HP understand is a server with the Tivoli Storage Manager Server package installed. It controls writes and reads to a storage pool or pools (either disk or tape) and maintains the Tivoli Storage Manager database, which contains all information about the server, its backup-archive clients, and the data backed up from those clients. The Tivoli Storage Manager server may or may not share a tape library. library manager--this is the Tivoli Storage Manager server that controls library robot activity in a shared library environment. There can only be one library manager per library, although a library manager can manage more than one library. library client--this is a Tivoli Storage Manager server that is sharing a library with a library manager. There can be multiple library clients per shared library, but it is recommended that there be no more library clients per library than available tape drives. backup-archive client (or client node)--this is a server, workstation, or PC with the Tivoli Storage Manager backup-archive client package installed. It sends its data for backup over the LAN to a Tivoli Storage Manager server, which forwards the data to a storage pool. storage agent server--this is a server with the Tivoli Storage Manager Storage Agent package installed. This server can share tape devices on a SAN with a library manager, but does not maintain a Tivoli Storage Manager database. The information about backup-archive clients assigned to a Tivoli Storage Manager storage agent server is maintained on the library manager, and those backup-archive clients are configured as client nodes on the library manager. EBS-specific requirements For Tivoli Storage Manager Version 5.3 and later, the license for Tivoli Storage Manager Extended Edition is necessary to operate in an EBS environment. Installation of this single license is sufficient and replaces the need to install multiple licenses. There may be other licenses necessary for particular applications (Oracle, Exchange, and so on). 10 Introduction Supported configurations Figure 1 shows a diagram of a basic storage domain configuration. Refer to the EBS Compatibility Matrix and the HP StorageWorks Enterprise Backup Solution design guide to be sure your system components are included in the compatibility matrix, and that your hardware is properly configured. Basic storage domain configurations The basic EBS storage domain may consist of a heterogeneous connection of multiple servers sharing multiple libraries and RAID array storage systems. Figure 1 Basic storage domain configuration 1 3 5 7 9 11 13 HP RAID array storage HP Tape Library IBM p-series UNIX server HP Integrity server HP Integrity cluster Windows Server cluster HP PA-RISC server 2 4 6 8 10 12 HP Virtual Library System Fibre Channel SAN switches Sun Solaris UNIX cluster HP ProLiant server Sun Solaris UNIX Server HP NAS server Enterprise Backup Solution with Tivoli Storage Manager implementation guide 11 12 Introduction 2 Installation and configuration Before installing your backup software, refer to the HP StorageWorks EBS design guide for assistance in setting up your hardware. Installation checklist To ensure that all components on the SAN are logged in and configured properly, you must be able to answer yes to each of the following questions: Are all hardware components at the minimum supported firmware revision (HBA, Fibre Channel switch, router, tape library drives, tape library robot, and Virtual Library)? Is the minimum patch level support for the operating system installed? Is the minimum supported HBA driver loaded on the host? Is the tape library online? Are all tape and robotic devices mapped and configured in Command View TL? Are all tape and robotic devices being allocated to hosts through Secure Manager? If using a Virtual Library, is LUN masking set up to allocate devices to the appropriate hosts? Are the Fibre Channel ports of the tape library correctly logged into the Fibre Channel switch? Is the host server correctly logged into the Fibre Channel switch? If the Fibre Channel switches are cascaded or meshed, are all Interswitch Link (ISL) ports correctly logged in? Are the Fibre Channel ports of the tape library and the host server HBA in the same switch zone (either by World Wide Name (WWN) or Port)? Does the host server detect all of the tape and robotic devices intended to be used? Are the latest Tivoli Storage Manager (TSM) patches installed? NOTE: HP recommends placing devices in host-centric zones and making them available to the server. Host-centric zoning is implemented by creating a specific zone for each server or host and adding only those storage elements that are used by that host. Host-centric zoning prevents a server from detecting any other devices. Installing Tivoli Storage Manager After all components on the SAN are logged in and configured, the system is ready for the installation of Tivoli Storage Manager. You're reading an excerpt. Click here to read official HP STORAGEWORKS ENTERPRISE BACKUP SOLUTIONS (EBS) user guide http://yourpdfguides.com/dref/874840

For detailed installation procedures and requirements, see the Tivoli Storage Manager Installation Guide or visit the IBM support web site: http://www.ibm.com/software/sysmgmt/products/support/ibmtivolistoragemanager.html NOTE: HP recommends that you remove any other backup software currently configured on your system before installing Tivoli Storage Manager. Other backup software, tape device applications that are part of the OS, and SAN or system management software can negatively affect how Tivoli Storage Manager installs and functions. Enterprise Backup Solution with Tivoli Storage Manager implementation guide 13 Tivoli Storage Manager configuration caveats Configuration of libraries When configuring HP libraries and drives with Tivoli Storage Manager, the Tivoli Storage Manager device driver must be used to create device files in UNIX/Linux, or to attach to discovered devices in Windows. The Tivoli Storage Manager device driver contains specifications unique to HP equipment that Tivoli Storage Manager must know in order to function properly. When configuring tape drives on the Tivoli Storage Manager library manager, the element numbers of the drives are needed. The setting ELEMent=AUTODetect in the DEFINE/UPDATE DRIVE command is supported with HP libraries. The specific element numbers for each Tivoli Storage Manager-supported HP library can be found at the following links: For supported devices with AIX, HP-UX, Solaris, and Windows: http://www.ibm.com/software/sysmgmt/products/support/ibm_tsm_supported_devices_for_aixhpsu NWIN.html For supported devices with Linux: http://www.ibm.com/software/sysmgmt/products/support/ibm_tsm_supported_devices_for_linux.html Choose the correct device class, and then click on the link for your library. A listing of the element addresses for the drives is provided. TSM device drivers TSM provides the tsmscsi device driver for each supported operating system. For some tape devices, TSM allows the option of installing and configuring the tsmscsi device driver, native operating system device driver, or third party vendor device driver. For HP tape drives and libraries, HP only supports the tsmscsi device driver. Refer to the TSM Administrator's Guide by operating system for more details on installing and configuring device drivers. IBM TSM Windows 2003 (x86/x64/ia64) Tape library robot driver needed Install tsmscsi device driver from Windows Device Manager Console. Linux RHEL & SLES (x86/x64) HP-UX (PA-RISC & IA64) Solaris (SPARC & x86/x64) AIX 14 Installation and configuration Linux Device Configuration When configuring Tivoli Storage Manager device files on Linux, it is necessary to add a line to the /etc/rc.d/rc.local file that runs the Tivoli Storage Manager device configuration script during each reboot. Add the following line: /<TSM devices directory>/tsmscsi where <TSM devices directory> is by default at /opt/tivoli/tsm/devices/bin. If this line is not added, Tivoli Storage Manager device files disappear if the system is rebooted. Installation best practices Follow the HP StorageWorks EBS Compatibility Matrix and the HP StorageWorks Enterprise Backup Solution design guide found on the HP web site: http://www.hp.com/go/ebs. The matrix of hardware, software, and firmware is updated monthly and helps customers and support personnel maintain their EBS environment. @@@@@@ Limit rebooting during backup windows. @@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@However, it can be tricky and is turned off by default. @@1. @@See the SET SERVERHLADDRESS, SET SERVERLLADDRESS, and SET SERVERPASSWORD commands in the Tivoli Storage Manager Administrator's Reference for more information. 2. On the library manager, define each library client in "Other Servers" in the administrative interface or by using the DEFINE SERVER command. 3. After defining the library client, run the following command on the library manager: UPDATE SERVER <server name> FORCESYNC=YES where <server name> is the library client. This forces a check of the IP connectivity to the library client. 4. Go to each library client, and define the library manager, either with the administrative interface or with the DEFINE SERVER command. 5. Run the UPDATE SERVER command to force verification of IP communication with the library manager. Tivoli Storage Manager in a mixed media environment To configure an HP tape library with TSM in a mixed media environment, please see the HP StorageWorks Implementing Mixed Media in HP StorageWorks Tape Libraries implementation guide found at: http://h20000.www2.hp. com/bc/docs/support/supportmanual/c00583694/c00583694.pdf Performance and tuning To analyze speed and performance, it is necessary to examine the entire backup process as a system. Although many factors contribute to the overall performance of the system, there are four main factors that must be thoroughly understood to determine the maximum performance in any specific situation. These factors are: Storage connection--for the EBS, this is Fibre Channel connection. File (data) compression ratio--the amount of compression has a direct impact on the rate at which a tape drive can read/write data. Source disk and file systems--data source, local disk, RAID array storage, file system type, and volume type. Tape drive--in the EBS, these are the various types of tape drives in HP StorageWorks Libraries. 16 Installation and configuration File (data) compression ratio HP tests show that not all data can be compressed equally. You're reading an excerpt. Click here to read official HP STORAGEWORKS ENTERPRISE BACKUP SOLUTIONS (EBS) user guide http://yourpdfguides.com/dref/874840

The compression ratio affects the amount of data that can be stored on each tape cartridge, as well as the speed at which the tape drives can read or write the data. Table 2 shows typical compression ratios of various applications. Table 2 Typical file compression ratio Typical Compression 3.8:1 2.5:1 2.0:1 1.6:1 1.4:1 1.2:1 Data Type CAD Spreadsheet/Word Processing Typical File/Print Server Lotus Notes Databases Microsoft Exchange/SQL Server Databases Oracle/SAP Databases Source disk and file systems In the past, tape performance was typically identified as a bottleneck. However, tape performance has now surpassed many of the source systems available today. Items to take into account when calculating desired throughput and performance metrics are: Source hardware (disk subsystems) Source filesystem status It is essential that the hardware you use for disk or online storage be able to adequately provide data for the application online along with the backup application and tape devices. In environments deploying large tape subsystems using HP StorageWorks ESL/EML E-Series Libraries and Ultrium LTO tape drives, disk subsystems become an increasingly important performance component. One ESL712e with 24 Ultrium 1840 tape drives can easily maintain 2.4 GBps (native) of total system throughput. In this scenario, HP recommends that your disk subsystems be able to maintain a 2:1 ratio of disk-to-tape throughput. That would be approximately 4.8 GBps of disk I/O required to stream data to one cabinet ESL712e tape library. The impact of file systems on backup performance can be significant. Highly fragmented systems only allow disk and tape subsystems to run at a fraction of stated or desired performance. Tape drive The tape drive is the final factor in determining backup and restore performance. HP tape drives have varying levels of performance. Characteristics such as file size (larger is better), directory depth, and data compressibility all affect system performance. Data interleaving during backup also affects restore performance. Use of the router and its connections to HP StorageWorks tape libraries is a simple way to scale backup performance. Enterprise Backup Solution with Tivoli Storage Manager implementation guide 17 Table 3 shows performance information for various tape drives. Table 3 Tape drive throughput speed (native) Throughput MB/s 120 80 60 30 24 15 16 16 11 6 Tape Drive Ultrium 1840 Ultrium 960 Ultrium 920 Half-Height Ultrium 460 Ultrium 448 Half-Height Ultrium 230 Ultrium 232 Half-Height SDLT 160/320 SDLT 110/220 GB DLT8000 40/80 GB NOTE: The calculated native performance is provided by the drive vendor and may not be achievable by some configurations. HP StorageWorks Virtual Library Systems The Virtual Library System (VLS) provides virtual tape for EBS environments by seamlessly integrating into existing data protection processes to provide improved performance, reliability, and flexibility. These disk-based storage solutions provide both unattended backup and rapid restores of data for SAN-based servers. IMPORTANT: When configured with the HP VLS, Tivoli Storage Manager recognizes an emulated library as if it were a physical tape library. NOTE: Since an emulated library does not have a physical entry/exit port, the CHECKIN and CHECKOUT LIBVOLUME commands from BULK are not supported. 18 Installation and configuration Tivoli Storage Manager server/client performance There are a multitude of settings available in the Tivoli Storage Manager server options file that make Tivoli Storage Manager very configurable in a wide variety of environments. However, there are a few key recommended settings that should be employed to improve performance with backup and restore to tape. See the Tivoli Storage Manager Performance Tuning Guide for more information on server and client performance. Add the following settings to each Tivoli Storage Manager server's dsmserv.opt file or storage agent's dsmsta.opt: TCPNODELAY YES (default) TCPWINDOWSIZE 63 (default) BUFPOOLSIZE 32768 (default) TXNGROUPMAX 256 (default) EXPINTERVAL 0 (default=24) SELFTUNEBUFPOOLSIZE NO (default) MOVEBATCHSIZE 1000 (default) MOVESIZETHRESH 2048 (default) LOGPOOLSIZE 2048 to 8192 (default=512) NOTE: When setting EXPINTERNAL to 0, be sure to use an administrative schedule to execute expiration at an appropriate time each day. A value of 0 means the expiration must be started with the EXPIre Inventory command. See the TSM Administrator's Reference Guide for the appropriate operating system. In addition, these settings are recommended for each backup-archive client's dsm.sys file, or in the case of Windows, the dsm.opt file: TCPBUFFSIZE 32 (default) TCPNODELAY YES (default) TCPWINDOWSIZE 63 (default) LARGECOMMBUFFERS YES (default=no) TXNBYTELIMIT 2097152 (for backup to tape only) These settings have been tested and verified on all EBSsupported platforms. However, there may be additional factors that might require further adjustments of these variables. See the Tivoli Storage Manager Performance and Tuning Guide for more information, available on the IBM support web site: http://www.ibm.com/software/sysmgmt/products/support/ibmtivolistoragemanager.html Search on performance tuning guide and check the Learn (Manuals, White papers, etc.) limit search box. Enterprise Backup Solution with Tivoli Storage Manager implementation guide 19 Encryption HP StorageWorks Secure Key Manager The Secure Key Manager is a hardened server appliance providing centralized key management for HP LTO4 enterprise tape drives. The Secure Key Manager automates key generation and management based on security policies for multiple libraries; this occurs transparent to Tivoli Storage Manager. Additionally, the Secure Key Manager provides reliable lifetime key archival with automatic multi-site key replication, high availability clustering, and failover capabilities. Please refer to the HP StorageWorks Secure Key Manager users guide at http://www.hp. com/go/tape for further assistance in setting up the HP StorageWorks Secure Key Manager. Best practices with Tivoli Storage Manager Tivoli Storage Manager supports HP LTO4 tape drive encryption with version 5.4.2 or later. Tivoli Storage Manager can provide key management directly to the drives itself, or use an external key management appliance like the HP Secure Key Manager to perform key management. Use the command DEFine DEVclass and the parameter DRIVEEncryption to determine how key management is provided. To allow the Secure Key Manager to manage keys, set DRIVEEncryption to ALLOW. To specify that Tivoli Storage Manager provides application key management, set DRIVEEncryption to ON. For additional HP LTO4 drive encryption support details, go to: http://www.ibm. com/software/sysmgmt/products/support/ibmtivolistoragemanager.html Click on the appropriate supported devices link and select the LTO tape drives device class. NOTE: To reuse tapes that are encrypted when the key is no longer available, use the LABEL LIBVolume command to recycle the media. You're reading an excerpt. L&TT provides functionality for firmware downloads, verification of device operation, maintenance procedures, failure analysis, corrective service actions, and some utility functions. NOTE: Tivoli Storage Manager device drivers may need to be uninstalled if tape and robot devices do not appear as expected within LT&T. @@@@@@@@Update the client node with the proper policy domain name on the Tivoli Storage Manager server. Verify that all drives are online and that all tape paths are online. Ensure that tape paths have been set up for each drive. Ensure that each library client has a sufficient number of tape paths assigned to it. Verify that the password information on the library manager for the library client is correct. Verify that the password information on the library client for the library manager is correct. Verify proper communication by running the UPDATE SERVER command with the FORCESYNC=YES option. Assign the library to the appropriate device class using either the UPDATE DEVCLASS command or the Tivoli Storage Manager administrative interface. Assign the device class to the appropriate storage pool using either the UPDATE STGPOOL command or the Tivoli Storage Manager administrative interface. Assign the storage pool to the appropriate backup copy group using either the UPDATE COPYGROUP command or the Tivoli Storage Manager administrative interface. Activate the policy when the update is completed. Enterprise Backup Solution with Tivoli Storage Manager implementation guide 23 Table 5 Issue Tape paths cannot be assigned on library manager Possible solution Native OS device files/drivers cannot be used with HP libraries. Create device files in UNIX/Linux with the Tivoli Storage Manager device driver. Assign the Tivoli Storage Manager device driver to tape devices in Windows. See the Tivoli Storage Manager Administrator's Guide for more information. Verify the actual device file in each tape drive path and that the drive's element number is correct. Occasionally, SAN devices can be presented in a different order on a library client than from the order on a library manager. Verify the device serial numbers that correspond with the Tivoli Storage Manager device files on the library client, and match them up with the drive order on the library manager. Tivoli Storage Manager device files have not been created Tapes are loaded into wrong drives; server is unable to open drives Serial number mismatch between device files on library manager and library client Tivoli Storage Manager Troubleshooting Utilities The lbtest and mttest utilities in the Tivoli Storage Manager devices folder on Windows (or the {Tivoli Storage Manager home directory}/devices/bin directory on UNIX/Linux) can be helpful in diagnosing usage problems with the library robot or drives in a SAN configuration. These utilities operate at the SCSI command level to test and verify device functionality. The utilities should never be used while the library is in operation, as backup/restore jobs will fail. NOTE: The mttest utility requires that a tape be loaded in the tape drive.
