Science Task 3: Biotic and Abiotic Factors Materials and Item 1 Item 2 Item 3 Item 4 PAGE 17

Item 5 Item 6 Access Limitations N/A (Not Applicable) (Item 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6) PAGE 18

Science Task 3: Biotic and Abiotic Factors: Item 1 Incorrect Show (tell) me, which is a biotic (living) factor: (indicate each remaining option in the original order of presentation)? Say: We re going to talk about biotic and abiotic factors in ecosystems. Here is a chart we will use to sort biotic and abiotic factors (indicate the Biotic and Abiotic columns on the chart). Remember, biotic factors in an ecosystem are those parts that are living, and abiotic factors are the parts that are not living. Say: Show (tell) me, which is a biotic (living) factor: a rock (indicate the rock card), sunlight (indicate the sunlight card), or a plant (indicate the plant card)? Do: Allow the student to respond. PAGE 19

Say: The plant is a biotic factor. Let s put it in the biotic factor column. The sunlight and rock are abiotic factors, so let s put them in the abiotic column. Do: Assist the students in placing the plant in the Biotic column and the sunlight and rock in the Abiotc factor column. PAGE 20

Science Task 3: Biotic and Abiotic Factors: Item 2 Incorrect Show (tell) me, which is an abiotic (non-living) factor: (indicate each remaining option in the original order of presentation)? Say: Show (tell) me, which is an abiotic (non-living) factor: a fish (indicate the fish card), water (indicate the water card), or an insect (indicate the insect card)? Do: Allow the student to respond. Say: The water is an abiotic factor. Let s put it in the abiotic factor column. The fish and insect are biotic factors, so let s put them in the biotic column. Do: Assist the students in placing the water in the Abiotic column and the fish and insects in the Biotic factor column. PAGE 21

Science Task 3: Biotic and Abiotic Factors: Item 3 Incorrect Show (tell) me, which ecosystem has these biotic (living) and abiotic (non-living) factors: (indicate each remaining option in the original order of presentation)? Say: The biotic factors in the ecosystem are plants, fish, and insects (indicate the plant, fish, and insects in the Biotic column of the chart). The abiotic factors in the ecosystem are rocks, sunlight, and water (indicate the rock, sunlight, and water in the Abiotic column of the chart). Say: Show (tell) me, which ecosystem has these biotic (living) and abiotic (non-living) factors: a desert (indicate the desert card), a city (indicate the city card), or a lake (indicate the lake card)? PAGE 22

ScienceTask 3: Biotic and Abiotic Factors: Item 4 Incorrect Show (tell) me, which is a biotic (living) factor that can move: (indicate each remaining option in the original order of presentation)? Say: Show (tell) me, which is a biotic (living) factor that can move: a rabbit (indicate the rabbit card), a mushroom (indicate the mushroom card), or a river (indicate the river card)? Do: Allow the student to respond. Say: The rabbit is a biotic factor that can move. Let s put it in the biotic factor column. The mushroom is a biotic factor, but it cannot move. Let s put it in the biotic factor column with the rabbit. The river is an abiotic factor, so let s put the river in the abiotic column. Do: Assist the students in placing the rabbit and mushroom in the Biotic column and the river in the Abiotc factor column. PAGE 23

ScienceTask 3: Biotic and Abiotic Factors: Item 5 Incorrect Show (tell) me, which is an abiotic (non-living) factor in an ecosystem: (indicate each remaining option in the original order of presentation)? Say: Show (tell) me, which is an abiotic (non-living) factor in an ecosystem: trees (indicate the tree card), soil (indicate the soil card), or foxes (indicate the foxes card)? Do: Allow the student to respond. Say: The soil is an abiotic factor. Let s put it in the abiotic factor column. The tree and fox are biotic factors, so let s put them in the biotic factor column. Do: Assist the students in placing the soil in the Abiotic column and the tree and fox in the Biotic column. PAGE 24

Science Task 3: Biotic and Abiotic Factors: Item 6 Incorrect Show (tell) me, which ecosystem has these biotic (living) and abiotic (non-living) factors: (indicate each remaining option in the original order of presentation)? Say: The biotic factors in the ecosystem are rabbits, mushrooms, trees, and foxes (indicate the rabbit, mushroom, tree, and fox in the Biotic column of the chart). The abiotic factors in the ecosystem are a river and soil (indicate the river and soil in the Abiotic column of the chart). Say: Show (tell) me, which ecosystem has these biotic (living) and abiotic (non-living) factors: a forest (indicate the forest card), an ocean (indicate the ocean card), or a grassland (indicate the grassland card)? At the completion of the task say: We re finished talking about biotic and abiotic factors. PAGE 25
