Queensland State Council Profiles Name: Andrew Pegler Qld Council: President Current Portfolios: Vise Representative, Information Technology (Leader), Financial Assistance, Boarding Schools, Hostels, Travel, Distance Education, Small Schools, Special Needs, Post Compulsory, Teacher Education, Curriculum, Early Childhood and RREAP. Branch Member: Yaraka/Isisford Branch Mentor to: B/B/B, Channel Country, and Yaraka/Isisford. Background: Andrew was educated through the Primary Correspondence School and the Charleville School of the Air, before attending boarding school in Toowoomba for Years 7 10. After leaving school he worked in a variety of jobs in the Northern Territory, Queensland and Canada. Andrew with his partner Mary now own and operate a property which runs cattle, sheep and goats, as well as a water tank, water requisite supply and delivery business. His children received their primary education at a one teacher multi-level primary school. Andi-Claire is now at boarding school and Annie is an Emergency Nurse. Andrew served as a Local Government Councillor prior to the Isisford Shire Council being forcibly amalgamated in 2008. Andrew also enjoys riding motorbikes (having successfully completed the Finke Desert Race three times), reading and travel. Andrew was elected to Federal Council in 2002 and served as Federal Vice President from 2005-2009. In 2009, Andrew was elected to the position of Qld Vice President and in 2011 became President. He remains a passionate believer in, and advocate for a sustainable and viable future for rural and remote Australia.

Name: Lorraine McGinnis Qld Council: Immediate Past President Current Portfolios: Financial Assistance (Leader), Distance Education, Small Schools, Information Technology and RREAP. Branch Member: Mt Isa BOTA Branch Mentor to: Cairns Radio, Clermont, Eidsvold/Cracow and McKinlay. Background: Lorraine has lived in remote areas since 1980 where she began her teaching career in an Aboriginal community. She has two children and was their Home Tutor with the Mt Isa School of the Air for eleven years. Lorraine has been a Qld State Councillor since 2004, serving as State Publicity Officer for three years and Vice President for two years. She was elected to the position of President in 2008, stepping down in 2011 to be the Immediate Past President. Everything to do with education sparks Lorraine s interest, and she believes that ICPA has an integral part to play in securing quality educational opportunities for children living in rural and remote areas. Name: Wendy Hick Qld Council: Vice President Current Portfolios: Curriculum (Leader) and RREAP (Leader), Distance Education, Information Technology, Branch Member: Mt Isa BOTA Branch Mentor to: Cloncurry, Julia Creek, and Mt Isa BOTA. Background: Wendy lives with her husband on a cattle property at the bottom of the Gulf of Carpentaria. Wendy was Home Tutor for their two boys primary schooling with the assistance of the Mount Isa School of the Air. The boys are currently at boarding school. Wendy was Co-ordinator for the Mt Isa BOTA Sports For Bush Kids program for several years. Her other interests include reading (when there is time for a good book - but I can dream.), travel and history, and her family are also involved in country racing. Wendy was elected to State Council in 2010. She is also Qld State Council s RREAP (Rural and Remote Education Area Program which will replace PCAP at the end of 2011) Co-ordinator and Secretary for Mt Isa BOTA and was elected Vice President in 2011.

Name: Kim Hughes Qld Council: Vice President Current Portfolios: Distance Education (Leader), Special Needs, Information Technology and Curriculum. Branch Member: Richmond Branch Mentor to: Alpha, Capricornia BOTA, and Richmond. Background: Kim has lived with her husband and three children on Harrogate, a cattle property west of Richmond in north-west Qld for the past ten years. Her children are currently being educated through Charters Towers SDE. Kim became a member of ICPA seven years ago when her oldest daughter started year one. She has been publicity officer and is currently secretary for the Richmond branch. Kim was hooked after her first State Conference in Mt Isa, where she attended as a very green delegate for the Richmond branch in 2006. She got through the two day conference, managed to read out a motion or two and was very impressed by the lobby process and what branch members could achieve by taking their motions to State Conference. She realised that being a member of ICPA was more than fundraising and going to the AGM, it was about having the capacity and opportunity to make a difference to our children s education, regardless of geographical isolation. It all starts at branch level. Kim is proud to be a State Councillor and is inspired by what ICPA Qld Inc. has achieved since its formation, 40 years ago. Kim believes that there are so many speed bumps in the road to equality in education and the phrase never give up is very fitting for this organisation and the families they represent.. Name: Kate Twist Qld Council: Secretary Current Portfolios: Financial Assistance, Hostels, Post Compulsory. Branch Member: Mitchell/Tomoo Branch Mentor to: Arcadia Valley, Augathella, Dunkeld, Mitchell/Tomoo and Talwood. Kate educated three daughters through Distance Education from Pre-school to year 7, before sending them to boarding school in Brisbane. With one of her daughters entering university recently, Kate has experienced the challenges associated with rural and remote families accessing Tertiary education. Kate was elected to State Council in 2010 and became Secretary in 2011..

Name: Kim Donaldson Qld Council: Assistant Secretary Current Portfolios: Hostels (Leader), Travel, Distance Education, Information Technology and Early Childhood (Leader). Her children are the 4 th generation of her family to complete their primary schooling by distance education, and then move to boarding school for their secondary schooling. Kim was elected to State Council in 2008 and became Assistant Secretary in 2009. She is passionate about ensuring all children have as many educational opportunities as possible, available to them... Therese was elected to State Council in 2008 and accepted the position of Treasurer in 2010. Therese is also the Risk Management Officer...

Sue was their Home Tutor with the Longreach School of Distance Education for eight years. Her children also accessed their education through a one-teacher school, boarding school and later university and agricultural college. When time permits, Sue continues to work as a casual teacher at the Catholic Primary School in Longreach. Sue was elected to State Council in 2009. She was also the Convenor for the ICPA Federal Conference which was held in Longreach in 2009... Name: Deidre Williams Qld Council: Councillor Current Portfolios: Special Needs (Leader), Post Compulsory, RREAP and Boarding Schools. Branch Member: Charleville BOTA Branch Mentor to: A/B/C, Charleville, Charleville BOTA, Nebo, Quilpie, and Thargomindah. Background: Deirdre and her husband Kym live on a cattle property east of Wyandra, in south-west Queensland. She is also a Registered Nurse/Midwife. Deirdre has been a Home Tutor for ten years, commencing in 2001. Their three children received all their primary schooling from the Charleville School of Distance Education except for one year when they attended a one-teacher School at Wyandra, in 2008. Currently two of their children are at boarding school in Toowoomba. Deidre was elected to State Council in 2009 and has been a member of Charleville BOTA since 2002. Name: Emma Brodie Qld Council: Councillor Current Portfolios: Travel (Leader), Small Schools, Boarding Schools, and Post Compulsory. Branch Member: Winton Branch Mentor to: Clarke Creek, Roma, Taroom/Wandoan and Winton. Background: Growing up in Roma, Emma left to attend boarding school at St Margaret s in Brisbane in Year 10 to complete her education. On completion of three years nursing training at Princess Alexandra Hospital, she returned to work in the Roma district first at Injune Hospital and then in Roma. Emma married Tom Brodie and moved to Rostock, Yuleba, a property along the Condamine Highway, south of Yuleba. With a one teacher school on their door step at Yuleba Creek, Emma was part of the P&C (even before she had children) and often filled in as teacher s aide. In 1994, Tom and Emma, with their three sons, Harry, Jack and Charlie, moved to the Corfield District, north of Winton just before Harry was about to start school. A daughter, Susie, arrived in 1996, completing the family. All four children were taught through the Longreach School of Distance Education (LSDE) for their primary schooling the first six years with a governess and the last eight with Emma as their teacher. All attended Downlands College in Toowoomba for their secondary education. The three boys are now finished and Susie is currently in Year 10. Harry will shortly complete his electrician s apprenticeship, Jack is presently at home (at Knapdale) helping run the property and Charlie is a first year apprentice plumber. During Emma s association with LSDE she was a P&C member and secretary for four years and on the tourism committee and school council. Emma has been an ICPA Winton branch member since the family moved there, held the position of president for a few years, convened the 2009 ICPA conference in Winton and is presently branch Publicity Officer. She has been on several district committees, but has scaled down her volunteer commitments over the last few years to help Tom in their livestock agency business in Winton. So, why does Emma want to join state council? To be honest with you, my first motivation was - this could be fun! I ve been to a few conferences now and always find them really stimulating. I love being in the same room with so many enthusiastic and passionate advocates for our isolated kids. I want to be part of that passion, so here I am, joining council, so as I can join the fun!

Name: Caroline Green Qld Council: Councillor and Lone Member s Officer Current Portfolios: Boarding Schools (Leader), Post Compulsory, Lone Members (Leader) Branch Member: Clermont Branch Mentor to: Aramac/Muttaburra, Blackall, Nebo, & Springsure. Background: Caroline Green was born in Moree, NSW, in 1969 and grew up on a sheep and cattle property between Cunnamulla and Bourke. Caroline s father organised the first meeting in Cunnamulla in 1971 to form the ICPA Queensland branch. Her mother taught Caroline and her older sister by correspondence school from preschool to grade five. During this time they attended School of the Air through the Charleville Flying Doctor Service base. Caroline spent grades six and seven at Toowoomba Prep before completing her secondary education at Glennie and later Clayfield College. In the years following school, Caroline mainly worked in the rural industry. She did spend time doing other things and was a single mother for seven years, so she appreciates how busy life can get with kids, school and juggling three jobs. She has two girls, Abigail, 14, and Hannah, 12, who are boarders at the Rockhampton Girls Grammar School. During their primary years the girls attended a small, composite class school near Toowoomba. Caroline is familiar with the trials and tribulations of small schools, plus the benefits they bring. She is a member of the ICPA Clermont branch. Caroline and her partner, Angus, recently moved to Aramac to manage a Santa Gertrudis operation. When time permits, Caroline also volunteers for Ag-force as a rural champion. She is committed to helping those in the bush make it an easier and more attractive place to live and encouraging younger generations to stay in the bush. She looks forward to helping those who seek it through her role as the boarding school portfolio leader...

Name: Tammie Irons Qld Council: Councillor Current Portfolios: Small Schools (Leader), Early Childhood, Teacher Education, Curriculum and RREAP Branch Member: Westmar-Inglestone Branch Mentor to: Westmar-Inglestone, Moonie, Kindon, Condamine/Western Downs and Dawson Valley. Background: Tammie grew up in the Dawson Valley at Theodore on a cotton farm and attended the state school to Year 10, and boarded at Rockhampton Grammar School for Year 11 and 12. Tammie has lived with her husband Rob on their cattle and cropping property at Glenmorgan for nearly 8 years. Their children are currently attending Glenmorgan SS and Glenmorgan C&K Kindergarten. Tammie became a member of ICPA six years ago when her children began attending kindergarten. She has been publicity officer and is currently also Vice-President for the Westmar-Inglestone branch. Tammie attended her first conference in Charters Towers in 2010 and then Federal Conference in Darwin in 2011 and has continued to be thoroughly impressed with the professionalism and dedication of ICPA as a whole. She loves discussing ICPA with friends and family and encouraging anyone who is involved in education at any level to become a part of ICPA. Tammie acted in the role of Treasurer/Registrations Officer of the Convening Committee of the 2012 ICPA State Conference hosted in Goondiwindi and this only made her more passionate and intent on stepping up to State Council. She enjoyed learning even more about how ICPA works and interacts with government departments and was ecstatic to see the obvious respect for ICPA from the many representatives that attended. Tammie is proud to be a State Councillor and is keen to represent such a wonderful organisation which strives to facilitate equality in education for all students..
