History of the Visiting Professorship Program Formerly called The Percy T. Phillips Visiting Professorship, the program was launched during the fall of 1980 and was co-sponsored until 2010 with the New York State Dental Association. The Visiting Professor is chosen each year based on nominations solicited by an Advisory Committee, which consists of Alumni and Faculty representatives as well as corporate partners. The event includes a keynote presentation by the Visiting Professor, focusing on the theme Health Issues of the Day. Two interactive seminars are held based on the program topic, including one presented by two fourth-year dental students who have been selected as the Student Scholars Advisory Committee Dr. Christian Stohler, Dean Dr. Ronnie Myers, Vice Dean for Administrative Affairs Dr. Ralph Kaslick, Chairman Columbia Visiting Professor Program Professor and Dean Emeritus, Fairleigh Dickinson University Dr. David A. However since not all data is information, healthcare providers, researchers, educators, administrators and patients are trying to make sense of this tremendous data trove. 10:30 to 11:30 a.m Student Scholar Presentations: Jeffrey Hajibandeh 14 Dental Diagnostic Codesthe Importance of Standardized Coding in the Digital Healthcare Era Faculty Mentor: Dr. Thanos Zavras Professor & Director, Oral Epidemiology & Biostatistics Imad Maleeh 14 Obstacles to the Utilization of Health Information Technology in Today s Private Dental Practices Faculty Mentor: Dr. Joseph McManus Associate Clinical Professor, Section of Social & Behavioral Sciences
Location: Afternoon Lecture Room 401, Hammer Health Sciences Center 12:00 to 1:15 p.m. Visiting Professor Lecture: Dr. Amit Acharya The Role of Health Informatics and Information Technology (HIIT) in Solving the Grand Challenges in Dentistry As healthcare in U.S. enters the era of accountability and moves towards achieving the Triple Aim, dental and craniofacial care should not be dismissed. The cost of providing dental care is a growing concern. Based on a projection from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, the total national expenditure for dental care will almost triple between 2000 and 2020. As electronic health records become more widespread, the feasibility of integrating medical and dental care, research and education is being explored by many healthcare organizations. The field of dental informatics can play a major role in facilitating the transformation of dentistry into the new era. This presentation will explore where dental informatics fits within the larger realm of the informatics world. An overview of the current changes to the healthcare delivery model and the evolution and impact of HIIT as they relate to some of the recent healthcare reforms will be explored The role of information technology in facilitating access to care issues, and the role of HIIT in solving the Triple Aim [Population Health, Patient Experience, Per Capita Cost] in Dentistry will be reviewed. 1:15 to 2:00 p.m Luncheon for lecture attendees, 4th Floor, Riverview Lounge This program is free of charge to faculty, students and alumni of all pre- and postdoctoral programs. RSVP for the Seminars and Visiting Professor Lecture at www.dental.columbia.edu/page/alumni-events For more information call 212-342-2964 or email mmw7@columbia.edu. 1 CE Credit will be awarded per session for a total of 3 CE Credits. is an ADA CERP recognized provider 11/2009-12/2013.
