with an urban life where everything can be done on foot. For two years, the Toulouse Lautrec Museum has been reaffirming the international cultural dimension of the city. Albi is currently developing a new district Les Cordeliers, with the grand theatre state-of-the-art cinema complex allowing it to position itself on a complementary footing with Toulouse with a diverse range of live shows available. With all its sporting and associative activities Albi has attracted many higher education establishments: the J-F. Champollion University Centre, the École des Mines, the ÉSPÉ Midi-Pyrénées and the IUT Paul Sabatier.

Auch Less than an hour from Toulouse, the capital of Gascogne and its urban area offer a choice environment for those who want to study in ideal conditions. Attractive rental properties for accommodation, modern premises and facilities in all the higher education establishments based in the area, a rich and varied cultural offer, an exceptional historical heritage and a safe environment make Auch and its urban area a choice destination for the students of the region who want to prepare to enter working life under ideal conditions. Castres The main town of the urban area of Castres-Mazamet, Castres combines the traditional know-how of the textile, granite and timber industries and more recent businesses like mechanics, pharmaceuticals and cosmetics (Pierre Fabre Laboratories). Castres is also a garrison town and a rugby one. For several years Castres has been developing a fully-fledged higher education centre with the Centre Universitaire J-F Champollion, IUT A Paul Sabatier and the IFSI. Grand Cahors Abxbay Cahors City of Art and History, Cahors has an impressive heritage and numerous local facilities, making the administrative centre of the Lot département an ideal city to study and live in. Since the opening of the Pôle Patrimoine de l Université Toulouse - Jean Jaurès (Toulouse University Heritage Cluster) in Cahors, the development of higher education and research courses has continued, completing an already wide offer with the IFSI, the ÉSPÉ Midi-Pyrénées, the Lycée des Territoires, the CCI du Lot and the colleges and technical colleges. Student life is galvanised by an activity leader, who advises and helps the students with their projects (Facebook page: Vie Etudiante Cahors). Figeac Located in the heart of a tourist town, the IUT of Figeac (420 students) has a reputation for the quality of the student life (free transport, spacious accommodation at reasonable prices) and offers 3 education departments: Mechanical and Production Engineering (1 DUT French 2 year further education diploma - and 2 Licence pros French 3 year vocational higher education diploma); Sales Techniques (1 DUT and 2 Licences pros); Social Careers with social and socio-cultural animation option (1 DUT). 8 9 Foix The Centre Universitaire de Foix et de l Ariège welcomes students from all over France and abroad with specialised and recognised vocational education on the subjects of local area development, sustainable tourism, heritage and training in education professions. Thanks to the continued and fundamental support of the Conseil départemental of Ariège and the town of Foix, students and teachers benefit from a remarkable working environment. Montauban et Tarn-et-Garonne Also known as the City of Ingres, Montauban is known for being the birthplace of one of the greatest painters of the 19th Century, Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres, and of the sculptor Antoine Bourdelle. A City of art but also the second cluster of activity in the Midi-Pyrénées region, Montauban and Tarn-et- Garonne welcome students on over 40 courses, from undergraduate degrees to masters including BTS (UK HND equivalent) and Licences Pro (3 year diplomas). The subject areas include education (ÉSPÉ), health (IFSI), law, applied arts, archives and multimedia libraries (Centre Universitaire Tarn-et-Garonne), Business Management (CCI), Logistics (Lycée Jean Baylet), Electronics (Lycée Bourdelle) and Building/ Public Works (Lycée de Beaumont de Lomagne) as well as Horticulture (Lycée de Montauban Capou).

2. L accueil - Welcome Desk Dominique Viet Rodez Located less than two hours from Montpellier and Toulouse, Rodez offers over 3000 students a diverse higher education provision going from 2 to 5 year courses: 70 courses are provided in 9 establishments including the IUT (UT1 Capitole) and the Centre Universitaire J-F. Champollion. Moreover, the town welcomes students in a pleasant setting with numerous sporting, cultural and festive activities. Tarbes Thanks to the different courses which are offered (DUT, BTS, Preparatory classes, Bachelors, Masters, PhDs, etc.), Tarbes is the 2nd university cluster of Midi-Pyrénées (www.cutp.net). Located between plains, ocean and mountains, the Tarbes urban area is a cluster where research is important. Halfway between Toulouse and the Atlantic coast, Tarbes is at the foot of the Pyrenees mountain chain, less than half an hour from the winter sports stations. Toulouse Capital of the Midi-Pyrénées region, it has undergone an intense demographic and economic development which today makes it a city with an international dimension. The Pink City is also characterised by a wide ranging artistic boom which highlights a rich and varied cultural heritage. Toulouse welcomes 91% of the Midi-Pyrénées students and the majority of the research laboratories. This concentration in terms of higher education and research mirrors its economic activities. On 1st September 2015, the Université Fédérale Toulouse Midi-Pyrénées is opening the Accueil Welcome Desk at 41 des allées Jules Guesde in Toulouse. A unique 300m2 reception area for essential services for all French and foreign students and researchers invited to Toulouse and Midi-Pyrénées. The CAF, the CROUS and the student service of the foreign office of the Haute-Garonne Prefecture will receive students there to carry out the different procedures necessary for migratory formalities such as getting accommodation assistance, a deposit, etc. Our teams will be there in order to advise you and explain to you the procedures for finding accommodation, getting to know the cultural and sporting activities and transport means. They will also listen and give information to students with a disability, those looking for a job, healthcare, information on student associations and their initiatives, those looking to find out about the training programmes available, etc. We look forward to holding the first meeting with students and researchers benefiting from the Toul Box here. To do this, the Université Fédérale Toulouse Midi-Pyrénées will mobilise teams speaking several foreign languages, including English, Spanish, German, Chinese, Japanese, Uzbek and Russian. The Université Fédérale Toulouse Midi-Pyrénées will rely on a network of additional leading partners: the departments of university establishments and Grandes Ecoles, the OFII, the SIMPPS, the CRIJ, the City of Toulouse, the Conseil Régional Midi-Pyrénées, the Maison Départementale des Personnes Handicapées (MDPH), etc. Contact: laccueil@univ-toulouse.fr 10 11 Aurélie Garriga
