You can expect to gain both depth and breadth of knowledge in your field of interest through our three-course curriculum that balances a substantial project in a core course with two supplementary courses that expose you to other aspects of the field. SUMMER WRITING PROGRAM July 5 24, 2015 The passion for writing and thinking critically at SWP is very motivating, and it s not competitive the teachers want you to improve. Study advanced reading selections in the humanities and social sciences. Sharpen reading and analytical skills in your core course while you participate in exciting discussions and learn new strategies for writing critically in your supplementary courses. LANGUAGE AND GLOBAL ISSUES SUMMER INSTITUTE July 5 24, 2015 Delve into intensive language study while exploring current global issues. Your confidence in speaking will dramatically increase as your secondlanguage skills improve. The supplementary courses will discuss challenges facing the global community. SUMMER QUANTITATIVE REASONING INSTITUTE July 12 31, 2015 Learn how to use quantitative data to both support your own arguments and evaluate others arguments. You ll design and complete a collaborative research project in your core course and present your findings using text, figures, and graphs at the research symposium at the end of the institute. CARLETON SUMMER SCIENCE INSTITUTE (Session A) July 12 31, 2015 (Session B) July 19 August 7, 2015 Don t just learn about science do science. You ll design a collaborative research project, gather your own data, and run experiments in your core course, culminating in a presentation at the research symposium at the end of the program. SUMMER COMPUTER SCIENCE INSTITUTE July 19 August 7, 2015 Go from theory to practice as you explore multiple areas within the field of computer science. You ll apply your systematic problem-solving skills and computer science knowledge to a real problem within a research group in your core course, and you ll demonstrate your solution at a symposium at the end of the institute. SUMMER HUMANITIES INSTITUTE July 26 August 14, 2015 Explore the legacies of Rome as you study advanced topics in history, English literature, and art history. In both your core and supplementary courses, you ll learn to use the tools and techniques of research, interpretation, and presentation that are essential to humanistic inquiry. WORK HARD. PLAY HARD. When you re not in class, there s plenty to do! Strike up a conversation in the dorm lounge with new friends who share your interests. Head to the Recreation Center to play racquetball, work out in the fitness center, or climb the rock wall. Explore Carleton s 880-acre arboretum. Join a game of Ultimate on the Bald Spot. Take field trips to the nearby Twin Cities and attend special events on campus like dances and campfires with the Carleton student staff.
