WELCOME TO POLITECNICO DI MILANO! Congratulations! You re now officially admitted to Politecnico di Milano! Our university was founded in 1863, and nowadays it scores as one of the best fifty technical universities in the world, the first among Italian schools. All you need to do now is plan your trip to Italy and take care of the last administrative requirements. In order to make the best out of your first week in Milan, we have organized a Welcome Week, in which we have concentrated all the things you should take care of upon your arrival. Introduction - How to use the guide & Summary TIPS TO READ THE GUIDE THE EVENT pg. 4 PROGRAMME pg. 18 ACTIVITIES pg. 28 The guide is divided into four sections: event (a focus on the welcome week), locations (where it takes place, and how to get there), programme (timetable of the week) and activities (focuses on what you will do). At the end of the guide you will also find some useful extra contents. Be sure to check campus and room you should reach every day. All events foresee the participation of students studying in both Milano Leonardo and Bovisa campuses and are free of charge. On some days Bovisa and Leonardo Students will be required to participate in specific events located in different campuses. It is compulsory to register to some of the special events. Please check and procede if you re interested! 2 This section is an introduction to the Welcome Week: it describes what it is, what you are going to do and the aim of the event. LOCATIONS pg. 8 This section presents the two campuses: Milano Bovisa and Milano Leonardo. You will find how to get there using public transports, and you will also have a map with the different rooms you ll have to go to during the week. A daily schedule of all events with a description. Be careful to check where you have to go. EXTRAS pg. 40 This section has informative boxes giving you an in-depth description of the most interesting activities. The Event - Welcome Week ABOUT THE WEEK Why should you take part in the Welcome Week? HAVE A LOOK AT SOME PICTURES OF THE PAST EDITION We have organized a Welcome Week from September 29 to October 2, in which we have concentrated all the things you should take care of upon on your arrival. Taking part in the Welcome Week is the best way to be supported in carrying out all administrative procedures necessary to complete official enrollment to Politecnico di Milano, apply for a residence permit and complete the yearly study plan. It is a way to learn about important services each student can take advantage of during his/her stay and to get to know students, professors, facilities and the city of Milan in a friendly and informal way. The Welcome Week and in particular the Final Event foresees a number of games and sports activities, a happy hour and live concert; all new international students enrolling in any of the Politecnico di Milano campuses will be there, from exchange to MSc Students. The student associations have contibuted to the organization of the Welcome Week, especially to the free time activities and final event. 6 All photos were taken by Polimi Photolab: they have realized a video of the week as well, look at it! 7

Locations - Leonardo Campus HOW TO GET TO LEONARDO CAMPUS 1 The historical buildings of Politecnico di Milano are located in Piazza Leonardo da Vinci 32. TUBE LINE M2 The tube stop is Piola on line 2. When you get off take the left-side exit and go straight on to via Villani then cross via Bonardi and you will be in Piazza Leonardo da Vinci. via Pascoli viale Romagna via Spinoza PIAZZALE PIOLA 3 1 via Pacini 2 3 TRAM 23-33 Take the tram 23 or 33 and stop in Piazza Leonardo da Vinci-Via Ampere, you will be in front of Politecnico. Locations - Leonardo Campus AULA DE DONATO Aula de Donato is located in Piazza Leonardo da Vinci 32 (see page 10). Enter the campus and go right, Aula de Donato is located in Building number 3, ground floor. AULE D To reach Aule D take M2 green line and get off at the stop Lambrate or take a train to Lambrate Station. Exit the station and walk straight on via Pacini, then turn left in via Grossich and go straight for 700 meters. You will find Aule D on your left at no. 40 in via Golgi. Locations - Bovisa Campus HOW TO GET TO BOVISA CAMPUS 1 The campus is located in Via Giovanni Durando 10, in a district called Bovisa, in the north of Milan. PASSANTE Take the passante ferroviario (railway station) blue line. The stop is Bovisa Politecnico. Exit the station and go left down the stairs, cross the parking lot and reach Via Andreoli. Go straight for 250 meters and you will have the campus in front of you. STUDESK Go straight on after having crossed the entrance in via Durando for 50 meters, you will have the office on your right. AULA DE CARLI EDIFICIO B8 CT 54 AULA DE CARLI Turn left after having crossed the entrance in Via Durando and go straight on, you ll find Aula de Carli in front of you. Activities - Integration Activities - Campus Bovisa Tour INTEGRA- TION How to face difficulties and problems BOVISA TOUR A tour around Bovisa Campus Tuesday, September 30th 10.00 aula de Donato Tuesday, September 30th 14.00 campus Bovisa As a newcomer, you will probably undergo considerable change in a number of key areas of your life simultaneously. Adapting to new situations requires much more time and energy than staying with what s familiar to us. The accumulation of many changes over a relatively short period leads to an accumulation of pressure, possibly triggering feelings of stress and even overwhelms. The aim of this workshop is to help you identify the tools you have to face the challenges a new situation can bring to you, together with the people who might share the same worries and doubts. The discussion of these topics will be held in an informal and light-hearted atmosphere. The tour will explore Bovisa Campus (Durando or La Masa, depending on where you will be studying), where you will discover the historical premises, together with the people, the events, the anecdotes and the inventions of the oldest university in Milan. A student will accompany you on this journey, narrating how life is today at Politecnico di Milano and which are the facilities and services this Campus has to offer. Activities - City Walking Tour CITY WALKING A tour of historical and entertainment locations Tuesday, September 30th 17.00 meeting: Castello Sforzesco registration is compulsory What a better way to get to know your city than taking a walking tour? Politecnico students will guide you through the streets and squares of the historical centre, showing you all the main attractions (Cattedrale del Duomo, Castello Sforzesco, Galleria Vittorio Emanuele, Teatro La Scala) and at the same time revealing you less known places which are worth a visit. During the tour you will share your first impressions of Milan and have fun with your new University mates. This is an easy way to know your new city and your new friends, so don t forget to register, join the event and have fun! 32 33
Activities - EXPO 2015 Activities - Campus Leonardo Tour EXPO 2015 Feeding the planet, energy for life LEONAR- DO TOUR A tour around Leonardo Campus Wednesday, October 1st 08.55 aula de Donato Wednesday, October 1st from 14.30 Thursday, October 2nd from 10.00 campus Leonardo EXPO 2015: Feeding the Planet, Energy for life is a universal exposition which will take place in Milan from May to October 2015. The event will host more than 130 participants: the expected 20 million visitors will be taken on a journey to explore food and traditions of populations from all over the world. This brief introduction to such a broad and complex exposition has the goal to help you understand how it is organized, which are the thematic clusters, where the events take place in the EXPO site but also throughout the city of Milan. The tour will explore Leonardo Campus (Piazza Leonardo da Vinci, Via Golgi, La Nave, Library), where you will discover the historical premises, together with the people, the events, the anecdotes and the inventions of the oldest university in Milan. A student will accompany you on this journey, narrating how life is today at Politecnico di Milano and which are the facilities and services this Campus has to offer. The event will be held in english. The guides will be leaving every half an hour from outside Aula de Donato with a group of maximum 20 students. 34 35
Activities - City Bus Tour CITY BUS TOUR A sightseeing tour on double decker bus Thursday, October 2nd 16.30 meeting Via Durando 10 registration is compulsory Take advantage of a great opportunity and join us in a beautiful tour of Milan on a double decker bus, the perfect way to explore the city and visit its most popular attractions and places of interest: Castello Sforzesco, Sant Ambrogio, Parco delle Basiliche and Leonardo s Navigli area, the coolest district of the city. You will be taken to the Duomo, Milan s most famous landmark, where you will see the Golden Madonnina perched on top of the tallest spire; then it will be the turn of Teatro La Scala. The commentary is available in several different languages to make sure you don t miss anything of this beautiful experience. 36 37
Activities - Final Event FINAL EVENT Games, Sports Activities and a Treasure Hunt Thursday, October 2nd 16.30 campus Bovisa registration is compulsory If you re planning to practice your favourite sport while studying at Politecnico don t miss the opportunity to be part of one of sporting teams. Here you can meet the students and coaches of football, volleyball, basketball and rugby teams and you can test yourself while playing with them. You only need to register through the online form and bring your sport clothes. If you re not interested in taking part in any sports activities but you would like to play and meet new friends you are welcome. Play table tennis, table soccer or sign up for the treasure hunt: look for clues with your team mates, challenge yourself with quizzes, blind taste tests and riddles, to win unique prizes! Take a tour of Polimi s vegetable garden, have a happy hour and dance to the rhythm of folk music! 38 39
