HIT 184: Basic ICD-9 CM Coding (3 Credits) Course Description An introduction to the basic coding guidelines using Volumes 1, 2, and 3 of the ICD-9-CM coding classification system. Students will practice the application of diagnosis and procedure codes validating coding accuracy using clinical information found in the health record. Ethical coding standards will be applied and promoted while adhering to current regulations and established guidelines in code assignment. Encoding systems and software with practice applications are included. Internet Access required. High speed Internet service is highly recommended. If students are unable to get high speed service, an alternate site may be needed to view some of the course components. Course Objectives Students will practice the fundamental steps in code assignment for diagnoses and procedures. Ethical coding standards will be presented. Web-based instruction.

Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to: 1. Classify coding and explain how healthcare facilities use coded data. (Unit 1) 2. Explain the content of the ICD-9-CM system. (Unit 1) 3. Apply guidelines in the use of brackets, parentheses, notes and symbols used in the Tabular List. (Unit 1) 4. Interpret principal diagnosis. (Unit 2) 5. Utilize the Hypertension and Neoplasm table in coding application. (Unit 3) 6. Apply codes for procedures using Volume III. (Unit 3) 7. Determine V codes for medical encounters, live born infants, and outcome of delivery. (Unit 3) 8. Practice using the Neoplasm Table in coding application. (Unit 4) 9. Translate what M codes signify. (Unit 4) 10. Determine codes for conditions of pregnancy, delivery, labor, puerperium and perinatal conditions. (Unit 5) 11. Practice E code and ICD-9-CM code application for fractures, burns, and injuries. (Unit 6) 12. Utilize the Table of Drugs and Chemicals to locate codes for poisonings and adverse effects. (unit 6) 13. Classify fraud, abuse, and compliance as it relates to coding. (Unit 7) Grading Homework assignments will be made, evaluated, and points assigned. All homework, quizzes, threaded discussions, and exams will be assigned a point value indicated at the beginning of the assignment. The instructor reserves the right to add, change, revise, or delete any part of a unit as necessary to accomplish the objectives of the course. Regular participation is expected and encouraged. Participation points will be awarded according to the student s demonstration of each of the learning objectives and domains presented. Participation in items such as Threaded Discussions, Student Lounge questions, and all other areas of the course will be taken into consideration when participation points are awarded at the end of the class. Late assignments, submitting assignments out of order, failure to submit assignments, unprofessional behavior, etc., will negatively impact participation points awarded at a minimum of one point and a maximum of ten points per participatory item. Homework assignments are allowed to be submitted only once unless otherwise indicated. All homework assignments, quizzes, and exams on the Ecollege site are scored automatically providing the student an immediate earned score. The instructor will verify any incorrectly computer scored answer in Ecollege and award the correct number of points earned. Please do not contact the instructor for verification of points earned until the instructor has had the opportunity to review the computer scored answers. The instructor will place her initials in the comments section of the Gradebook to indicate that a review of the computer scored answers has been completed. Grades will be determined as follows:

Homework assignments/participation/professionalism (Refer to AHIMA Domains and Cognitive/Professional/Behavioral Domains) 50%; 50% Final Exam A = 94-100 B = 86-93 C = 78-85 D = 70-77 Work Expectations Students should estimate approximately three hours of course work per credit per week for NDSCS classes. For example, a three-credit class may require approximately nine hours of work time a week for the student. This amount may vary by class and by student. Policies and Procedures NDSCS online students should be aware of various policies and procedures such as those shown below. Attendance - Students are expected to log into their online classes frequently during each week of the semester and to submit course work on time to meet due dates set by the instructors. Attendance and class participation is monitored and students not submitting work in their online classes may be dropped from the class. Review the Attendance Policy for further details. Computer Access - It is the student's responsibility to maintain access to a working computer and Internet connection to keep up in online class assignments. Because computer problems do occur, students should have a plan for alternative computer access in case of computer problems. Students will be able to access their online classes from any computer with an Internet connection. Refund Policy/Withdrawal Refund Schedule Academic Calendar - Online classes follow the same calendar as regular on-campus classes. They begin with the semester begins and students do not need to log in at specific days/times but instructors do set due dates for assignments and exams to be submitted so there is structure to the classes. Online classes are not self-paced but do provide flexibility in that they are accessible 24/7 to allow students to work around other commitments when doing their course work. Academic Integrity - Integrity is an NDSCS core value and there is an expectation that all students, as members of the college community, adhere to the highest levels of academic integrity. Dishonesty in class, laboratory, shop work or tests is regarded as a serious offense and is subject to disciplinary action by the instructor and dean of the respective division. Student-Instructor Communications While an online class is available 24 hours a day and offers greater flexibility for the student and instructor, keep in mind that your instructor will not be available 24 hours a day. I will check my email, voicemail, and Cyber Office messages on a regular basis, but there may be times when I am unavailable due to other commitments and job responsibilities. I will respond to email, voicemail, or Cyber Office messages as time allows. As a general rule, you can expect your direct question to be answered within 24 hours during week days. When sending an email, please include your full name so I know to whom I'm responding. Often, the email address does not indicate who is sending the message. Exams Exams are done online. Instructors may require a proctor be present for online exams. When the semester begins, check your course information for the proctor form and proctor criteria. Schedule Online classes follow the same academic calendar for start and end dates as regular oncampus classes. While there is no set time for students to be logged into a class each day, instructors do set due dates for assignments and exams. Students should lot into classes

frequently to keep up with announcements and to keep up with course work. Online classes are not self-paced. You may want to print the for NDSCS Academic Calendar reference during the year.
