1. Purpose The purpose of this document is to annotate requirements for client computers accessing the Test Developers Studio (TDS) application. Configurations in this document include: Windows Java Runtime Environment Internet Explorer Microsoft Windows Macintosh Mac OS X Safari, Firefox Java Runtime Environment Each section in this document contains subsections for verifying the correct version of the component and instructions on how to upgrade the components if necessary. 2. Windows 2.1. Java Runtime Environment Java Runtime Environment is essential for operating TDS. The versions currently supported for TDS use are Java Runtime Environment 1.5 and 1.6. NOTE: If you are using Windows XP, Java Runtime Environment 1.6 and Windows XP Service pack 2 must be used. See Section 4.0 for checking you version of Windows XP. The following subsections contain specific instructions for checking the version of the Java Runtime Environment and upgrading the Java Runtime Environment. 2.1.1. Checking Java Runtime Environment Version Use the following steps to check the version the Java Runtime Environment: 1. From the Start menu, select [Settings][Control Panel] 2. Find the Java icon 3. Double click on the Java icon OR right click the mouse on Java Icon and select [Open] on the pop-up menu 4. Click on the [Java] Tab in the Java Control Panel Figure 1 Java Control Panel 5. Figure 2 Java Runtime Settings One or more version may appear in the Java Runtimes setting Window. Largest number in the version column of the table is the most current version of Java Runtime Environment being used. The version should be 1.5.x or greater for TDS. If your Java Runtime Environment requires an upgrade to version 1.5 or greater, please proceed to the next subsection; otherwise proceed to verifying your Internet Explorer version in section 3.0. 2.1.2. Upgrading the Java Runtime Environment To upgrade the Java Runtime Environment 1. Follow steps 1 through 4 from the previous section 2. Click on the [Update] Tab in the Java Control Panel Figure 3 Java Runtime Settings 3. Press the [Update Now] button in the Update tab of the Java Control Panel 4. Updates are Ready to Download icon on the Start menu bar Figure 4 Java Updates Ready for Download 5. Press the [Download] button on the Ready to Download screen Figure 5 Java Updates Ready for Download 6. Once the download is complete, the download button will change to state [Install]. Press the [Install] button on the Ready to Install screen 7. Follow the instructions accepting the defaults of the installation by pressing the [Next] button on the Java Setup window 8. When the installation has completed, a message stating You have successfully installed Java message should appear. Press the [Finish] button. The latest version of the Java Runtime Environment should be installed at this point. To verify the latest version, follow the steps annotated in the previous version. 2.2. Windows XP Browser Microsoft Internet Explorer is the primary browser used to access TDS. Other internet browsers may be used to access TDS. There are certain portions of TDS which require specific version of browsers to be used to operate correctly. The below table annotated the version of these internet browsers: Browser Version Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0 Netscape Navigator 7.2 Table 1 Internet Browsers The following subsections contain specific instructions for checking the version of Windows Internet Explorer and upgrading Internet Explorer. 2.2.1. Checking Internet Explorer Version Use the following steps to check the version Internet Explorer: 1. Start Internet Explorer. 2. From the [Help] menu, click on [About Internet Explorer] Figure 6 About Internet Explorer 3. As previously stated, the version of Internet Explorer should be 5.01 or greater. If your Internet Explorer requires an upgrade to version 5.01 or greater, please proceed to the next sub-section. 2.2.2. Upgrading Internet Explorer NOTE: If your computer internet browser configurations are controlled by company, please contact your computer support group to upgrade your browser. For those at Pearson, Internet Explorer 6 is the currently supported version. NOTE: If you are already running Windows XP Service Pack 2 (See Section 4.0), Internet Explorer 6 Service Pack 1 has already been installed as pat of the Windows XP Operating System. Use the following steps to upgrade Internet Explorer to the latest version: 1. Click the below link to activate Internet Explorer and redirect to the Internet Explorer 6 Service Pack 1 Download page. http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=1e1550cb-5e5d-48f5- b02b-20b602228de6&displaylang=en OR 2. Open Internet Explorer 3. Copy the above link 4. Paste the link into the address bar 5. Press Enter Copyright 2008 by NCS Pearson, Inc. All rights reserved. 6. Press the Download 7. Press the [Save] button Figure 7 Internet Explorer 6 Download Site 8. Select the location to save the ie6setup.exe file and press the [Save] button 9. After the download is complete, run the file by double selecting [Run] from the Start menu 10. Locate the saved ie6setup.exe file and press [Run] 11. Follow the instructions presented, accepting the defaults by pressing the [Next] button. 2.2.3. Upgrading Other Browsers NOTE: Consult your computer support group or your browser documentation to upgrade other internet browsers to currently supported versions. 2.3. Microsoft Windows Windows XP has been the primary operating system used in testing TDS. A problem has occurred with older versions of Windows XP and Java Runtime Environment Version 1.6. The current version of Windows XP supported is Version 2002, Service Pack 2. Below are specific instructions for checking the version of Windows XP and upgrading Windows XP. 2.3.1. Checking Windows Version Use the following steps to check the version of Windows XP: 1. Minimize all windows or use the Show Desk Top icon on the Start menu bar 2. Right click on the My Computer icon 3. Verify that the Version of Windows XP is Version 2002, Service Pack 2 as show in the following figure Copyright 2008 by NCS Pearson, Inc. All rights reserved. 2.3.2. 3. Macintosh 3.1. Apple Mac OS X Test Developer s Studio supports Mac OS X 10.3 and higher. Below are specific instructions for checking the version of Mac OS X and upgrading Mac OS X. 3.1.1. Checking Mac OS X Version Use the following steps to check the version of Mac OS X: 1. From the [Apple Menu] select [About this Mac]. 2. Verify that the version of Mac OS X is at least 10.3 as shown in the below figure. 3.1.2. If your computer operating system is below Mac OS X 10.3 you will need to obtain and install a copy of OS X 10.3. Please contact your local support group or visit Apple s website at http://www.apple.com/buy/ to learn about purchasing options. 1. From the [Apple Menu] select [Software Update]. 2. Mac OS X will automatically attempt to connect to Apple software update servers as indicated in the below figure. 3. Software Update will display any available software updates. 4. Follow the onscreen instructions to update you version of Mac OS X. Figure 10 Software Update 3.2. Mac OS X Browser Test Developer s Studio supports Mac OS X Safari and Mozilla Firefox browsers. There are certain portions of TDS which require specific version of browsers to be used to operate correctly. 3.2.1. Checking Safari Version Use the following steps to check the version of Apple Safari: 1. Start Safari. 2. From the [Safari Menu] select [About Safari]. 3. Verify that the version of Safari installed is at least 1.3.1 as indicated the below figure. 3.2.2. Upgrading Safari Figure 11 About Safari NOTE: If your computer internet browser configurations are controlled by company, please contact your computer support group to upgrade your browser. Updating Apple s Safari follows the same process as updating Mac OS X. Detailed instructions may be found in the following Apple support document: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106704. Use the following steps to upgrade Apple Safari to the latest version: 1. From the [Apple Menu] select [Software Update]. 2. Mac OS X will automatically attempt to connect to Apple software update servers as indicated in the below figure. 3. Software Update will display any available software updates. 4. Ensure that the Safari option is selected if available. 5. Follow the onscreen instructions to update you version of Safari. Figure 12 Software Update 3.2.3. Checking Mozilla Firefox for Mac OS X Use the following steps to check the version of Mozilla Firefox: 1. Start Mozilla Firefox. 2. From the [Firefox Menu] select [About Firefox]. 3. Upgrading Mozilla Firefox for Mac OS X NOTE: If your computer internet browser configurations are controlled by company, please contact your computer support group to upgrade your browser. Use the following steps to upgrade Mozilla Firefox to the latest version: 1. Visit the Mozilla Firefox website at the following location: http://www.mozilla.com/en- US/firefox/ 2. 3.4. Java Runtime Environment Java Runtime Environment is essential for operating TDS. The versions currently supported for TDS on the Mac OS X platform are Java 1.4.2_12 and higher. The following subsections contain specific instructions for checking the version of the Java Runtime Environment and upgrading the Java Runtime Environment. 3.4.1. Checking Java Runtime Environment Version Use the following steps to check the version the Java Runtime Environment: 1. With the Finder as the current application, select [Utilities] from the [Go] menu. Figure 16 Utilities 2. Locate the [Terminal] application and double-click to launch. 3. Updating Java for Mac OS X follows the same process as updating Mac OS X and Safari. Detailed instructions may be found in the following Apple support document: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106704. Use the following steps to upgrade Java for Mac OS X to the latest version: 6. From the [Apple Menu] select [Software Update]. 7. Mac OS X will automatically attempt to connect to Apple software update servers as indicated below in Figure 4. 8. Software Update will display any available software updates. 9.
