Howard Nicol School of Practical Nursing, located at Portage Lakes Career Center, is approved by the Ohio Board of Nursing. Clinical experiences are an integral part of the program and are completed at a variety of health care facilities and agencies. This 11-month program prepares graduates to take the National Council of State Boards of Nursing Licensing Examination (NCLEX-PN). Graduates of the program have a high rate of success on the Licensing Exam, and upon graduation, are employed at hospitals, long-term care facilities, physicians and dentists offices, clinics and health care agencies. MEDICAL ASSISTING(FT) (740 classroom hours/160 practicum hours) Because of the great advancements in medicine, and the country s aging population, there will be a continuous increase in demand for Medical Assistants. As one of the fastest growing Allied Health Careers, these multi-skilled health care professionals perform administrative and clinical tasks such as; managing a medical office, administering EKG tests, giving injections, and more, which keep the offices of physicians, podiatrists, chiropractors, and other health practitioners running smoothly. The Medical Assisting Program at PLCC offers hands-on experience in our newly constructed laboratory as well as practicum experiences in a variety of area medical facilities. Upon completion of the program, students will have the opportunity to sit for the Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) examination offered through the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA) and sit for Phlebotomy certification offered through the National Healthcare Association (CPT), which is included in tuition costs. This course prepares you to take the National Pharmacy Technician Certification exam (CPhT). At PLCC, we provide hands-on training to master the skills needed to install, maintain, diagnose, and correct problems throughout the entire heating and ventilation system. Upon completion of the program, HVACR technicians often specialize in either installation or maintenance and repair of residential and light commercial HVACR systems. Students will learn the proper diagnostic procedures that make troubleshooting complex problems a simplified task. This requires good reasoning ability and a thorough knowledge of automobiles. Reading, mathematics, and computer skills are emphasized to keep up with new technology, new services, repair procedures and specifications. GENERAL INFORMATION, & ENROLLMENT Student Conduct Adult students attending the Portage Lakes Career Center are expected to adhere to all regulations set forth by the PLCC Board of Education and the PLCC Adult Student Handbook. Non-Smoking Policy Portage Lakes Career Center is a tobacco-free campus. Admission Requirements Students are encouraged to enroll in any class regardless of age or gender. Training in nontraditional careers is strongly encouraged. Students must provide the following at the time of registration: Complete application form Official high school diploma or GED All programs (with the exception of Practical Nursing) require a $100 deposit to reserve a seat in the class. The deposit includes the WorkKeys assessment and one re-test fee, if required. If the student does not meet program requirements, or the class is not offered, $70 of the deposit will be refunded. Practical Nursing requires a $50 deposit and a $200 nonrefundable program fee to hold a seat for the student upon acceptance. The deposit includes the WorkKeys assessment and one re-test fee, if required. To be admitted to a program, student must pass the WorkKeys test at the program s required level. Copy of driver s license and proof of insurance (Auto Tech only) NOTE: There are additional requirements for the Health and Medical programs. AT PLCC, TUITION IS ALL-INCLUSIVE! Cancellation of Classes The Adult Education Department of PLCC reserves the right to cancel, postpone, discontinue or combine classes before or at the first class meeting due to low enrollment. We must cancel classes that do not meet a required minimum enrollment. A minimum of 6 students is needed to ensure operation of most classes; some classes require higher minimum enrollments. If a class is canceled for any of the above reasons, the student will receive a full tuition refund. Attempts are made to contact students whose class has been canceled. To avoid class cancellations, all registrations must be received the Friday before the start of each class. Refund Policy If a student withdraws from any program BEFORE classes have begun, we will refund the tuition paid, less the deposit which is non-refundable. If a student withdraws from any program ONCE CLASSES HAVE BEGUN, the percentage of hours attended by the student will be calculated based upon the total hours in the payment period. The withdrawing student will be billed for the percentage of hours completed. The deposit is non-refundable. Refer to chart for refund percentages. Class Rescheduling If an adult education class is canceled due to an emergency, weather condition, or teacher absence, a makeup class may be scheduled at the discretion of PLCC. Class Confirmation You may assume that your class will be held unless you are notified that it has been canceled. Completion Requirements Students who successfully complete a full-time program will receive a Career Passport, which includes a Certificate of Completion, transcript, list of competencies learned, and more. Completion standards include a minimum of 90% attendance and a C average of 80% (requirements in some programs may be higher).
