Introduction Sony STR-DA2800ES/ DA5800ES Receiver Control4 Automation Activation Guide This document describes how to set up a Sony STR receiver as a Control4 controller in a Control4 system. The Sony STR-DA2800ES and DA5800ES receivers with full Control4 Automation activated result in an unmatched home entertainment experience, for both basic, universal remote and high-end installations. To unlock the full automation capability of the receivers, a Control4 Activation License (C4-SO-STR- Activate-E) is required. Supported Models/License ZSO-STRDA2800ES-C4 2800ES Receiver with ZSO-STRDA2800ES Control4 Activation License 2800ES Receiver ZSO-STRDA5800ES-C4 5800ES Receiver with ZSO-STRDA5800ES C4-SO-STR-Activate-E Control4 Activation License 5800ES Receiver Control4 Activation License (for Sony STR) CAUTION! Before you activate your Sony STR receiver to enable full Control4 Automation, read the Sony instruction and installation manuals in the receiver s box and the quick setup and safety instructions at www.control4. com in the Product pages to install the Sony receiver. Search for the Sony STR-DA2800ES or STR-DA5800ES products. Sony instruction manuals, marketing materials, protocol manuals, training materials, etc., are also available on the Control4 website. When combined with a Control4 Activation License, the receiver can be used as a Primary Controller running Director in a small, one-room homeautomation project, or as a Secondary Controller not running Director in a multi-controller Control4 system. Whether configured as a Primary or a Secondary Controller, when activated, the receiver s display will switch to the Control4 On-Screen Navigator. Furthermore, most of the functionality of a Control4 controller can be configured using Composer Pro*. A receiver only product is also available (see Configure as Receiver Only later in this document). Control4 System Requirements Receiver with Full Automation Activated (ZSO- STRDA2800ES-C4 or ZSO-STRDA5800ES-C4): Control4 Composer Pro software (OS 2.2.4 or later). Control4 Activation License assigned to the customer s my.control4.com account. USB ZigBee Wireless Adapter (also known as a ZigBee dongle - UWA-C4Z, included). Integrated receiver with Control4 automation. CAUTION! Before installing the Control4 Activation License or using the receiver, perform a Sony software update. To update go to the following UI page: Home > Settings > Network Update. The update may take up to 15 minutes please be patient. *For a list of limitations, see the Control4 Activation Instructions section in this document. 1

HDMI Zones The Sony STR receiver provides multiple HDMI zones: Sony STR-DA2800ES/ DA5800ES Receiver Control4 Automation Activation Guide Zone 1 HDMI A and HDMI B. Zone 2 Zone 3 (STR-DA5800ES only) HDMI output. Component Video over CAT5e with the use of a balun is supported on the STR-DA5800ES only. No video output supported; only audio. Sony s Out-of-the-Box Automation Sony STR Receiver without Full Automation Activated, Controlled by a Control4 Controller (ZSO-STRDA2800ES or ZSO-STRDA5800ES): Control4 Composer Pro software (OS 2.2.4 or later). Use the Online Database in Composer Pro to add the receiver s certified driver to the project. Follow the instructions in the Composer Pro User Guide to identify the receiver into the Control4 project. Box Contents Carefully unpack the contents from the box and make sure you have the items in this list: Sony STR receiver (DA2800ES or DA5800ES) Remote Control Power Cord USB ZigBee Wireless Adapter (UWA-C4Z, ZigBee dongle ) Speaker Calibration Measurement Mic Loop Antenna (DA5800ES only) Connector (F Type) Batteries (R6) Second Zone Remote Control Owner Registration Card Warranty Card Instruction Manual Installation Guide Software License Information The Sony Easy Setup wizard that displays on the TV by default when you power on the receiver the first time lets you select a display driver as well as various AV equipment drivers (DVD, Blu-ray, Cable box, satellite, etc.). Additionally, you can add Control4 Wireless Outlet Dimmers and Switches to the system. The basic automation available out of the box is controlled using the Sony IR remote and through the Sony UI (no Control4 On-Screen Navigator or Control4 remote compatibility is available out of the box). Likewise, the out-of-the-box automation can only be configured using Sony s Easy Setup wizard; Composer Pro configuration and programming is not available without a Control4 Activation License. If you plan to activate full Control4 home automation, then skip the Easy Setup wizard. After you select your language and accept the End User License Agreement and start the Easy Setup Wizard, then immediately select Finish to skip the Easy Setup wizard. This will take you to the Sony Home screen. Install the Receiver First, follow the instructions in the Sony documentation to install the Sony STR receiver (general steps below), and then follow the instructions in Control4 Activation Instructions. If any of these items is missing or damaged, please contact Sony immediately. If you have any problems with Control4 automation, contact Control4 Technical Support. In general: 1 Install the speakers. 2 Connect a TV to the receiver. 3 Install the receiver. 2

4 (Optional) Connect the other devices you d like to attach to the receiver (e.g., Blu-ray player, DVD player, etc.). See the Sony documentation for details. Control4 Activation Instructions Introduction This guide gives you instructions to activate full Control4 Automation on the Sony STR-DA5800ES and STR-DA5800ES receivers. Following these instructions will enable you to configure the receiver as either a Primary or Secondary Controller. Use the Control4 On-Screen Navigator Control an unlimited number of devices with a Control4 controller Configure and automate your project using Composer Pro. NOTES: (1) IP cameras are not supported. (2) Rhapsody is not supported if the Sony STR receiver is the Primary Controller, but is supported if the receiver is used as a Secondary Controller. (3) TuneIn radio is not supported on the Sony STR receiver when it is configured as the Primary Controller. If the Sony STR receiver is configured as the Secondary Controller, then TuneIn audio streamed from a Control4 HC controller can be played in the receiver s main zone. (4) You cannot control a serial device, for example, a Sony 777 disc changer or a seriallycontrolled security panel directly with the receiver; however, adding a Control4 I/O Extender to the project will allow you to control serial devices. (5) Online media played through the Sony STR receiver is only available in the receivers main zone. Likewise, any media streamed from a Control4 HC controller to the Sony STR receiver is also only available in the receiver s main zone. (6) Before you activate the Sony STR- DA2800ES or DA5800ES receiver with full Control4 Automation, ensure that you ve met all the requirements listed in the Control4 System Requirements section of this document and in the Sony installation and instruction documents. Prerequisites 1 You will be using the Sony remote to activate the receiver with full Control4 Automation and the Control4 On-Screen Navigator. TIPS: (1) If left and right arrow icons appear on the TV screen, use those arrow keys to navigate through the Sony Easy Setup Wizard. Press the Select button if no arrow displays on the screen. (2) After setup and when you re using the Control4 On-Screen Navigator, you can use the Control4 System Remote Control (e.g., SR- 250) or the Sony remote to navigate around the Control4 system. 2 If this is a new Control4 system, ensure that a my.control4.com account has been set up for the customer. 3 Ensure that a Control4 Activation License for the receiver has been added to the my.control4.com account. When you purchase the receiver with full Control4 Automation from Control4, a license is added to the dealer s account. Simply apply that license to the customer s account. IMPORTANT! Before installing the Control4 Activation License or using the receiver, perform a Sony software update. To update go to the following UI page: Home > Settings > Network Update. The update may take up to 15 minutes--please be patient. 4 Primary Controller only: Go to my.control4.com and obtain the registration code for the receiver. Write down the 10-digit number; you ll need to add it to the Sony Registration screen later (see Activate Primary Controller below). 3

Select the Language/Accept the EULA 1 Power on the receiver. 2 Upon power-up, the Sony STR receiver is in the Sony environment, which displays a Sony interface on the TV (Easy Setup Wizard) to set up a Sony one-room home theater. 3 Use the Sony remote control to perform the following steps: a The Sony Language screen appears on the TV screen. If it doesn t appear after a few seconds, press the Home button on the Sony remote. Select the appropriate language for the locale, for example, English. b The Sony End User Agreement screen appears. Select Next and read through the agreement using the left- and right-arrow buttons on the Sony remote. Accept the agreement by selecting Accept & Next. c Once the Easy Setup wizard starts, immediately select Finish to skip the Easy Setup wizard. This will take you to the Sony Home screen where you can manually configure settings. NOTES: (1) Primary Controller only: The controller only updates devices to its own version, for example OS 2.2.4. (2) Firmware updates for the receiver originate from Sony s network update server, only available through the Sony UI, so update the receiver s software prior to activating full Control4 Automation. d In the Sony UI, select Sony Settings > Settings, and then select Network Update. e Select Yes. NOTES: (1) To perform the network update, make sure the CAT5 Ethernet cable is connected to the Internet. The network update may take up to 15 minutes. If the user interface does not appear after 15 minutes, press the HOME button on the Sony remote control. (2) When the receiver is used as a Primary or Secondary Controller, network updates are managed using Composer Pro (receiver Properties page; not Update Manager). See the Composer Pro User Guide for details. IMPORTANT! For the system to properly function within a Control4 project, set Network Standby to On. To toggle this setting, go to the following UI page: Home > Settings > Network Settings > Network Standby. 4 Go to Activate the Primary Controller or Activate the Secondary Controller, depending on the controller type you want to activate. Activate the Primary Controller The Control4 On-Screen Navigator does not display until you register the controller to a my.control4.com account that has a valid Control4 Activation License. To register the receiver: 1 Use Home Control Settings to set up the Control4 system registration and other settings outlined in the table below. Setting Used for Control4 Automation? Network Settings Yes, but the default DHCP setting is recommended. Network Standby Yes, set to On. Input Settings No (use for Sony only). Home Control Yes. Use to register the Settings controller. Lighting Settings No (use for out-of-the-box automation only). Speaker Settings Yes, if desired (recommended for best audio performance). 2 Select Start in Easy Setup. Bypass Easy Setup for now by selecting Finish. 3 Go to Home > Settings > Home Control Settings and select Registration. 4 On the Registration page, select OK. a On the second Registration page you ll need to enter the customer s 10-digit registration code (see Prerequisites ) copied from the customer s my.control4.com account that includes a Control4 Activation License. NOTE: When registering, do not enter the 16-digit Control4 Activation License code. 4

b Enter the code in the Enter Code box by pressing the Select button on the Sony remote (located in the middle of the directional arrows). A grid appears with numbers and letters. c Use the directional-arrow buttons to enter the code, and then press the Select button. TIP: You can use the numeric buttons on the remote to enter the code. If you do this, press the Shift button on the remote first, and then enter the code; otherwise, you ll be selecting a device (e.g., Blu-ray player). d Select Activate. It may take a few minutes while the receiver checks in with the web service to get the proper credentials. Once the receiver confirms the Control4 Activation License credentials exist, the receiver reboots (which may take up to 15 minutes). NOTE: Please be patient while the receiver reboots. If after 15 minutes you don t see the Control4 On-Screen Navigator appear on the TV, press Home on the Sony remote. 5 After the receiver reboots, the Control4 system loads the default project. The next screen you ll see is the Control4 On-Screen Navigator. Control4 Automation has now been fully activated, and you can use the Control4 On-Screen Navigator and a Control4 remote (purchased separately) to control the system. 6 Add more devices and further configure and automate the system using Composer Pro. NOTE: A default project and drivers are included for the Primary Controller configuration. The default project can be replaced with another project using Composer Pro, but the Sony receiver and controller drivers must not be deleted. Activate the Secondary Controller The Control4 On-Screen Navigator does not display on the TV until you activate the receiver with full Control4 Automation and add it as a Secondary Controller into a project that already has a Control4 controller configured as a Primary Controller and registered to a my.control4.com account. NOTE: Director does not run on the receiver when it is configured as a Secondary Controller. 1 Add the Sony STR receiver to the LAN as instructed in the prerequisites section of this document. 2 Start Composer Pro and connect to the Director running on the Control4 Primary Controller. The project for the Primary Controller will open and be ready to modify. 3 In the System Design view, add the Sony STR- DA2800ES or STR-DA5800ES driver from the Discovered Devices tab. 4 Two (2) driver components will be automatically added to the project: a receiver driver and a controller driver. Identify the receiver driver first and then the controller driver as follows: a In the Connections view, click the Network tab. b Select the device, and then click Identify. Follow the instructions on the graphic image that displays in Composer Pro, or see the next step. c To identify the receiver to the project, press and hold the TONE button on the front of the receiver. d While holding the TONE button, press in sequence the following buttons: 2CH/A. DIRECT -> A.F.D. -> MOVIE/HD-D.C.S. (complete the sequence within three (3) seconds). The C4 IDENTIFY message appears in the receiver s window. If C4 IDENTIFY doesn t appear, repeat the sequence until it appears. e To identify the controller driver, use the same button sequence as described in Step 4c and d. f The receiver will reboot which may take up to 15 minutes (please be patient). If after 15 minutes you don t see the Control4 On- Screen Navigator, press the Home button. 5 After the receiver reboots, the next screen you will see is the Control4 On-Screen Navigator. You have now activated full Control4 Automation and configured the receiver as a Secondary Controller in the project. You can now use the Control4 On- Screen Navigator and Control4 remote to control the system. 5

See the Control4 Composer Pro User Guide for more information about how to use the Control4 system. Configure ZigBee The ZigBee radio for the Sony STR receiver is included in a USB Adapter (UWA-C4Z, also known as a ZigBee dongle ). If the receiver is used as the ZigBee Access Point (ZAP), ZigBee Coordinator, or to run ZigBee Server, you must install the ZigBee dongle. If ZigBee is provided via another controller, installing the ZigBee dongle is not necessary. NOTE: This adapter is not a WiFi adapter or antenna. If the user s cabinet or rack does not include enough room for the USB ZigBee Wireless Adapter, you may want to use a USB extension cable to relocate the ZigBee dongle to a more convenient location. To install the USB ZigBee dongle: 1 Make sure the receiver is turned off and unplugged from power before installing the ZigBee dongle. 2 Insert the ZigBee dongle into the USB port on the back of the receiver, plug in the receiver, press the power button, and then wait five (5) minutes. At this point, ZigBee devices can be identified. 3 To identify ZigBee devices into the project using Composer Pro, a ZigBee mesh must exist in your project (see the Control4 Knowledgebase to learn how to create a mesh). After you ve created the mesh, you can identify and Control ZigBee devices in the Control4 system. Configure Receiver Only NOTE: If your customer intends to use the Sony STR receiver (ZSO-STRDA2800ES or ZSO-STRDA5800ES) as a receiver only in a Control4 system, refer to the Sony documentation on the Sony website and the Composer Pro User Guide at www.control4. com. You will need to add the Sony STR- DA5800ES or STR-DA2800ES Certified driver from the online driver database and identify the device in Composer Pro. Troubleshooting Factory Resets or Restores To perform a factory reset: 1 On the front of the receiver, press the Power button to turn the receiver off. 2 While holding down the TONE and the 2CH/A Direct buttons on the front of the receiver, turn the receiver back on by pressing the Power button again. The receiver reset begins when the Memory Clearing message displays in the DA5800ES s front window. The DA2800ES displays a Clearing message in the front window. 3 When the message displays, release the buttons. The reset process may take up to 20 minutes before the receiver display returns to normal (please be patient). Reboots CAUTION! (1) All project information is erased during a factory reset. Re-register and identify the receiver again after the reset. (2) If the factory reset does not work, contact Control4 Technical Support for additional information. Powering off the Sony STR receiver using the Power button on the front of the receiver will not reboot the Control4 automation functions; unplug the receiver to completely reboot the system.
