Part of the old planes can still be flown and manoeuvred on an airstrip. The exhibition includes 17 planes. The special mission of the museum is to uphold the heritage of Fighter Squadron 34, which operated in Kymi during the war in 1943 44. The Kymi airfield was taken into use in August 1943, so the summer of 2013 will mark its 70th anniversary. The Czar relaxed at Langinkoski by fishing and chopping wood. The Czarina liked to prepare meals for her family. An imperial atmosphere still surrounds the fishing lodge and the area. The museum presents a permanent exhibition on the colourful history of the fortress city and various alternating exhibitions. The charming little red cottage holds an interesting display of package and paper products from the 20th century. The building was completed in 1841 and holds great cultural history value. Haukkavuori Lookout Tower Keskuskatu 51, Kotka 1 May 30 Sep Tue Sun, 1 Oct 30 Dec Thu Sun 10:30 am 6 pm The old water tower is located on the highest point of Kotkansaari Island. The tower s vantage point is 72 m above sea level and offers great views over Kotka and the archipelago. The tower hosts an Italian restaurant la Majacca and alternating art exhibitions.

Things to do and experience Pieces of spiritual history Southeast135 is a region with churches from different eras. Whether you long for a peaceful moment away from all the fuss or churches just spike your interest, you are sure to find a suitable church to visit. Almost all churches in the region also serve as road churches that are easy to pop in. Church of Saint Henry Harjuntie 11, Pyhtää parish village 1 Jun 31 Aug 11 am 4 pm (excl. 21 22 Jun) The church of Pyhtää was built in approximately 1460. Its original medieval exterior resembling most of Finnish medieval grey-stone churches has stayed almost intact. Orthodox Church of St Nicholas Isopuisto Park, Kotka 1 Jun 31 Aug Tue Fri 12 noon 3 pm, Sat Sun 12 noon 6 pm, guide available The Orthodox Church of St Nicholas was built between 1799 and 1801 as per drawings by architect Jakov Perrin and its architecture represents Russian neoclassicism. The church is the only building to survive the Crimean War. Church of Kotka Kirkkokatu 26, Kotka 1 Jun 31 Aug Sun Fri 12 noon 6 pm, guide available (21 22 Jun closed) The Neo-Gothic church was completed in 1898 and it was designed by architect Josef Stenbäck. The narrow tower of the red-brick church reaches a height of 54 metres. Church of Kymi Suntionkatu 18, Kotka 1 Jun 15 Aug Sun Fri 12 noon 6 pm, guide available (21 22 Jun closed) The church was completed in 1850 and it is a neoclassical and clean-lined empire building. It was consecrated as St John s Church in Midsummer of 1851. St Mary s Church Pikkuympyräkatu 36, Hamina St Mary s church is the oldest building in Kymenlaakso. The church holds little original artefacts and paintings since the church has been destroyed and rebuilt several times over. Organ Music Week Kotka Organ Music Week is arranged between 24 November and 1 December as the joint effort of the City of Kotka, Kotka Parish and Sibelius Academy. Lunch concerts are held during the summer. The baroque organ of the Church of Kotka represents the building tradition created by the German organ master Gottfried Silbermann. The organ with 44 registers follows the model of the main organ in the Freiberg Cathedral built by Silbermann in 1714. The church s organ was built by Urkurakentamo Martti Porthan Oy. Church of Miehikkälä Muurikkalantie 6, Miehikkälä 1 Jun 31 Aug Mon Thu 9 am 3 pm, Fri 9 am 1 pm The church was consecrated in November 1881. The exterior of the brick-built church combines Neo-Gothic architecture and other architectural styles of the late 19th century. The original organ made by Zachariassen Organ Factory still holds 10 original registers and the exterior. Church of Virolahti Kirkontie 500, Virolahti The wooden cruciform church was built in 1765 68 under the management of the famous church builder Tuomas Ragwaldinpoika Suikkanen from Ruokolahti. The church s ground plan is quite particular with the cross points narrowing towards their tip. Orthodox Church of St Peter and St Paul Raatihuoneentori 2, Hamina This Orthodox church, dedicated to apostles Peter and Paul, was built in the beginning of the 1830s along Raatihuoneentori Square. This round temple designed by Louis Visconti represents neoclassicism and Byzantine style.

Things to do and experience Surroundings pull you into an adventure Southeast135 is all about fascinating milieus and intriguing places. The range of areas worth exploring varies from distant history to present day and creations by the greatest architects of our time. You should definitely see the rare circular town plan in the city centre of Hamina or the Sunila residential area in Kotka by Alvar Aalto, for example. Circular town plan and fortress of Hamina Centre of Hamina An Italian Renaissance-time star-shaped fortress has served as a model for Hamina. The rare circular town plan was designed by Axel von Löwen in 1722 1723. The Town hall built in the 1798 is situated in the centre point. Finnish Wooden Boat Center and City port Tornatorintie 15, Kotka The architecturally interesting Wooden Boat Center upholds traditional wooden boat expertise in surroundings suited for its operations in the historic and culturally developing Kotka City Port. The boatyard building was designed by Lahdelma & Mahlamäki Architects. www.puuvenekeskus.fi Sunila by Alvar Aalto, 1937 1957 Sunila district, Kotka The Sunila pulp factory and residential area have been classified as a nationally important built cultural environment. The master plan by Aalto arranged the industrial community in the terrain and natural conditions in a unique way both socially and technically. Stockfors Mill Area Harjuntie 111, Pyhtää The historic Stockfors Mill area was created in 1902, when Ole Nerdrum and Olaf Bulow established the largest pulp mill in Finland at the time. The buildings in the area of great cultural history value will be utilised by local businesses. Art exhibitions and other events are arranged in the area during the summer. Sapokka Water Garden Kotka An award-winning park with magnificent water elements, inventive stone structures and great lighting in the evenings. All plants in the park are marked with name plates. One park after another Southeast135 hosts an abundance of unique and fascinating parks. They are not there just to please the eye, each and every one of them serves also as a recreational oasis providing diverse activities for visitors. Especially the centre of Kotka is rich in diverse parks. It is easy to walk the diverse routes in the city centre without stepping once away from park scenery. The Southeast has a lot of parks for the youngest family members and our four-legged friends to enjoy! Katariina Seaside Park Kotka The park is located by the sea and it offers activities ranging from a half-pipe to a labyrinth of reflection making it a top destination for outdoor recreation. Handsome stone tables tempt you to have a picnic while enjoying the outdoors. The park was awarded the 2012 ELCA International Trend Award and the Environmental Structure Award. Sculpture Promenade Kotka This promenade traverses the Kotkansaari Island and it is bordered by several sculptures and the sophisticated Sibelius Park. The little over two-kilometre long promenade that follows Keskuskatu offers plenty to see for those enjoying a nice walk. A dedicated map brochure is available from the Sculpture Park. Hamina Summer Park Hamina The park is located at the heart of the city in between the fortifications. The park is part of the significant cultural-historic fortress entity that the entire city centre of Hamina represents. Veli Saarinen Park Virolahti This park was designed by artist-academic Kain Tapper in honour of the Olympic winner Veli Saarinen. The focal point of the park is a wooden bridge that leads to a river island.

Movement comes naturally Southeast135 is about a range of activities within an arm s reach. You are just moments away from the rippling sea, freely flowing rivers and whispers of wild forests. The beauty of the waterways is dazzling and everyone is sure to find a destination to suit their preferred activity, be it hiking, fishing or bird watching. There are countless alternatives, from shooting the rapids at great speed to gentle walks and quiet appreciation of nature.

Salpapolku trail Salpapolku is a 50-kilometre long hiking trail in Virolahti and Miehikkälä. The trail traverses landscape typical of Southeast Finland, partly following the Salpa Line. You can experience the strong presence of Finnish military history along the trail by exploring the fortifications and museums. www.salpakeskus.fi Valkmusa National Park The Valkmusa National Park in Pyhtää is a fascinating destination regardless of the season. The area s 30 different bog types guarantee an abundance of birds and butterflies. The national park has 2.5 km of duckboard trail with an observation tower. www.luontoon.fi/valkmusa Santalahti nature trails Mussalo district in Kotka comprises two nature trails of about 2.5 km. One of them traverses virtually untouched forest terrain and the area s western shores. The shoreline trail takes you to the rocky southern shores of the Gulf of Finland. Portimo trails The most recent hiking trail called Portimo trails circles the villages on the northern side of Hamina. The network of paths is marked with blue spots in the forest and signposts at crossings. There is over 40 km of hiking trails. Southeast goes mobile! Gulf of Finland National Park The park comprises the outer archipelago of Pyhtää, Kotka, Hamina and Virolahti at a width of about 60 km. There is a shop, guest landing stage as well as a church and school built in the 19th century. The school building hosts art exhibitions and the Nature Information Hut of Metsähallitus in the summer. lehmäsaari Lehmäsaari is a popular island for outdoor activities. The lagoon-shaped boat shore is sheltered and several paths criss-cross the shores of the island. There are no services on the island, but it is a great place for having a picnic.
