Audition Packet Billy Elliot The Musical Music by Elton John Book and Lyrics by Lee Hall AUDITION INFORMATION Director, Kelly Grussendorf Musical Director, Andy Kust Choreographer, Amber Burns AUDITIONS: Saturday, January 28 th, 10:00 AM 1:00 PM, singing (*sign up for 5 minute slot) CALLBACKS: Sunday, January 29 th, 12:00 PM 2:00 PM, youth callbacks (dance, read, sing) Sunday, January 29 th, 2:00 PM 6:00 PM, adult callbacks (read, dance, sing) Sign up for a 5 minute time slot for the Saturday singing auditions. Sign up sheet is available in the Playhouse lobby at the Depot or call the office for assistance (218) 733-7555 Auditions will be held at the Playhouse Conservatory (230 West Superior Street entrance on 3 rd Ave W between Superior and Michigan St) If you cannot make these auditions, contact Shad Olsen (phoffice@duluthplayhouse.org, 218-733-7555) to arrange another time. Bring a picture and resume. Sample picture resumes are available on our website (www.duluthplayhouse.org under Auditions tab). The Duluth Playhouse auditions are open to all actors and actresses, including those who may be auditioning for the first time and professional or Equity actors and actresses. WHAT TO PREPARE Please read the script if you are interested in a role. Scripts are available for rent ($5.00 deposit for 3-day rental) at the Playhouse Administrative Office in the main lobby of the Depot. For the singing audition on Saturday, January 28 th, please prepare 16 bars (about 30 seconds) of a musical theater song in the style of the show. An accompanist will be provided. Please bring sheet music in the correct key. For callbacks on Sunday, January 29 th, Come prepared to dance- (tap and ballet) and be prepared to read from the script if requested by Director.

Rehearsal and Performance Information Rehearsals begin the week of May 22 nd, Mondays Friday, 6:00 PM 10:00 PM. No rehearsal July 4 th or Memorial Day. Children will be released from rehearsal as early as possible until July 3 rd at which point they will be required to stay until 10:00 PM. Performance Dates: July 13-30, 2017 Wednesdays Saturdays, 7:30pm Sundays, 2:00pm Synopsis Synopsis and Character Breakdown Set in a northern English mining town against the background of the 1984 miners' strike, Billy Elliot is the inspirational story of a young boy's struggle against the odds to make his dream come true. Follow Billy's journey as he stumbles out of the boxing ring and into a ballet class, where he discovers a passion for dance that inspires his family and community... and changes his life forever. Character Breakdown The roles of Billy Elliot and Michael have been cast. Dad Billy's stoic father. A widowed miner struggling with maintaining a household in lieu of a work strike, he is still deeply scarred by the death of his wife. Billy's dancing initially sends him into a rage but he learns to support his son. Male Age: 35 to 45 Vocal range top: Eb4 Vocal range bottom: A2 Tony Billy's brother. A lazy but passionate miner. Hotheaded and scrappy with seemingly no regard or respect for his father, although he shares his disapproval of dance. Male Age: 18 to 25 Vocal range top: F4 Vocal range bottom: D3 Mrs. Wilkinson The local ballet teacher who eventually becomes Billy's mentor. Hardened and mouthy, she actually has capacity for caring when she sees promise in Billy. Believes in the power of personal expression through dance. Age: 40 to 50 Vocal range top: Bb5 Vocal range bottom: Gb3

Debbie Wilkinson/Ballerina The ballet teacher's daughter. A bit stand-offish and argumentative, her childhood crush on Billy leads her to constantly discourage him. Age: 9 to 12 Grandma Billy's eccentric grandmother. She is forgetful and a little aloof. Despite her inattention, she harbors a bitter resentment towards her dead abusive husband but has found solace through dance. Age: 60 to 75 Vocal range top: F#4 Vocal range bottom: F#3 10-12 miners to play various roles (Big Davey, George, Lesley, Posh Dad, Mr. Braithwaite, Mr. Wilkinson, Scab, Posh Dad, Pit Supervisor, Older Fancy Dancer, Police Officers, Royal Ballet School Members) Older Billy/Dancer/Miner Exceptional ballet and tap dancer to play Billy s older self. (Miner, Ensemble) Small Boy A street urchin that is often seen but rarely heard. Actor that can sing and dance. Age less important than stature. Tall Boy/Posh Boy (Kevin) Gets in a fight with Billy. Doubles as boy at the Royal Ballet. Woman 1/Dead Mum (Billy s Mom/Ensemble) Woman 2/Clipboard Woman (Woman at Ballet School/Ensemble) Woman 3/Lesley (A strike leader who organizes much of the picketing and other strike activities) 5 Ballet Girls Girls between the ages of 9-13. Ballet/tap dancers that can sing and act with the priority being acting. (Angela Robson, Tracey Atkinson, Keeley Gibson, Tina Harmer)
