Your Life Called. It Wants You Back. Duke Raleigh Orthopaedic and Spine Center

Duke Raleigh Orthopaedic and Spine Center A quick trip to the grocery store. A walk to the mailbox. A hug from a grandchild.

Celebrate the return of everyday living. The simple, everyday activities we all take for granted. That is, unless you ve ever suffered from joint, back or muscle pain or injury. At the Orthopaedic and Spine Center at Duke Raleigh Hospital, we understand how badly you want to return to the everyday pleasures of life. That s why we ve established a unique center that s entirely focused on getting you there as quickly as possible after surgery. What s so unique about the Orthopaedic and Spine Center? It starts with a system of care delivery that s seamlessly integrated. You ll receive support, guidance and encouragement every step of the way.

Where does it hurt? Not only does the Orthopaedic and Spine Center provide a full continuum of care; we also treat a full range of bone, muscle, joint and spine problems. SPINE We re home to some of the area s most accomplished spinal surgeons, and most advanced, specialized procedures. We treat a range of spinal problems, from degenerative conditions to injuries to tumor-related diseases. Many of our surgeons are experts in minimally invasive surgical procedures, which can enhance the total recovery process. HIP AND KNEE JOINT We perform hundreds of total joint replacements of the hip and knee annually, giving patients improved mobility, relief from pain, and in many cases, a new outlook on life. The surgery involves replacing an arthritic or damaged joint with a prosthetic, which works just like a natural joint. Duke Raleigh Hospital is the first hospital in the region to have been awarded special designations for hip and knee replacement care from the Joint Commission and Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina. Note: Designation as Blue Distinction Centers means these facilities overall experience and aggregate data met objective criteria established in collaboration with expert clinicians and leading professional organizations recommendations. Individual outcomes may vary. To find out which services are covered under your policy at any facilities, please call your local Blue Cross and/or Blue Shield Plan; and call your provider before making an appointment, to verify the most current information on its Network participation and Blue Distinction status. Neither Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association nor any of its Licensees are responsible for any damages, losses, or non-covered charges that may result from using Blue Distinction or other provider finder information or receiving care from a Blue Distinction or other provider. Joint replacement surgery has provided millions of people with years of pain-free living. Doctors, along with engineers and scientists, are continuously improving materials and surgical techniques to make the future even brighter for tomorrow s patients. HAND & WRIST Whether from repetitive motion or degenerative conditions, hand, wrist and upper extremity problems can be treated with a range of specialized procedures. Carpal tunnel syndrome, tennis elbow, sports injuries and trauma to the hand and wrist are just a few of the conditions that can be treated with surgery and/or therapy.

Come to the Orthopaedic and Spine Center and you ll experience a highly specialized and synchronized team approach to your care. Your doctor has advised surgery for your condition. What s next? At the Orthopaedic and Spine Center, we ll help set the process in motion and keep you on track until you re fully recovered. It starts with your Patient Navigator coordinating all behind-thescenes aspects of your care. Once your doctor schedules your surgery, your Patient Navigator will answer questions about what to expect before, during and after surgery, assist with scheduling pre-op testing, provide pre- and post-op teaching, and ensure that you receive excellent care. You ll never have to worry about forgetting a critical administrative or pre-operative detail. Whether your surgery will be performed on an outpatient or inpatient basis, you ll find we ve coordinated every aspect of your care. The Center coordinates all the departments that will play a role in your treatment, from anesthesia through rehabilitation. We even offer exclusive programs and facilities, such as our Homeward Bound Gym and Outpatient Rehabilitation, that are integrated into your care plan. Quite simply, the Orthopaedic and Spine Center provides almost every facet of care that you need in order to get back to everyday living. Patient Navigator Your patient navigator is here to help. Work. Play. Live. Better. It s the little things in life that make the difference. The same is true for your recovery. What sets the Orthopaedic and Spine Center apart from other orthopaedic facilities? We believe it s our attention to detail. And our efforts to make sure you receive every advantage in recovering fully. Whether it s preparing you properly with pre-operative education, providing an environment where you can grow stronger, or ensuring your care is in the hands of someone empowered to make a difference, the Orthopaedic and Spine Center never loses sight of the big picture or the small one. and out of an automobile. Kitchen and bathroom areas enable patients to practice the tasks of everyday living from opening cabinets to entering a tub or shower safely. The Homeward Bound Gym also provides an area for classroom instruction and stocks a range of helpful equipment, such as long-handled sponges and special reachers, that patients can take home with them. The Homeward Bound Gym is located in the Orthopaedic Unit on the third floor of the hospital. PRE-OPERATIVE ORTHOPAEDIC SURGERY CLASS Our surgeons expect that their patients attend a free, 1-hour pre-operative orthopaedic surgery class. The class covers what you can expect before, during and after surgery. We provide helpful information and useful tips, and you can meet your orthopaedic nurse, physical therapist, occupational therapist and case manager. The class is conducted weekly at the hospital and periodically in Wake Forest. OSTEOPOROSIS PREVENTION AND MANAGEMENT Fractures can happen in an instant. But in many cases, the underlying deterioration and weakening that can cause them occur over time. Osteoporosis prevention is key to preventing fractures and avoiding future surgeries. The Orthopaedic and Spine Center offers an interdisciplinary approach to managing osteoporosis, with an emphasis on nutrition, strength and fitness training, fall risk prevention and numerous forms of patient education. PAIN MANAGEMENT As a patient of the Orthopaedic and Spine Center, you ll also have access to our Pain Clinic. Here, pain management physicians and other professionals will determine and administer the best treatment options to relieve chronic pain from musculoskeletal conditions. In addition, physical therapists in the outpatient rehabilitation center offer holistic pain management therapies. COMPLEMENTARY THERAPIES Today, more and more people are interested in holistic approaches to improving and managing their health. The Orthopaedic and Spine Center offers a range of complementary therapies that may aid in your recovery and prevention of future problems. Among these therapies are exercise classes, nutrition and diet plans, general fitness programs, and stress management counselors to assist with emotional and lifestyle changes. Maintaining physical fitness under the care of trained health care professionals is key to improved outcomes. Our Wellness Center features certified exercise specialists, registered dietitians and highly skilled clinical nurses to help guide your fitness regimen. And unlike other large, high-intensity gyms and workout facilities, our Wellness Center operates on a smaller, family-oriented scale where you ll receive personalized attention.
