1 Overview Introduction This guide is designed for system administrators who are familiar with the configuration and operation of Microsoft Windows, Microsoft System Center Operations Manager, Microsoft System Center Virtual Machine Manager 2008, and HP Insight Management Agents. Because of the potential risk of data loss, only individuals who are experienced with using this software should implement the procedures described in this guide. Complete information on supported hardware and software is included in the Microsoft System Center support matrix. For links to the support matrix and other product documentation, see Related information (page 21). IMPORTANT: The HP ProLiant PRO Management Pack is not intended to manage the basic health of ProLiant servers or HP Storage products. For information on HP Management Packs for ProLiant Server and HP Storage products, see Related information (page 21). The HP ProLiant PRO Management Pack utilizes the Performance and Resource Optimization (PRO) feature in Microsoft System Center Virtual Machine Manager 2008 (SCVMM). The PRO feature in SCVMM enables you to automate virtual machine migration triggered by certain hardware events from a server hosting virtual machines. The HP ProLiant PRO Management Pack is a single management pack containing all the necessary functional modules. Microsoft refers to this management pack as a PRO Enabled Management Pack. The HP ProLiant PRO Management Pack contains a similar set of modules that Microsoft designed for its PRO management pack. Configuration and operations are very similar between the two PRO management packs. Product operation The HP ProLiant PRO Management Pack does the following: Monitors HP ProLiant Hyper-V hosts to alert prefailed or warned events as PRO tips. Provides a set of predefined monitors and easily enables them as PRO settings from the management console. Migrates all running virtual machines in the prefailed server host to the available hosts within the cluster or host group. Provides interactive virtual machine migration after confirming the PRO Tip message. Provides automatic virtual machine migration as a PRO Tip alerts option. Supports HP Insight Management Agents. Supports Windows Server 2008 x64 and Windows Server 2008 R2 with Hyper-V (including Server Core). For more information on operating system support, see Related information (page 21). Supports failover clusters with HP Fibre Channel/iSCSI SAN for critical and warning events Supports non-cluster local storage servers for warning events only. 4 Overview
2 Using the HP ProLiant PRO Management Pack This chapter includes information on using the HP ProLiant PRO Management Pack. Operating with the PRO Tip dialog box The HP ProLiant PRO Management Pack monitors Hyper-V hosts for hardware-related events. A PRO Tip screen appears when one of the monitors in the HP ProLiant PRO Management Pack detects a hardware event. Initially, the PRO Tip reports the alert data copied from Operations Manager and displays the information in the SCVMM console. The initial PRO Tip screen data includes: Name Monitor name Description Original NT event message of hardware events from HP Insight Management Agents Summary, Cause, and Resolution The text for each of these fields is sourced from the Specific Monitor Rule Knowledge Base. After a short period, the diagnostic script reports updated data to the PRO Tip fields as follows: Name: no update Description: no update Summary: Updated by the diagnostic script only if the PRO Tip can operate successfully. Cause: no update Resolution: no update View Script: Show implementation script source. (You cannot edit the script.) More Information: Appears if the PRO Tip can operate successfully, or displays an error message if an error occurs for PRO Tip. Implementing virtual machine migration You can implement virtual machine migration from the PRO Tip dialog box. To implement virtual machine migration, select Implement at the bottom of the PRO Tip dialog box. If the Automatically implement PRO Tip option is selected on the PRO Properties, the PRO Tip dialog box disappears after completing the migration process by the HP ProLiant PRO Management Pack. You can check the progress of implementation at the Jobs pane on the management console. The implementation process migrates all SCVMM running virtual machines from the failed host to the most available host through the SCVMM placement algorithm. The implementation PowerShell script recalculates the host rating from the SCVMM server at every virtual machine migration to distribute virtual machines to multiple hosts. The PowerShell script in the HP ProLiant PRO Management Pack uses the following migration criteria: Migrates virtual machines inside a failover cluster using intra-cluster migration. Migrates virtual machines inside a host group on a LAN using network migration if the host is not inside a failover cluster and the monitor reports the warning level. Reports a failure if the host is not inside a failover cluster and the monitor reports the critical level. A network migration requires significant system resources and time period to run. A critical state might require the server to immediately shut down, disrupting the virtual machine migration and possibly leaving the servers in an indeterminate state. However, this setting Operating with the PRO Tip dialog box 5
can be adjusted by overriding the monitor on the management console. For more information, see Overriding a monitor (page 6). Migrates one virtual machine at a time and recalculates the host rating from the SCVMM server. After successfully migrating all running virtual machines from the failed host, the This host is available for placement option on the Status tab of the Properties view of host on the management console for the failed host is deselected. After repairing the hardware, select This host is available for placement for future migration operation. Overriding a monitor A monitor can be overridden to change the virtual machine move mode, such as QuickMove or LANMove. QuickMove is restricted to cluster-based hosts and is designed for use in critical state situations. To change the move mode, go to the Diagnostic and Recovery tab in the Properties view of the monitor, select Edit, and then override MoveMode to replace String (QuickMove or LANMove) for both the Diagnostic task and the Recovery task. Windows Server 2008 R2 Hyper-V servers support live migration of virtual machines. The VM is live migrated if the cluster-based hosts are configured with Windows Server 2008 R2 Hyper-V. The SCVMM automatically determines its live migration capability on the clustered host and selects live migration, if applicable. Dismissing a PRO Tip You can dismiss a PRO Tip if you want to ignore it. To dismiss and close the PRO Tip, select Dismiss at the bottom of the PRO Tip dialog box. The Dismiss operation closes an active PRO Tip without implementing a migration. The Dismiss operation does not reset the monitor to reactivate any future event monitoring. Future hardware events of the same type are not monitored unless you reset the monitor on the management console. Resetting the monitor To reset the monitor: 6 Using the HP ProLiant PRO Management Pack
1. Open the SCOM Management Console. HP PRO monitors and each monitor state can be found by using the Health Explorer from HP PRO Managed Host. 2. Right-click a Managed Host instance at the Managed Hosts view, and then select Health Explorer. Health Explorer displays the folder view for HP PRO monitors so you can find the outstanding monitor by its color. 3. Right-click a health monitor and select Reset Health. Working with failed conditions HP PRO Tip may report a failed state as soon as the diagnostic script is updated with the current configuration status of the virtual machine environment. The following types of errors may be reported: There is no running virtual machine on the failed host. There is a virtual machine on the failed host, but the VM properties option selected in the SCVMM console is Exclude virtual machine from PRO host-level actions. Operating with the PRO Tip dialog box 7
There is no available host to migrate the virtual machine from the failed host. The PRO Tip alert state is critical, but the host is not in a failover cluster environment. These conditions can be located in the Error section of the PRO Tip dialog box. Review the message and take the appropriate action. For more information, see Dismissing a PRO Tip (page 6). Using HP ProLiant PRO views The HP ProLiant PRO folder view in the SCOM console contains the following: Active Alerts view Displays active alerts that have generated any PRO Tip. These alerts on the management console are cleared after the PRO Tip state changes to closed. Managed Hosts view Displays the HP PRO Managed Host class instances with their states. SCVMM Managed Hosts view Displays Hyper-V PRO Managed Host class instances with their states. To view discovered managed hosts: 1. In the Monitoring pane of the management console, under HP ProLiant PRO, select Managed Hosts. 2. If properties such as SCVMM Object ID, SCVMM Type ID, PRO Recovery Level, PRO Monitoring Level, and SCVMM Server are empty, wait for the next discovery cycle of the SCVMM server, or initiate the SCVMM discovery cycle by opening an SCVMM PowerShell command prompt and running the following commands on the SCVMM server: Get-VMMServer SCVMM Server Name Set-VMMServer OpsMgrServer <OpsMgr Server Name> After the discovery cycle completes and PRO is enabled within SCVMM, a healthy state should be displayed for all managed host instances. 3. If a healthy state is not displayed, check the PRO setting. The PRO setting may not be enabled properly for the managed host. The state reflection within the SCOM Management Console may take several minutes to appear after the changed PRO setting. For more information, see the Microsoft System Center Virtual Machine Manager documentation. 8 Using the HP ProLiant PRO Management Pack
If one of the Hyper-V hosts does not appear in the Managed Hosts view, verify that the Microsoft SCVMM Management Pack has discovered the Hyper-V hosts by viewing the discovered Hyper-V hosts within the HP ProLiant PRO/SCVMM Managed Hosts view. If hosts are missing, see the Microsoft SCVMM documentation. HP ProLiant PRO Management Pack requires properly configured SCVMM and SCVMM management packs. Using HP ProLiant PRO views 9
3 More about the HP ProLiant PRO Management Pack This chapter provides more background information about the HP ProLiant PRO Management Pack. Product architecture The SCVMM PRO feature works within different types of servers as follows: Hyper-V managed node when a hardware pre-failure or warning condition occurs. Hyper-V managed node when virtual machine placement is available within a cluster or host group. Virtual Machine Manager 2008 server managing Hyper-V managed nodes. System Center Operations Manager server communicates with System Center Virtual Machine Manager 2008 via the SCVMM connector. Figure 1 (page 10) illustrates the data process steps. Figure 1 Monitor architecture 1. A monitor detects an event from HP Insight Management Agents. 2. The monitor generates an HP PRO alert. 3. SCVMM connector transfers the HP PRO alert to SCVMM and appears as a PRO Tip. 4. The monitor executes a diagnostic or recovery module, and then posts each as an NT event entry. 10 More about the HP ProLiant PRO Management Pack
5. The diagnostic or recovery event rule detects the NT event and runs a diagnostic or recovery script on the Operations Manager server. The script communicates with the SCVMM server. a. The Diagnostic script always runs to verify the current condition and update the PRO Tip message with its status. b. The Recovery script runs when automation is selected or the user selects Implement to perform an interactive migration. 6. The script requests the SCVMM server to perform the VM Migration. It selects a target host based on the SCVMM host rating and cluster availability. a. The script reports the migration progress to the SCVMM server as a PRO Tip status. b. The script generates NT Event messages to report the progress and status. HP PRO console tasks HP ProLiant PRO Management Pack provides console tasks that are enabled when an HP PRO Managed Host is discovered. The following figure shows the tasks available from the SCOM console when selecting an HP PRO Managed Host instance. Table 1 (page 11) describes the console tasks. For more information, see the Microsoft System Center Virtual Machine Manager documentation. Table 1 Console tasks Console task name Disable Placement Availability Disable PRO Setting Display Placement Availability Display PRO Setting Enable Placement Availability Set PRO:, Auto Description Disable the Host for Placement Availability. HP PRO monitors HP ProLiant PRO Management Pack provides the monitor rules listed in Table 2 (page 13). Rules are activated when the following conditions are met: HP PRO Managed Host is discovered. PRO is enabled to the host in a cluster group or host group with a specified or level. Each monitor is defined with a or level alert as shown in Table 2 (page 13). When one of the hardware event conditions is met, the HP PRO Managed Host class instance state changes to the specified error level, such as or. The error level does not necessarily match the error displayed with the HP ProLiant Server Management Pack for Microsoft System Center. The HP ProLiant PRO Management Pack uses a different workflow and different error levels than the HP ProLiant Server Management Pack. When a monitor generates an alert, you can find the corresponding alert at the top level of the Active Alerts view or HP ProLiant PRO/Active Alerts view within the management console. Icon Status Description The monitor found a hardware failure event on the host system. Hardware repair is required. HP ProLiant PRO Management Pack does not include monitors of severe events that require immediate operator intervention to possibly shut down the system. In this condition, virtual machine migration is not possible. The monitor found a hardware failure event on the host system. The host system might be able to continue hosting virtual machines for a while, but HP recommends hardware repair. 12 More about the HP ProLiant PRO Management Pack

5 Troubleshooting The following information is designed to help resolve some common operating issues that might occur when using HP ProLiant PRO Management Pack. The troubleshooting issues are organized into the following categories: Configuration issues (page 17) Virtual Machine Manager 2008 issues (page 18) Operations Manager issues (page 19) Configuration issues Monitoring hardware events The HP ProLiant PRO Management Pack only monitors hardware events reported in HP ProLiant servers. External HP storage devices and BladeSystem enclosures are not monitored by this management pack. To monitor BladeSystem enclosures separately, download the HP BladeSystem Management Pack. Supported hosts The HP ProLiant PRO Management Pack does not support Virtual Server 2005 and VMware hosts. Alert notifications repeat value displayed in Path, and Path and Source values appear to be swapped In alert notifications for devices managed by HP: The Source value indicates the entity that generated the alert, such as the HP Insight Management Agents. The Path value indicates the target server or device that is affected by the alert. The Path actual value is displayed twice, separated by a semicolon. Sample alert notification: Alert: HP Smart Array SAS/SATA Event Notification Service failed. Source: HP Insight Management Agents Path: bcalfe1b2cnet.mylab.net;bcalfe1b2cnet.mylab.net Last modified by: System Last modified time: 3/16/2011 5:01:02 PM Alert description: The HP Insight Management Agents have failed; the HP Smart Array SAS/SATA Event Notification service is not running. Discovery problem The HP ProLiant PRO Management Pack relies on multiple system infrastructures such as the Operations Manager server, Operations Manager health service, Virtual Machine Manager 2008 server, Virtual Machine Manager 2008 agents, and Virtual Machine Manager PRO Management Packs. If the configuration of any system is incorrect, the discovery process of the HP ProLiant PRO Management Pack might fail. The discovery process might be slow if you change a setting on any system. If you are in a non-production environment and need to speed up the discovery process, use the following example operation to test: 1. On the management console, locate the "Health Service" class instance to the managed host, and then execute "Flush Health Service State and Cache." This restarts the discovery process of all management packs on the managed host. Configuration issues 17
2. On the Operations Manager server, restart these three services: OpsMgr Health Service, OpsMgr SDK Service, and OpsMgr Config Service. This resets the Operation Manager domain configuration and redistributes all management packs to all managed hosts. 3. On the SCVMM console under administration modify the Operations Manager Root server. This reestablishes the connection to the Operations Manager server. 4. On the management console, clear the PRO setting on the host group or cluster once. After verification, a Job shows a completed update of the PRO setting. 5. Verify the PRO setting. This reestablishes the PRO setting. 6. If properties such as SCVMM Object ID, SCVMM Type ID, PRO Recovery Level, PRO Monitoring Level, and SCVMM Server are empty, wait for the next discovery cycle of the SCVMM server, or initiate the SCVMM discovery cycle by opening a SCVMM PowerShell command prompt and running the following commands: Get-VMMServer SCVMM Server Name Set-VMMServer OpsMgrServer <OpsMgr Server Name> After the Discovery cycle completes and PRO is enabled within SCVMM, a healthy state should be displayed for all of managed host instances. Virtual Machine Manager 2008 issues PRO Tip error There are several reasons you might not be able to see a PRO Tip alert even after the HP ProLiant Server Management Pack reports a hardware error alert. Operations Manager or Virtual Machine Manager 2008 has a configuration issue. For more information, see the Microsoft VMM documentation. The PRO setting was not applied to the host group or the cluster of the server. For information on how to configure the PRO setting and verify the proper setting, see the Microsoft VMM documentation. The PRO setting was properly applied, but the setting has not deployed to the Hyper-V managed node yet. For information on how to determine whether monitoring is properly activated, see the HP Insight Control for Microsoft System Center Installation and Configuration Guide. HP ProLiant Server Management Pack monitors hardware events that require you to resolve a hardware issue. HP ProLiant PRO Management Pack monitors events and alerts you when virtual machine migration is possible. For example, a hardware event that causes immediate system shutdown is not reported by this management pack because virtual machine migration is not possible. The Dismiss button closes an active PRO Tip without implementing a migration. The Dismiss operation does not reset the monitor to reactivate any future event monitoring. Future hardware events of the same type are not monitored unless you reset the monitor on the management console. For information on how to reset the monitor, see Resetting the monitor (page 6). The PRO Tip disappears when implementation fails in Auto Implementation Mode and the managed hosts turn into healthy state. 18 Troubleshooting
HP Console tasks operational and usage instructions Executing a PRO feature-enabled management pack console task may cause the SCVMM service to stop running. To avoid this problem, Microsoft hotfix patch KB must be installed. The hotfix can be downloaded from Operations Manager issues Duplicate alerts Duplicate alerts might result from HP ProLiant Server Management Pack and HP ProLiant PRO Management Pack. The two management packs are designed for different workflows and purposes. HP ProLiant Server Management Pack is for hardware fix alerting and HP ProLiant PRO Management Pack is for virtual machine migration suggestion alerting. All PRO alerts have the "HP PRO prefix. For example HP PRO: Processor Degraded. Operations Manager issues 19
