DESCRIPCIÓN DEL CURSO En este curso, los estudiantes serán capaces de revisar, practicar y manejar estructuras gramaticales de mayor complejidad, como también enriquecerán su vocabulario con respecto a temas relacionados con el mundo académico. Los estudiantes practicarán las cuatro habilidades a un nivel de suficiencia. Habrá especial énfasis tanto en la precisión como en la fluidez. 3. GENERAL OBJECTIVE The students will be proficient in all the four language skills (Listening, Speaking, Reading, and Writing) and the use of language. 4. SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES 4.1. LISTENING/SPEAKING Students will be able to: a) Follow clearly articulated speech in everyday conversation b) Catch the main points in TV and radio programs c) Debate and dramatize d) Analyze and synthesize ideas e) Use academic/formal language when making a presentation f) Use proper intonation, stress and pronunciation g) Speculate about causes and consequences 1

METHODOLOGY The methodology is centered in the student with a communicative approach when dealing with themes that are up-to-date, academic and varied in tone. Both form and content of the language will be addresses in a balanced way. To accomplish this, all language skills are integrated. This communicative approach appeals to a greater variety of learning styles. Open ended opinion and inference exercises invite students to share and discuss their answers. In Information Gap, Fieldwork and Presentation activities, students must present and solicit information and opinions from their peers as well as their communities which reflects the idea of cooperative learning. 7. ASSESSMENT 7.1. EVALUATION ACTIVITIES Students will be evaluated by using some of the following activities: - oral work, - grammar and vocabulary exercises - group work - reading controls - homework - unit quizzes, - presentations - midterm oral and a written exam, - written production - a final oral and a final written exam. 3

GRADING SYSTEM In order to pass the course, students must obtain a minimum of 30/50 points. Grades are distributed as follows: Classwork 1: Homework, quizzes 10 points Midterm written exam 5 Midterm oral exam 5 Classwork 2: Homework, quizzes 10 Final written exam 10 Final oral exam 10 TOTAL 50 points Important note: If a student misses a quiz which forms part of the grade for class work or misses to hand in a piece of homework, it is up to the teacher to allow the student to take the quiz afterwards 4

or accept the homework. The grade for class work has to be handed in 7 days before the final exam. 7.4. ATTENDANCE AND TARDINESS Students are permitted up to TEN absences per course to pass with a minimum grade of 30/50. If a student is more than 10 minutes late, s/he is considered to be absent. If a student is absent from ELEVEN to TWENTY times, s/he has to obtain a minimum grade of 40 over 50 points to pass the course. 8.
