1 Overview Exponential growth of information has led to an enormous volume of data stored across enterprise networks. IT organizations are finding that backing up and restoring data is becoming more and more challenging. HP customers using Microsoft Windows NT /, Novell NetWare, Tru64 UNIX, IBM AIX, HP-UX, LINUX, or Sun Solaris servers need a scalable, high-performance solution to meet their present and future data storage backup and restoration requirements. The Enterprise Backup Solution () provides a unique solution to the backup dilemma by providing a consolidated backup of multiple servers over a high speed, independent storage network to centrally attached SCSI tape libraries. HP has segmented to fit two market segments: low-cost entry level SANs, and high-performance SANs in heterogeneous environments. The StorageWorks family segmentation will help provide customers a quick understanding of which solution is right for their needs. Customer Benefits The DAS scenario gives you two very distinct options from which to choose. To provide superior data protection for workgroups and departments, you can design a DAS configuration where multiple servers share a large tape library device through the existing network. For easier management, a single backup server handles the backup and restore processes. As a result, you get the benefit of an automated solution that reduces human error. To protect data for individual workstations and small workgroups, you can simply connect a stand-alone tape drive, tape library or autoloader to your server appliance. This cost-effective method provides the server fast backup speeds and exclusive use of devices. Plus, when your storage needs change, you can scale this DAS configuration to a higher capacity solution. In both cases your investment in Hewlett-Packard equipment is protected because we have already anticipated and tested your upgrade paths. These paths lead to greater capacity and automation and when you decide to migrate to the SAN your devices move you. Also, because we've certified leading ISV backup applications, you don't have to spend time and money re-training your staff. Dantz has come into our Data Protection Self-Certification Lab and successfully certified their new Retrospect 6.0 our direct attach devices. This includes our newest drives the SDLT160/320 and the VS80. The two newest drives available are the SDLT160/320 and the VS80. These are both support a variety of operating systems and ISVs. for Low-Cost Entry for low-cost entry level SANs is a data protection solution for ProLiant from the Level SANs new HP or x86 servers in Windows NT/ and NetWare environments. This offering provides a data protection solution that helps shrink backup windows and reduce management costs for customers. for low-cost entry level SANs provides the option of configuring a backup solution either a hub, or a Arbitrated Loop switch. Using a FC Arbitrated Loop switch allows AIT, SDLT, or DLT libraries to be consolidated the ra4100 on the same Storage Area Network (SAN), driving disk and tape consolidation. The StorageWorks msa1000 is now certified in this segment including OS support for Windows NT/. Special features offered by HP in this segment include support for the SAN Access Module for the Smart Array Controller Designed, tested, and qualified for ProLiant servers, the SAN Access Module bridges today's direct attach storage into the Storage Area Network. This module offers a unique value in today's IT environment. The SAN Access Module for the Smart Array 5302 Controller is certified on FC-AL Hub 7 and Hub 12 as well as FC-AL Switch 8 and Switch 11 for Storage Area Networks. HP SAN technology grants users of existing SCSI based storage the opportunity to implement a basic SAN for the consolidation of backup operations. 2 Overview for High Performance Heterogeneous SANs Legato NetWorker has now been added to the Data Protection Suites. Omniback now supports Storageworks tape solutions. Omniback automates data protection and media management, eliminating backup windows. It offers Instant Recovery to eliminate recovery windows, while maximizing staff and infrastructure efficiency. Omniback provides the scalable product coverage for a broad range of platforms and applications. The MDR comes in two models. The original model (1x2) has a single connection and two SCSI ports supporting up to four DLT or AIT tape drives per controller. An optional card allows four more tape drives to be supported for a maximum of eight drives supported by a single controller. The dual-connector SCSI channels support the DLT Library Model 35/70, TL891/TL891DLX, TL895, MSL5026DLX/SL, ESL9198DLX/ESL9198SL, ESL9326D/ESL9326DX/ESL9326SL and AIT-based SSL2020TL tape libraries. The MDR (part no B21) has a dual connection and four SCSI ports (2x4) supporting up to eight DLT or AIT tape drives per controller. An optional card allows eight more tape drives to be supported for a maximum of 16 drives supported by a single controller. The Modular Data Router includes a rack mount kit. For maximum performance it is recommended that two SDLT drives be connected to each SCSI bus on the MDR. For a fully populated ESL9326, two 2x8 MDRs are recommended. 15 Interconnects HP StorageWorks Network Storage Router e2400 (NSR e2400) Network Storage Router (NSR) The new Network Storage Router e2400 is a key component in a complete data protection solution. It is an embedded option for the ESL9000 family of libraries. The e2400 Base SKU includes a cpci card cage and two -to-scsi router cards one 1 Gb or 2 Gb port and two SCSI (LVD/SE) ports. The e2400 Upgrade SKU contains two router cards that can also be installed in the card cage, allowing customers to upgrade the number of drives in the library connected to the SAN. The embedded routers are for customers who want to save on rack space by implementing their to SCSI router inside the library. By connecting tape libraries to the SAN backup windows are up to five times faster reducing the downtime of business operations. Customers can also take advantage of serverless backup support, 1 Gb or 2 Gb support and the web based management.
