ABOUT KPA The Korean Prosecutors Association (KPA) is a non-profit organization of Korean and Korean- American public prosecutors, formed for the purposes of networking, information-sharing, mentoring, and serving the community by providing information and education on matters concerning the public and public safety. KPA was formed on August 28, 2010 in Los Angeles, California. KPA is not only a domestic, but becoming rapidly an international organization. On May 21, 2011, at the First U.S.-Korea Criminal Law Forum, we established a formal tie with the Ministry of Justice of the Republic of Korea by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU). The heart of the MOU is to continually support each other through networking and informationsharing. In 2012, we have expanded our international membership to include the following prosecutorial agencies: Prosecution Service, the Ministry of Justice, the Republic of Korea. Canada - Ontario Ministry of the Attorney General, District of Sudbury, Ontario, and Regional Municipality of Durham, Ontario. The Commonwealth of Australia NSW (Sydney) - Commonwealth Director of Public Prosecution, and Burwood Prosecutors. The majority of our membership comes from Korean-American prosecutors in the United States of America. The following are represented agencies in the United States: Arizona Maricopa County Attorney s Office California Alameda County District Attorney s Office Fresno County District Attorney s Office Santa Clara County District Attorney s Office California Attorney General s Office (Los Angeles) California State Bar (Los Angeles) Los Angeles City Attorney s Office Los Angeles District Attorney s Office Orange County District Attorney s Office Pasadena City Prosecutor s Office Riverside County Attorney s Office Riverside County District Attorney s Office San Diego City Attorney s Office San Diego District Attorney s Office United States Attorney s Office - Central and Southern District of California Ventura County District Attorney s Office http://koreanpa.com and http://www.facebook.com/koreanprosecutorsassociation Page 2

We had prosecutors from across the United States and the representatives from the Ministry of Justice of the Republic of Korea. The conference was held at the Loyola School of Law, Los Angeles, California. The topics covered at the conference included: (1) Overview of the jury system; (2) U.S.- Korea future collaboration; (3) Prosecuting white-collar crime; and (4) Prosecuting domestic violence. The conference dinner was held at the Wilshire Grand Hotel in downtown Los Angeles, California. In all, we had over 100 people attended the conference. http://koreanpa.com and http://www.facebook.com/koreanprosecutorsassociation Page 3
One of the KPA goals is to promote our members. Steven Kim, King County Deputy District Attorney (WA), attended the first conference with his wife. Mr. Kim s interaction and networking with prosecutors from the Republic of Korea led to his one year paid fellowship at the Ministry of Justice of the Republic of Korea. Mr. Kim is currently in the Republic of Korea, researching and teaching Korean prosecutors about the American jury system. The Republic of Korea is experimenting with an advisory trial jury system, and is looking for guidance on how best to implement it in its current system. The King County District Attorney s Office has fully supported Mr. Kim s leave of absence to work in the Republic of Korea. Mr. Kim has done TV, radio and newspaper interviews in the United States and the Republic of Korea. Seattle TV news station has covered his story. See www.koreanpa.com for more information. Mr. Kim is becoming an instant celebrity. This all happened as a result of his attendance at our first annual conference and his membership with KPA. SECOND ANNUAL CRIMINAL LAW CONFERENCE KPA s Second Criminal Law Conference s theme is Uniting Prosecutors of Korean Descent throughout the World. We expect to have Korean prosecutors from the Republic of Korea, Canada, and the Commonwealth of Australia. Our panel discussions will include an overview of the criminal law systems in the aforementioned countries. To increase the significance of the conference, we expect to provide continuing legal education credits for Saturday s conference. We will have KPA members who possess knowledge and experience in the areas of topical seminars to provide keen insights into those subject matters. Although the conference is primarily designed for prosecutors, we will provide a limited number of seats for law enforcement officers, law students, and members of the public, including attorneys practicing non-criminal laws. We expect to have approximately 150 people in attendance throughout the conference. The budget for this year s conference is approximately $45,000. We have earmarked nearly half of the budget as scholarship funds. We expect to provide scholarships to 35 KPA members who are currently residing outside of the Los Angeles metropolitan area. It is expected that at least six KPA members will be flying in from outside the United States. The conference is free for all KPA members and those invited to attend. This year s conference will be funded entirely by corporate sponsorships. KPA is NOT a 501(C)(3) designated IRS charitable organization. Therefore, KPA cannot offer your sponsorship as a charitable donation. However, we are pleased to work with our promoter and supporter, Mr. Kyu Yang, CEO of Spectrum Korea. He is assisting us with coordinating the conference, including advertising and developing and print programs. We encourage you to purchase advertising space for our conference, via program book and KPA s website.
